“I know nothing.” ~ Nancy Botwin, Weeds
Years ago Zen-Den and I went to a garden show that was held in a city park. I’ve always wanted to go back to that park and see what else was there beyond what we saw during the show.
I was convinced that the entire park was a nice, manicured city park which would be a lovely place to go for a stroll on a gorgeous fall afternoon before we headed to the grocery to do some shopping. So on this past Sunday afternoon Z-D and I made our way back to that city park where we quickly figured out that I was wrong. There was a lot more to this park than I realized.

Despite appearing on the surface to be civilized, it turned out that many parts of this city park were more rugged than paved. In fact, in some places it was almost creepy with a dirt path through overgrown vines + shrubs + HUGE trees blocking out all the daylight.

Just about the time that Z-D and I were beginning to wonder what we’d gotten ourselves into with this walk, we came back around a trail loop and found ourselves walking through this stretch of well-maintained park. Looking at the colorful leaves was mesmerizing, and made the effort to get there all the more worth it.

When we got back to our car we realized that we’d wandered, trudged & walked for over one hour and had seen HALF of this city park. Apparently this park is quite large.
Our Sunday afternoon in the park might not have been the adventure that I thought we were going to have, but it was fun nonetheless. Turns out that sometimes [many times?] not knowing where I’m going, works in my favor.
Almosts sounds like Hansel and Gretel. Nice they have left some of the park wild/semi-wild…everybody needs to experience little of that. Looks like some great stories and writing details waiting to be invited to play in there

philosophermouse, I hadn’t thought of H & G but there certainly were elements of that story in this city park. And you’re right, the semi-wild was pretty cool.

Not knowing where you’re going leads to much better adventures than planning out a path. It’s been a while since I’ve just set out in a random direction and stopped whenever something looked interesting – I should do it more often. Lovely photos! Autumn looks like it’s beautiful there.

Zazzy, this was a very random walk. We didn’t bother with a map because I was sure that this was a manicured, formal city park. It was only after we were way back in the woods that we realized how wrong I was about that no map idea.

Tim and I have been on many walks like this in the many places we’ve lived. So glad you and Den could enjoy the day and the many colors of fall. This has to be the most beautiful time of year with the bright blue sky contrasting against the multi colors of the leaves.

Beth, there are so many city & county & state parks around here that I’m not sure we’ll ever hit them all. And you’re so right about the blue sky being the PERFECT backdrop for the leaves. It was way cool.

I am partial to unmanicured and unruly trails myself……..far more interesting! Looks like a nice outing and you can’t beat a beautiful autumn day for that.

winsomebella, I like unruly trails, but did not think that we’d be on one in the middle of the city– with the wrong footwear on our feet! Still, the beauty of the woods made up for the pain– a little bit.

Love your autumn pictures; one of my favourite times of the year. We’re going to an arboretum shortly, and this just makes me look forward to that even more.

Polly, I haven’t been to an arboretum in years! We used to live somewhere that had one nearby, so we went almost once a month. Enjoy your adventure, okay? I’ll be thinking of you.

I love taking walks in the fall because of all the leaves! Random meanderings are great unless you get lost. Did I mention I have a terrible sense of direction?

Margaret, if your sense of direction is terrible, then this park is not for you! Talk about a meandering mess of a place. Interesting, but totally random.
