Red Wine Served In The Wrong Glass

After a rainy Monday our weather this week has turned sunny and unseasonably cool– cold even.  I’m rather torn about this.  While my spirit likes sunny days, my body prefers gray days.  I always have more energy on gray days than on sunny ones.

I know, it’s backwards from how most people operate.  But that’s how I roll, so I’ve been in low gear all week.

Unique.

I attribute this weirdness to my childhood.  For me, grays days were in the fall + winter + spring when I was in school and involved in all sorts of extracurricular & church activities.  If it was gray outside, I was busy.

But sunny days were summer days when I was free to do nothing.  I learned to relax during the summer when the sun was out.

Mellow.

Earlier this year I bought some cut crystal glasses.  I thought the small size was about right for one healthy serving of red wine.  Plus serving red wine like this makes it easy to hold & pretty to look through.

Unexpected.

I told a friend that I was drinking wine from the wrong glass.  She was not enthused.  She explained to me all the different types of wine glasses that she has, and how she keeps track of them in her home.  She reminded me that the shapes of the wine glasses were for a definite purpose– to enhance the wine.

She shook her head from side-to-side about my lapse in proper wine glass procurement & management.

Concerned.

It’s not as if I go out of my way to do things in an unusual fashion.  I just do my thing– and somehow it often seems to be the odd thing to do.

It’s not a bad way to live your life.  But it does, from time-to-time, give me pause as I wonder how it is that I naturally end up doing things differently from everyone else.

  1. I very much like the idea of doing things differently and I think it’s always worthwhile to look at things in a different way. In a conventional glass, your wine wouldn’t look as pretty or catch the light so well. Similarly, seeing the benefits in grey weather opens up possibilities for a positive day. Someone once told me it would be fun, if you wake up remembering a dream, to think about what would have happened or what it would have felt like to do something different or have taken another option in the dream. This came about when I was relating a dream about trying not to fall off a ladder and she suggested I look at it differently and think about what it might have been like to let go and fall off. Opens up new ways of thinking (apparently) and I’m all for that! Great picture of the wine. Sorry I’ve rambled a bit, my comment is almost as long as your post! Another thing which is not meant to be.

    • Polly, I think that you’re right that “it’s always worthwhile to look at things in a different way.” I seem to do that naturally without any prompting, which, I suppose, is how I end up serving red wine in the wrong glass.

      I’m fascinated with the idea of rearranging my dreams just to see what could of [should of?] happened in them. That is way cool. Talk about personal insight.

      And NEVER worry about rambling here in my comments section. That is what I adore– thoughts, conversations & laughs. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I remember watching a Fred Astaire movie called “The Pleasure of His Company” on TV one day with Tab Hunter playing a cattle rancher who lived in Napa Valley, CA. As you know Napa Valley is wine county and in one scene some of the characters were being wine connoisseurs pompous about the wine they were drinking. Tab Hunter’s character exploded saying, “Where I come from we don’t say prayers over wine, we drink it!”

    That line had been my mantra about wine from the moment I heard it. I love good wine and appreciate drinking it out of the “correct” wine glass but that’s doesn’t mean I won’t drink it out of a clean jelly glass if that was the only glass available. Now I would love to drink wine out of a cut crystal glass as there is a nice heft to cut crystal when you pick it up. It just feels good in your hand. Of course a slug of good scotch or bourbon wouldn’t be bad in a small cut crystal glass either.

    • la p, that’s a great line. I’ll have to remember it for just the right moment.

      The glasses are supposed to be for scotch or bourbon, so you’re on the money there. I just bought the glasses because I thought that red wine would look/taste good in them. Never thought that I’d get a “lecture” about my nonconventional approach to wine drinking!

  3. i have a pair of old cut glass tumblers – one yellow, one blue. i like drinking wine out of them, but while i’ll put white in either, i’ll only put red in the blue one. go figure.

  4. I love your picture of the wine in the cut glass. All the colors that come from it are wonderful! And the things that you do and say are what make you the likeable person that you are 🙂 I’m alway curious to see what you will write every day just because you ARE so unique!

    • Beth, thank you. I loved that photo, too. And like you, I’m rather curious to see what I’ll write about next. My mind goes in many directions– never just in one. My topics are as much of a surprise to me as anyone else!

  5. I love your unconventional ways. My wine glasses are packed away so on the rare occasions that I serve wine, it goes in water glasses. Picardi glasses so, while not as pretty as your cut crystal, are at least a little unqiue.

    • Ah ha! Another woman who can drink her wine in the wrong glass. Dear Lord, it’s almost as if this is the done thing!

      We have some Picardi style glasses, too. Ours are green glass which supposedly makes them the Spanish version of the classic. Or Libbey was just pulling my leg with their advertising!

  6. If you like gray days, you need to move to Washington!! Although we had a beautiful summer and fall, today was gray and misty all day long. I like all kinds of weather; I’m open to anything. I hate high humidity though. I think you should drink wine out of whatever you want to. It looks very nice in that glass!
