Another wet morning here. This Spring has been unusually rainy and not as warm as I’d like it to be. In fact, I have yet to wear capris, let alone shorts. Sandals, however, I have worn. They look kind of snazzy with jeans, so there’s that.

As you can imagine the rainy days have led to green, lush grass. Our yard looks great. The neighbors’ yards look great. The grass-filled concrete divider islands in the grocery parking look great. The side of the interstate looks great.
The whole world looks great… as long as you like this particular shade of green. From my point of view this green is getting a little too close to Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year, Emerald Green. I don’t like Emerald Green, so you can see how, for me, this Spring is getting a little cloying.

To set my heart right I’ve taken to checking our pots of pansies more often than need be. The leaves are green, of course– but overall the pansies are a hodgepodge of purple and maroon and orange and blue. These colors make me happier/mellower/calmer than all that in-your-face green. I always feel more comfortable with variety than with sameness; and I guess, now that I think about it, that principle holds true for me in nature– as well as in decorating and people.

Well, that’s all I’ve got from here. Waiting for the sun to shine so that I can get outside to work in the garden. Wondering about where I should go to buy some new shorts. Thinking that it’s a very good thing that today is Friday, because I. am. tired.

THE SPECTACLED BEAN 
We’ve had more rain here than usual, too. But this week has been absolutely gorgeous. I’m sitting on our back porch now in shorts and sandals. Planted a bunch of flowers yesterday and have been doing lots of cleanup in the yard—-pulling little saplings, weeds and picking up sticks. We also have this awful stuff that I think is called smilax(?) It’s a spiky vining thing that grows upwards and takes over everything if you let it–YUCK! Love the pictures of your pansies:) Ours are just about at the end because of the heat. Here’s to a beautiful weekend for you!

The old-fashioned name for pansies is “heart’s ease”. No wonder you feel better looking at them.

I have all my summer clothes out and now debating what stays in the house or goes in the camper. It’s a tough decision. I know!
I also stepped outside and curled my toes in the green grass this morning and it felt delightful!

belle, I am looking forward to that toe curling moment, but so far it has been cloudy and wet around here. Next week is supposed to be colder than this one, so I may have to wait a few weeks longer before I can go with summer clothes. I envy you!

Zen-Den, that’s a good idea. If there were more colorful perennial flowers growing outside, then all this green-ness wouldn’t be so overwhelming. But right now– we be green.

A big storm right now – and more on the way. (back mosquitoes – back!), but keeps the sprinklers quiet and the ants on the run.
Finally put our pansies out of their spindly misery last weekend – their season over now. Put a few flowers in the yard, but not many as it looks to be a dry summer – only survivors welcomed at this time.

philosophermouse, your weather is about a month ahead of ours, so our pansies are safe for the moment. Occasionally we can keep them growing until the 4th– so maybe this will be one of those years. Hope that your weekend is fun, too. We all deserve a great one.

I totally agree on the green! Of course every time it seems I step outside to buy more plants to add some color to my garden it rains. And then I make plans to weed and tidy up and it rains. And then I want to wear my open-toed heels and it rains. And then, and then. Yup, sick of the rain (and the chill)! 😦 Pansies are my favorite though and I also love Johnny Jump-ups (that look to me like miniature Pansies). Here’s hoping we finally see some sun and warmer weather here in Ohio! 🙂

Kristen, this has been a difficult Spring, hasn’t it? I can’t seem to accomplish anything because everything that I want to do involves the outside. I feel like getting a few pansies in a pot has been my biggest achievement!
[Do you buy Johnny Jump-Ups at the garden center like pansies? Or do you grow them from seed? The only thing that I know about them is that they are an old-fashioned flower.]

My weeds are very green. And the mint survived and may take over the herb bed, which is okay. It’s kind of pretty. I remember pansies as lasting all summer. Perhaps we’re just enough south to make that possible.

Capris and shorts galore around here (strangely enough), but also lots of watering! It sounds like you have our rain and our emerald green, which we like because we’re used to it. 😉

I wish we could trade houses for a week. You come here and see my brown dry hills, enjoy the sunshiney weather, go for a swim in the local pool, enjoy our great restaurants. Go see the ocean. I’ll come there and enjoy that gorgeous green, the drizzle that I miss so much, all of that. Humidity I’m not fond of, but green, I adore. I love the Bay Area, so a week in Ohio is probably all I want, but gosh, I’d love to see some green.

J, I’d love to see the ocean. That’s something special to me. I realize that complaining about too much green is rather silly– but honestly, it has begun to wear on my very last nerve! Now if this was Ireland & I could have a cuppa with a wee dram of whiskey in it while sitting in me local pub, then things would be different!
