  1. I do not remember Laverne’s mix, and I cannot remember Penny Marchall ever looking that young. As for 7-Up and milk – add a healthy dose of bourbon and I would at least think about it.

    • Z-D, really, you don’t remember Laverne’s signature drink?!!! I don’t think that I’ll ever forget it. YUCK.

As for adding bourbon to this “wholesome” beverage, NO WAY– unless I get to take the milk out of the mixture. Then I’d have a drink that, depending on the quality of the bourbon, was worth drinking.

    • Beth, no one should try this. It was icky to the hundredth degree. But I had to find out for myself because– well, it was something to do. And when I get bored [thank you snowpocalypse], I do odd things.

  2. I didn’t remember Laverne’s milk and pepsi until you mentioned it. Ew. I think I will skip the 7-up and milk but thank you for being brave and trying it. I don’t have to sit here and wonder.

    • Zazzy, I’m so happy that I could answer a question (that you didn’t even know that you had) regarding the deliciousness of this beverage. What is life about if not to help other people as often as one can?

And, I might add, save them from tasting this peculiar combo. Not as bad a medicine, but just kinda weird, unnatural, strange…

  3. I also thought of Laverne’s milk & Pepsi when I read this ad! That must mean that I am “of a certain age.” Hmmm…

I find myself wondering when this ad was from. I also find myself wondering about the claim “Mothers know that this is a wholesome combination.”

    Also, blech.

    • alejna, this ad stopped me in my tracks. All I could do is re-read over & over hoping that I was missing something. But I wasn’t. It’s exactly what it looks like: a recipe for a blended food drink.

Don’t know what era it’s from. Maybe the 50s?

  4. robin, well that’s the thing of it. The longer I looked at the ad the more inclined I was to try it. The ingredients were at hand, so I thought: why not?

Give it a go. It wasn’t horrible, but I’d prefer to not taste it again if I can avoid it.

    • timethief, now that you mention it, we had 7-Up floats, too. Those I liked. Still, you’d think that I’d like the 7-Up + milk beverage, but I didn’t. Of course, I was using skim milk in it, so maybe that’s the reason– too healthy! Give me ice cream with my soda.

  5. Well, it’s just like vanilla ice cream in 7-up float…but melted and odd….like you had one then got interrupted to play hide and seek and then came back and -decided to feed it to the dog…who got hiccups…(Oh, see Time Thief also had those, too)

  6. I don’t like milk, so I would hate this. However, I do think 7-up adds a lot to various juices. I’m a fan of Orangina which is carbonated orange juice and we used to have what we called a Mormon cocktail at staff meetings. 🙂 (cranberry juice and 7-up)

    • Margaret, your drinks sound wonderful to me. Love the Mormon cocktail. Carbonation + fruit juices make sense to me– and would be in my estimation a “wholesome” combo for mom to serve. Better than this blended food drink.

  7. I tried the milk and pepsi thing once, of course, when the show was on. It wasn’t bad, mostly tasted like a pepsi float. But not as good. I only tried it once, because it wasn’t good enough to have more than once. Something about the 7-up version seems worse to me, though.

    • J, you are a brave woman to try that milk & Pepsi thing. I like floats, but that’s a far cry from one.

As for the milk & 7-Up drink, the weirdness I think was in citrus tasting milky. Somehow that didn’t make any sense to me. But for the good of all blogdom, I tried this drink so that I could save everyone else from needing to do so! 😉
