Words Are The Best, Aren’t They?

This morning is the first one since we changed our clocks that I’ve gotten up at 6:00 a.m. without a struggle.  Feeling more springy, I am, I am.  That would be the good news.

On the other hand, even though I’m sitting here typing my heart out at my usual writing time, my mind is a complete blank when it comes to tales to tell.  That would be the bad news.

So I thought that instead of a story I’d share with you three items that I discovered while surfing the ‘net.  We’re all wordy people here, so I’m sure that you’ll get a kick out of the following fast and fun links.

1.  HERE is a “List Challenge” which is fast, fun and has cool sounds when you click on the books.

2.  HERE is the “Are You a True Fashionista?” quiz which is fast, fun and more difficult than you might imagine.

“Test your style smarts by seeing how many fashion terms you know.”

3.  HERE is “Grammar Madness” on Twitter which looks like it will be fast, fun and worth watching throughout the rest of March.

This is the “battle to determine the most MADDENING writing error.”

  2. I read 37 of the books–saw a couple of movies of books I haven’t read.

    I got 8 out of 10 on the fashionista test'”not too shabby chic”.

    I don’t tweet, so couldn’t do the grammar thing. But sure wanted to. I sometimes remember the rules, but not always.

    • Beth, some of those books I’d never heard of before. And some of them were read to me when I was a child, so I included them in my total. Reading is reading.

      I know what you mean about the grammar rules. I studied them years ago, but still make mistakes. I figure at this point my writing mistakes are more fun + quirky, than forbidden + wrong.

    • nance, the only place I’ve been able to find that bracket is on Twitter. The website that created it is: Grammarly.com, which describes itself as “the world’s best grammar checker.” Maybe it’s on that website and I missed it?

  4. I read 45 books on the list but I’m not counting the ones I stared but did not finish. Love Gramamrly and fashionista-wise, I’m Not-Too-Shabby Chic.
    (Don’t let fashionista know that I guessed at most of the answers.)

    • la p, 45 is a good number of those books to have read. Some of the ones that I haven’t read sound interesting to me, but I doubt that I’ll ever read them all. And that’s okay by me.

      Also, your fashionista secret is safe with me because you’d never hear me saying: “la peregrina guessed. She’s no true fashionista.” Nope, that’s not what I’d say to the world at all! 😉

  5. I *love* the Grammar Madness. My SIL constantly ends every sentence with a question mark on FB and in texts. Drives me CRA-ZY. I’m not perfect, but at least I know the difference between to and too.

    • Lisset, I’m anxious to see who wins on Grammar Madness. There can only be one “most maddening writing error.” I’m not perfect with my grammar either, but I do try. Sounds like your SIL doesn’t even do that.

  6. I only got 30 in the books. I blame my high school for avoiding the classics. Several of those are on my list to read someday. Tempting to count movies as having read the books, too.

    I also got a 9 on the fashionista quiz. I am not a fashionista but I do have a good vocabulary and a mother who used to sew for me.

    I did not see there/they’re/their on the Grammarly list. I’d vote for that or your/you’re confusion to win. I’m pretty relaxed with some grammar issues (like ending a sentence with a preposition, sometimes it just sounds better) but those two drive me nuts.

    • Zazzy, my high school was all about the classics and then I majored in English LIt in college, so some of those books I read decades ago!

      Ditto about the fashionista quiz.

      Maybe next year’s Grammar Madness will have your pet peeves on it!

  9. And between 30-40 on the books. (although the fact that Dan Brown is on it nullifies it in my mind) And if you’ve read Shakespeare but also Hamlet on its own, is that 2??

    • Margaret, I know, I wondered about the Dan Brown book, too. I never read it, so I didn’t include it.

      I said “yes” to Hamlet [11th grade], but “no” to all of Shakespeare [even though I took a class on him in college and we talked about, but did not read, all of his writings].

  11. Great post, I love wordy things! I got 48 books and 9 on the fashion, which I am amazed at. Haven’t done the grammar yet but definitely will.
