This past Tuesday morning was unusually clear so that when I looked up into the sky around 7:30 a.m. EST I saw the waning gibbous moon. I was aware that I might see the moon in the morning after I read this, and I knew from a similar event last year that if I had my camera with me I might get a photo of it.
Above is the best photo that I took. Too cool for school, huh?
I like the moon more than the sun. For one thing I don’t have to apply any sunblock or don a hat before I go outside to see it. But the real reason that I like the moon is that the gradual changes associated with its rotation keep it fresh and fascinating.
Nothing stodgy about it. A bit eclectic, even.
Seeing this moon photo I remembered a quote by Paulo Coelho about the moon. It is in Veronika Decides To Die, a novel which I read years ago but have to admit that I don’t remember much about. All that stayed with me from the novel is this quote which, I feel, makes a perfect ending to this post.
“She didn’t quite know what the relationship was between lunatics and the moon, but it must be a strong one, if they used a word like that to describe the insane.”

There’s such detail in your photo! So cool. It’s really neat to see it during the day. I’ve seen the moon and stars many times through Tim’s telescopes he’s had through the years. But this is a great picture!

Beth, I thought it was cool, too. I don’t see the moon very often during the day so I was psyched when I did see it. I think that having a telescope would be fun, but until we do I’ll use my camera for a close-up.

That’s a really lovely photo of the moon. I love a daytime moon, but usually they’re kind of ghost-like. That one is just beautiful!

Thanks Zazzy. I was astounded that I managed to get such a detailed photo. I missed my chance last June, so when I saw that the same morning moon phenomenon was going to happen this week– I seized the camera, so to speak.

That photo of the moon belongs on a photography site. Holy cow!! I like the sun, but would never try to take photos of it. 🙂 The moon is magical and mysterious. Sometimes we only see a sliver of it, other times all. It lights up the night sky.

I like what you’re attempting to do on your blog. If I took more photos I suppose that might spur me on to do what you’re doing. But I’m just so wordy by nature that I don’t know if I could. Food for thought, though. Maybe for one month?

The sun and the moon are such a perfect yin and yang, and we can’t live without them both. The sun gives us warmth, the moon gives us our tides. I love them both, but I am more fond of the moon. I wonder if I lived somewhere that didn’t get so damned hot, if I would be fonder of the sun?
It’s amazing that you got that picture with a point and shoot camera. Every time I’ve ever tried to take a picture of the moon, it looks like a little white dot.

J, my photos of the moon usually are like yours– a little white dot. But on the morning that I took this photo the sun was shining is such a way as to allow me to actually see the moon and all of its detail. Once in a while I’m in the right place at the right time with my camera. 🙂
