Get Out The Windex, It’s Time To Vote

During the 18 years that we’ve lived in this area we’ve voted at six different locations:

  • the smoky VFW Hall;
  • the cavernous golf course/convention center;
  • the cheerful Methodist church;
  • the crowded elementary school;
  • the difficult to get into and out of community church;  and now
  • the Greek Orthodox church.

Of all the locations, this Greek Orthodox church is the best one because it’s slightly off of a busy street, has lots of parking and the actual voting area is a few steps inside the door.  The Greeks do voting well.

But the thing about this voting location, which has absolutely nothing to do with the voting itself but I’ll tell you about it anyhow, is that Z-D comes from a family with a Greek heritage.

And our well-mannered, kind Mr. Bean can do a wicked, dead-on impression of his Great Uncle, who disapproved of everything and everyone.  Great Uncle was not a happy person with a generous soul, unlike his nephew.

So as you can imagine, this impression, which Z-D trots out two times a year, gets me laughing.  Every time.

And always leads to one of us quoting a movie that is best known for its references to Windex, but also explains Zen-Den’s family so well. A movie in which I am the WASP to his Greekinicity. A movie called My Big Fat Greek Wedding which gives us the following wonderful lines.

Aunt Voula: What do you mean he don’t eat no meat?

[the entire room stops, in shock]

Aunt Voula: Oh, that’s okay. I make lamb.

  1. My station is a church too. It’s not bad unless it’s a presidential year. Then the line outside the door goes on forever. The best thing about retirement is that I can go during the day when no one is there.

    • kate, so far voting at this church has been easy, no matter what time of day I get there. Compared to all our previous locations, this one is a joy. Hope we stay there for a few more years.

  2. Definitely going to vote today! We go to the creative arts elementary school.
    I loved “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”!Two of my great aunts would have fit into that family fabulously.

    • philmouse, no kidding? Home baked cookies? Wow. That’s cool. We just get the privilege of voting, presuming we can figure out where we’re supposed to go to vote. 😉

  3. We vote at the fire station which is both difficult to get in and out of and also has almost no parking. Seems counterintuitive for an area comprised primarily of the elderly and retired.

    • Zazzy, I agree with you. The fire station does seem like a weird choice, considering. But some of our voting locations have been rather peculiar/inconvenient so I guess that happens from time-to-time.

  4. As a retired person, I go straight to the County Board of Elections (about 10 minutes away) and early vote. It’s a pleasant building staffed with genuinely friendly people, and I’m in and out in a flash.

    An aside: I’m not Greek, but we Croatians are fond of roast lamb, too. 😉

    • nance, your plan sounds perfect. Now that we vote at the Greek Orthodox church the whole process, even when crowded, moves along smoothly. And, of course, Z-D and I get to talk about Greek relatives and Greek food. So this voting thing is a win-win, of sorts.

  5. We are completely mail in in WA and I do miss the interaction and hands on feel of the voting places; I’m sure it was becoming increasingly difficult to find the volunteers to man/woman them though. 🙂 That was a great movie! My family isn’t Greek, but I’m sure some of my eccentric Italian relatives could give them a run for their money.

    • Margaret, I didn’t realize that your whole state voted that way. Our volunteers are some retired people + some younger people who work for companies that close on election days. Makes for a good mix.

      Yes I bet that your Italian relatives could star in their own movie. Wouldn’t that be fun!
