I Will Not Let One Tulip Get Me Down

I bought a bouquet of 20 tulips at Kroger because I like how graceful tulips look in a vase and because a bit of cheerful color in mid-winter is a good thing.  I put 17 of the tulips in a large vase and set it on our kitchen table.

Upbeat.

Three of the tulips wouldn’t fit into the large vase so I put them in a smaller crystal bud vase and set the bud vase, on a saucer, on top of the chest of drawers in our bedroom.  I liked how the 3 tulips looked reflected in the mirror on the wall above the chest of drawers.

Artsy.

HOWEVER, a few hours later when I walked back into the bedroom I noticed that 1 tulip had given up.  Cracked under the weight of blooming.

Sure it was still a bit of cheerful color, but it was not working with the other tulips to create a tiny uplifting bouquet.  And I had the distinct impression that the Universe was messing with me via these 3 tulips.

 But you know what?  I didn’t care, so I left the tiny bouquet just as it was as a reminder that we all do what we can to make each day special & unique.  In our own way.  Regardless of what other people may want us to do.

  1. Love tulips especially now. I love how they bend and turn with the direction of the sun through the window. Definitely artsy. BTW I love the look of your template. Very clean and easy to read. Every once in a while I think I should change things up. When I do everything goes wonky. You have inspired me.

    • Kate, I love tulips for the same reasons that you do. Even like ’em when one of them misbehaves.

      Thanks for the comment about the new template. I decided that I needed to change to a simpler one because more & more ppl are reading blogs on their phones, and the last one didn’t do that well.

      I know what you mean about wonky when you try to change the look of a blog. I did it by making a big pot of coffee, taking a deep breath, saying a short prayer– and then going for it. You can do it, too. I have no doubt.

  3. I love the blue plate with the yellow bird in the background of your big vase of beautiful, bright, happy tulips:)
    I laughed out loud at the tulip bending down. It reminded me so much of the difference in people. It’s great that you left it there to make it’s own statement.
    And I too, love your new template. The colors are so appealing.

    • Beth, funny that you’d notice the plate. I was thinking of using it as my avatar here, but decided to go with the abstract print fabric on the chair in our home office. It has so many more potential colors from which to choose when creating this template’s color scheme.

      Well said about what the bendy tulip means. I kind of liked it, truth be known.

      • You are so much more laid-back than I am. I could not stand that bent tulip. I’d have cut its stem, put it back, and tried it that way. If it didn’t look symmetrical or pleasant, I would have had to regretfully toss it.

    • Carrie, this bouquet caught my eye in Kroger and I had to have them. It was the cheerful color I think, so I can understand your love for them. They’re pretty regardless of how well behaved they may, or may not, be.

    • Zazzy, a bouquet of flowers, every so often, makes me happy. Especially when the weather gets gloomy or extreme. Try it, you’ll like it. Although if bendy tulips bother you, don’t get a bouquet of them. Try something else instead. 🙂

  8. End of the semester, so I identify with that droopy tulip. I am seeing primroses and containers of early spring flowers and getting a definite craving for them. However, I will be patient and wait for my zillions of tulips to come up in the front flower bed. (I went a BIT overboard planting them!)

    • Margaret, your weather is much farther along than ours. We won’t see tulips until April and primroses sometime thereafter. We don’t try to plant tulips anymore because the deer + squirrels eat the bulbs before the poor flowers have a chance to grow. Enjoy your tulips– and take a few photos for me!

  9. If it were my tulip, I’d trim the end off and see if it just wants water. If that didn’t work, I’d cut it very short and put it in a small vase or shot glass, and put it in the bathroom. I don’t think I could bear to have it looking straight down like that. Tulips are my very favorite flowers, but they do sometimes flop over.

    • Kourtney, exactly! When I saw it I started laughing out loud. I mean really, any old tulip can stand straight up, but it takes a special sort of tulip to bend over in such a dramatic, memorable way.

    • philmouse, I know. I like abstract art so maybe that’s why it made me smile when I saw it. The color was delightful no matter which way it went. Yes, yes, but no!
