Lunching With A Friend At A Restaurant With A Confusing Name

… you gotta wonder who names these places?

A FRIEND WHO I’VE KNOWN FOR DECADES called me and wanted to meet me for lunch at a place she’d recently discovered.  She thought the food and service were great– plus we needed an adventure, she said.

I asked what was the name of this fine establishment where we’d be lunching.  And that’s when the conversation took a turn for the worse.

It’s called Again With The Eggs Cafe, she said.

… Or maybe it’s called All About Eggs Cafe?

She couldn’t remember.

I ASKED WHERE THIS NEW DELIGHTFUL RESTAURANT, whatever its name might be, was located.  Come to find out it was about halfway between where we each live, so it made sense to go there.

It’s called Broken Eggs Again Cafe, she declared.

That’s it.  That’s the name of the place.

… Or maybe it’s called Something About Broken Eggs Cafe.

I can’t remember the name, she said.

[No kidding, thought I.]

However, despite not knowing the precise name of this restaurant, located in a new “lifestyle center,” she could tell me exactly how to get there.  And how to safely navigate the “lifestyle center” parking lot, designed by the makers of whack-a-mole.

AND THAT WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME, a woman who started driving pre-Garmin.  Who survives life in the big city sans smart phone.

Who’s been lost more times than found when it comes to going to lunch with friends.

So off I went to have lunch at this charming little restaurant, with the impossible-to-remember name, called: Another Broken Egg Cafe.

… you can understand her confusion, can’t ‘ya?

  1. That is definitely a difficult name to remember! I hope you enjoyed your lunch, though. And now you’ve found a new place! “And you’ve got to have friends.” That’s the best part.

    • Beth, it was a funny conversation on the phone. She was close to remembering the restaurant’s name, but not quite accurate because imho it’s a stupid name for a restaurant! However, we found it and the food + service were good. Plus it made for a good story, so there’s always that.

  2. The dull people in my world would shorten it to the “ABEC.” But we try not to talk about those people.

    • Zen-Den, an acronym?!! Oh that’s worse than the confusing name of the place. I hadn’t thought of that. I’m suddenly reconsidering my objection to the wordy, goofy name. I am, as you know, PRO WORDS.

    • Polly, it was a good restaurant, with the nicest wait staff, but figuring out where we were going was… problematic. I like clever and all, but the name of this place is easy to forget so I don’t know if it’ll last or not.

  3. I will remember, when I call you for a lunch date, to know the actual name of the restaurant. Because I’m going to be no help telling you how to get there unless you can navigate by directions like “it’s near where K-Mart used to be.” Seriously, I struggle giving directions to my own house.

    • Zazzy, you got me laughing here. Thankfully my friend is an expert at giving directions so I felt comfortable going to an unnamed restaurant in a new part of town without so much as a map. But if I meet you… well, it’s good that you know your strengths and weaknesses. 😉

  4. Sounds like something I might do. It’s like books I read. I can tell you the plot, the characters names but can’t remember the title. The worst part of that is that I may buy it again if I don’t carefully read the book cover!

    • Kate, I hear you there about the book titles and covers. That’s an easy mistake to make. Especially with all the sequels and prequels and movie titles that seem to be part of the book world now. ‘Tis confusing.

    • Margaret, I liked the restaurant and would go back if I was anywhere near it, but that name is goofy. I hope the place makes a go of it, but if it doesn’t I’m going to assign blame to its name.

  5. “parking lot, designed by the makers of whack-a-mole.” It’s all making sense now.
There’s a restaurant not far from here called “The Egg and I” which has a lovely patio, but I keep thinking Humpty Dumpty…and my mother saying “If you get a chance to go out to eat, for goodness sakes, order something you can’t cook at home.” (We ate out very little…as most of it you can cook at home. It was a plot, I tell you!)

    • philmouse, if I hadn’t known this woman forever I wouldn’t have gone somewhere without a map. But I knew that she’d know exactly how to get there, parking lot included [which is always a big issue around here], even if the name of the restaurant escaped her.

I like your mother’s logic about eating out. This restaurant had mostly items you could make at home, but better!

  6. Mmm. Eggs are good. Was the place busy? Breakfast may be my favorite meal, and I like it for lunch or dinner, too.

    • J, the place was busy, but not frantic. The food was good, with a NOLA-twist to it. I hope that the restaurant survives, but with a name that confuses my friend, a world-traveling CPA who is all about details, I dunno.
