Breakfast In The Afternoon On The Way To Being Charitable

While I’ve no doubt my readers know what a McDonald’s Egg McMuffin looks like, I present this image for future Historians who 200 years hence will need a visual to understand this post. Historians, you may thank me in the footnotes of your doctoral theses.

I had my first afternoon Egg McMuffin last week.

It was late Thursday afternoon, and Z-D & I were on our way to Habitat for Humanity to drop off our old, but still usable, outdoor light fixtures that have been in my way in the garage for months.

[We replaced them last autumn with new black ones that use LED bulbs, with clear beveled glass– and the value of our home doubled. Really. The improvement is amazing.]

I was feeling peckish as we drove along, and in a moment of inspiration I directed Zen-Den to stop at the next McDonald’s so that I could feast on the one item I like at McDonald’s.

[Also I wanted a cup of black coffee.  They have good coffee, which I needed to wash down my formerly unavailable after 10:30 a.m. sandwich delight.]

Hello again future Historians. This logo, which we saw all over the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, was easy to recognize as we followed the signs on the streets through a working part of town. Once at the store a friendly employee helped us unload our donations to the store.  

So he did.

And I got an Egg McMuffin, which might have been the best one I’ve ever eaten.  A bit of an exaggeration, but it was good.

Especially at the “wrong” time of day.

Eaten in rush hour traffic while someone else chauffeured me around the city on our way to doing good.

Talk about your win-win situation.  😉

  1. There are only two things there I like — sausage mcmuffins and French fries. I can’t remember the last time I had either but an afternoon breakfast is tempting. As for HFH, they take stuff that a lot of people don’t think of. They took my neighbor’s kitchen cabinets when she redid her kitchen. They can repaint them and use them somewhere. I think locally they also have a resale shop for items. You have reminded me that I have some outdoor lights to take over.

    • Kate, I’ve never had a Sausage McMuffin, tending to prefer the original one. However, one day I might try one, in your honor.

      When we had our kitchen remodeled Habitat for Humanity sent a truck out, and they took all our cabinets, counters, appliances. I’d never been to the actual store until last week. Not conveniently located, but worth going to if for no other reason than to see what other house stuff Habitat takes. In a word: everything.

  2. Next time you’ll have to try an egg white delight—very yummy! I also like their pancakes and sausage breakfast. I like that I don’t have to make a mess in our kitchen and their prices are cheap! Their stock has risen because of this new breakfast all day idea (FYI).

    • Beth, I yelled “finally” as I ate my first afternoon Egg McMuffin! It’s about time McDonald’s made this change and had an all day breakfast menu. Will try egg white delight next time I’m there. Thanks for the suggestion.

  3. I saw yesterday that the decision to sell the Egg McMuffin all day might have been the reason their earnings went up last quarter. For once, they listened to their customers…

    • John, “for once” is the truth of it. I rarely find myself near a McDonald’s but now with this menu addition I may eat there more frequently. In theory, at least.

  4. Before we moved to Floridz, BFF managed a Re*Store for Habitat ~ they would collect and sell everything from cabinets, to light fixtures, to ceiling fans, to plumbing fixtures.

    And the money went to home builds for people who needed assistance in becoming home owners. A win-win!

    • nrhatch, before last week I didn’t know how many different items Habitat for Humanity would take. Years ago when we remodeled, pretty much all of our kitchen went to Habitat for Humanity, so I knew about that. However, now that we’ve seen the ReStore I realize we have lots more odds and ends to donate. Yay!

    Bah. McDonalds is not my breakfast place. The muffins are always too raw. I like my muffins toasty.

    I am, of course, happy for the rest of you. Enjoy your cold, raw muffins. I will be driving around hoping to find one of the places that still sells sausage biscuits. Are any of them doing breakfast all day? Only one franchise in New Jersey? No fair!

    • Zazzy, hmmm? I’ve not experienced this raw muffin phenomenon, but have no doubt that it could happen. I don’t know anything about sausage & biscuit sandwiches anywhere, because they’re too rich in fat for me, so I don’t like them. I’m really no help to you at all, am I? 😉

    • joey, what’s not to love when you can sit back, munch & watch the world go by? I’d make a good train rider I think. Also, the ReStore was a surprise. Happy we found it, happy to donate some more now that we know where it is.

    • Allie P, that’s an excellent point. And last Thursday we were on a productive roll. Will have to try an afternoon Egg McMuffin again on an off day– and see it takes as good. Just to be sure. 😉

I quit going to McDonalds several years ago, so I haven’t got to see this new breakfast program in action… but since I don’t eat breakfast food anyway, I would be perturbed that they (I assume, anyway) still won’t serve their regular food during breakfast hours. I like a place where I can get a good burger or chicken strip meal at 7 in the morning…

    • evilsquirrel13, you make a good point. I don’t know if the regular food is available around the clock now, or not. I’m in a McDonald’s about 3 times per year, maybe. And when I am it’s for breakfast. I haven’t had any of their other stuff in years, a decade even.

  11. Nothing is as nice as eating while someone else drives – real luxury.
    ReStore finally opened near us. Now we don’t have to haul stuff long distances. It’s really a great idea.
    Great idea for all day breakfast, but not one on the main route for us. There is a local kolache shop right on the way to anywhere, though.

    • philmouse, I agree. It seemed almost decadent to be sitting there eating my Egg McMuffin while being driven about. The ReStore was a revelation. Glad that we found it and will take more stuff there soon. I love the idea of it.

  12. I haven’t been to McD for many years, but if I went, I would definitely get an Egg McMuffin. I love eggs! Most restaurants, even fast food ones, can’t mess them up too much. 😉

  13. A ReStore just opened up not too terribly far from me. I’m not familiar with the whole concept. Is it primarily building materials, home decor…what, exactly? I’m finally redoing the home office. Maybe I should check it out.

    • nance, I thought that it was going to be only building supplies and cabinets, but this one had furniture + light fixtures + books in it. Kind of like a nicer version of Goodwill’s furniture department. Completely fascinating to an amateur interior designer like me.
