Let The Naming Of Our New Dishwasher Commence

A few months ago I shared the story of how it came to be that our dishwasher, Monique, no longer worked. I’m still sad about the turn of events.

At that time I asked you for suggestions for a name for our new dishwasher when we got one. You outdid yourselves with ideas, gentle readers.

YOU ARE CLEVER, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT.  

On Wednesday our new dishwasher arrived and was installed, meaning that the time has come for us to settle on a name for our stainless steel Bosch baby. Again I turn to you for help.

    • itsathought2, I don’t name all of our machines, just a few of the ones I interact with on a daily basis. Seems to me that we spend more time together than I do with most people, so I want the machines to feel appreciated. 😉

  8. Hi, I just popped over from Phil’s superbowl party where I loiter in the kitchen making snacks and getting drunk. Hate football. I thought Benjamin had a nice ring to it for a Bosch. Benjamin the Bosch, new and so posh. 🙂

    • scottishmomus, happy to meet you. Lovely name choice. Sounds so sophisticated, as long as the other appliances don’t start calling him Benny– and making jokes about Benny and the Jet-Dry. 😉

  9. I picked Shirley as that is the name of one of my favorite movie characters (Shirley Valentine, if you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend it). But then I read the comments and “Steel McQueen,” as suggested by nrhatch is awesome. 🙂

  10. I think a one word shorter name will be easier to use. I voted for Madge, even though there are a few people who call me that. (only a select few) Madge makes me think of an old time diner waitress. 🙂

    • Margaret, I agree that Madge is an old-fashioned name that seems to embody food/cleanliness/a willingness to work. All good attributes of a dishwasher. Definitely in the running.

    My car is named Bonnie Blue. I have plants called Spike, Phil, Furl, Dotty, and Nita. I have a mixer called Ethel and a kettle called Evelyn — among other things ^_^

    • joey, you are a women after my own heart! Our mixer is named Bluesy the Mixing Floosy & my car is Olivia. I figure that being on a first name basis with the machines who keep me comfortable is a good idea. Thanks for voting.

  13. Haha, this is awesome! Heck, I thought we named everything but we’ve never named a dishwasher before. We’re renters though so maybe that’s why. Our food processor is named Bruce Lee. He likes to chop things. 🙂

    I went with Shirley. She sounds like a neat freak who would never let you down.

    • Britt, I like your food processor’s name. It’s perfect! Shirley is a good name, for the reason you mentioned. I’d enjoy a dishwasher that is reliable, for once. Hope this one, whatever its name turns out to be, is a longterm keeper.

  14. I voted and chose Bruno. Here’s why: firstly, I’m all for a man doing my chores in the kitchen. When I was growing up with two sisters and a brother, he never once had to do dishes. EVER. Why? HE CLEANED OUT THE GARAGE. Big deal. That was done maybe once a year. Dishes for 6 were done every damn day, sometimes twice.

    Secondly, the name Bruno makes me think of a stocky guy with hairy arms up to his elbows in sudsy water. Sounds hardworking.

    Finally, it’s short and easy to say. “Gotta load Bruno.” Otherwise, I do love the punniness of Hieronymus.

    • nance, I’ll admit I’ve a fond place in my heart for the name, Bruno. I want a dishwasher who is up to the task, and Bruno sounds like an enforcer to me. He’s brawny, as you mentioned. With one goal, to make my dishes clean.

      Also, I agree about the unfairness of your brother’s assigned chore. If naming a dishwasher a male name makes you feel better, then how could I not contribute to your emotional well-being? 😉

  17. I had to return to prod all to vote for “Madge” in honor of my ditzy almost 90 yrs old cousin named Madge who is the real Steel Magnolia type. Classy – no way she’d speak loudly or consider washing dishes by hand. As a piano teacher her pitch is perfect – always in tune – no cacophony allowed. See? Perfect name!
    (We are so easily amused…and this is so much more fun than politics!)

    • philmouse, you make a compelling case for Madge. Your cousin sounds like the embodiment of a stylish dishwasher, such as the one we now own [and are enjoying]. And I agree, I think the reason this poll has been so popular is that everyone is sick to death of political poll numbers. With this poll, there are no backroom shenanigans– nor talk of plus or minus margins of error!

    • Phil, yes you may write in any name that you like. Of course, if your name doesn’t get enough votes, then you’ll have thrown your vote away. But sometimes the ego wants what the ego wants. 😉
