Getting Jiggy With The Flakes. It’s Snowing Here.

I’ve never intentionally tried to photograph snowflakes before.  I’ve photographed snow, of course, and I’ve snapped a few photos of some people who are flakes.  😉

But to take on the challenge of going outside with the sole purpose of photographing delicate little snowflakes as they fall from the sky is something new for me.

I rather like these early morning artsy-artsy photos, even if they aren’t the most polished ones ever.

For me the value in this challenge wasn’t perfection, but to remind myself to try new small things as I move forward through this year.  To step out into possibility.  And to get jiggy.

  2. I really like your falling snow! It’s very hard to catch on camera, at least from the few times I tried. You’d think that hail would be easier since it’s bigger but it’s not.. Your photos are really evocative of the feeling of snow, if you know what I mean. Plus, I’m glad it’s there, not here.

    • Zazamataz, I figured there must be something tricky to photographing falling snow considering how few photos I’ve seen of it. Don’t know that I’ll try it again [or hail for that matter]. But one must try new things if one is to advance one’s photographic talents, mustn’t one? 😉

  4. Wow! That’s a lot of snow! I love all the photos. The ambiance is great. They really made me feel like I was there….and made me feel cold! But really, these are beautiful. Nice job!!

    • Beth, this was a weird snow fall. Because it’s been so warm these last few weeks, the snow that fell on the concrete melted away. But the snow on the landscape piled up. It is now, however, quite cold everywhere.

  5. Interesting pictures. I little Currier and Ives-y. I would try that but you have to go out in the cold. It is also snowing here (sort of) and we are getting a cold snap in a day. Counting down until spring myself.

    • Kate, this was a spontaneous decision to go outside and see what would happen. New camera, ‘ya know? Curious me, ‘ya know? I don’t think any professional photographers need worry about my skillz, but it was fun to try.

    • joey, thanks. I like that photo, too. Although I couldn’t tell you how I made it happen, so I suspect it’ll be my one dabble into the world of snowflake artsy-fartsy-ness.

  8. Very pretty! I wasn’t thrilled to get snow yesterday, but since it’s February in Ohio, I figured I couldn’t complain. Good for you for taking advantage of it in such an artistic way.

We missed that kind of piling up snow… but we have the kind today that kinda makes the ground look white and makes it just slick enough that you have to be careful driving…. but nothing you can take a picture of. I think the only photos I have where you can see the flakes were taken when it was still dark. They tend to be invisible to the camera in the light…

    • evilsquirrel13, I was up early this morning when I realized I might be able to photograph the snowflakes using my new snazzy camera. You’re right, the snowflakes were only visible because it was dark outside. Fun to do this once, not something I need to try and photograph again.

    • Thanks, la p. Like I said above, I’m not sure that I’ll ever attempt to photograph snowflakes again, but it was worth a try. I agree about the glow of the light. Very pretty, almost eerie.

  13. Loved that “people who were flakes” comment-a true LOL. I enjoy snow,but can rarely get a decent photo of it falling. Once it’s on the ground and all our big trees, it makes for spectacular pictures, even for a novice like me. It was 65 ish here today, and mentally, we are done with winter. But it may not be finished with us.

    • Margaret, my sense of humor is subtle– and based on the truth! [Some people, so flakey.] Trying to photograph snowflakes was tricky. I took about three gazillion photos and only a few were sort of okay. Glad I challenged myself to try, but I’m going back to being a basic photographer again. Specific items, sharp photos.

  14. Pretty pictures, but aaarrgghhh—THIS SNOW! I’ve lived in NEO my whole life, and I still detest and resent snow. Now comes our polar plunge, which means it is sticking around. Blargh.

    You have a lovely landscape and home. I know you enjoy and take care of it, whether by yourselves or by hiring good people. I hope your neighbors appreciate your efforts.

    • nance, this last snow “event” was more subtle than most. It is more clean looking this time, but its charm wore off within hours of me posting these photos.

      Thanks. After a professional spring clean-up + planting, we do the outside work, keeping the mess at bay. Occasionally a neighbor will stop & say things look pretty, but around here when people are outside they’re more focused on their phones than they are on nature.
