… is a slang phrase that I stumbled upon while reading blogs.

When I began to see it written around ye olde worldwide web I needed to know what it meant.  Upon learning that it’s a way of saying someone is crazy in a cool way, I decided to adopt this phrase as my very own and use it in polite conversation.

This is because I have found over the years that one can never have too many vague, but accurate, ways to tell someone else that he or she is slightly out of his or her mind, but you like them anyhow.

  3. I’ve never heard that one either. I’m thinking you live too far east. Interesting how phrases like that vary by region. Everyone in Wyoming stared at me when I said someone was as slow as mud runnin’ up a hill, but then I looked at them dumbfounded when they told me talking to someone else was like buttin’ a stump.

    • Zazzy, I think you’re onto something with the regional nature of many of these sayings. I’ve heard your mud one, but not the stump one. In fact, I’d say that your Wyoming friends were cuckoo bananas for saying that! 😉

    • nrhatch, I know! I had the same reaction. Of course, that commercial has also put me in a mind to dance around the inside of the house while I sing that song. Very effective advertising.

  5. I love that commercial! I eat a banana every day. But I have to admit that I put them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh all week, and it really works. Maybe I’m “cuckoo bananas”!

  6. My husband is the banana eater in the family. I will only eat them when they are yellow but without any brown spots. They are like that for 2 hours so it’s a very short window.

  7. I wanted to dance like Chiquita when I was little lol…cuckoo bananas in the best of ways!
    My one yr old goes through bananas like nothing else. When he watches me slice them he shakes like a Chihuahua. (Spelled right? Oh well)

    • bitsfromheaven, I think that the dancing banana lady’s hat + little jacket are delightful. I need them for Halloween. Your one year old must really like bananas to get that excited. I love it!

    • Margaret, I’d enjoy knowing what you find out if you decide to research PacNW sayings. I didn’t think about the regionality of what I’m writing about here, but I’m beginning to see that it’s a variable. Who knew?

  10. Ok it’s 12am and I’ve been humming the Chiquita banana song all day! And now it’s 12:01 am and I can’t sleep. Guess what I’m doing next my favorite bean? That’s right…eating a banana. Vengeance is mine!

    • evilsquirrel13, you bring up a good point about how bananas are shipped. Perhaps modern day bananas are less susceptible to the cold than the older bananas “discussed” in this commercial? Who knows for sure?

  13. A rare phrase? We always used it. “Bananas” was kind, not ridicule. Usually accompanied by kids crossing their eyes and circling their finders in opposite directions by their ears…looked really goofy…which was of course, “bananas” .
    I can’t believe people don’t know/say this one. It is so useful even now

    • philmouse, I’d forgotten all about the gestures when calling someone bananas. Thanks for the reminder. I don’t remember anyone saying “cuckoo” before bananas back then, so maybe it’s a new saying or I’ve forgotten the finer nuances of name-calling. 🙂
