Holy crap on a cracker!
… is one of those things people say when stuff goes wrong in a weird way. I couldn’t tell you when or where I first saw or heard this saying, but I know that I say it from time-to-time.
When I started researching this phrase’s derivation, I discovered that some sources say that “crap on a cracker” is a polite way of re-stating what my FIL, a Korean War vet, would describe as: “sh!t on a shingle.”
I dunno if that’s true, but it makes for a good story.
What I do know to be true about this phrase is that it’s been made popular by Kaley Cuoco’s character Penny on The Big Bang Theory.
And that’s all I can tell you, my gentle readers, about holy crap on a cracker! 😉

I’ve been served things that resemble ‘crap on a cracker’ both on a plate and in life. I find my self saying it often lol. And Big Bang Theory is my go to show on the dvr.
(The immature teenager in me wants to know if you’re going to be discussing things like ‘Parmesan all over your eggplant’ or ‘pudding on my vanilla wafer’…?)LOL

bitsfromheaven, I love TBBT and watch re-runs of it when I’m cooking dinner or catching up on email at night or playing games on my iPad. And as for your questions… you’ll have to wait and see. 😉

I blame Penny as well, and have loved that phrase since I originally heard in on BBT. There are moments when it is the only way to describe a situation… 🙂

I didn’t realize the BBT connection. My dad, also a Korean War vet, was more inclined to use the shingle phrase. By they way, it took me til now to realize you were doing food sayings that have nothing to do with food. I’m a little slow. And I love it. Seems like it will be quite the challenge.

Zazzy, I remember hearing people say this phrase since way back forever. I think TBBT made the saying more universal. Yep, my theme is talking the talk about food, although some letters will be more literally about food because that’s how it’s going to be. My blog, my rules. 😉

I watch Big Bang Theory, but I don’t remember that one. But it’s catchy! I think I’ll start using it. I’m sure I’ll get an eye roll or two from my teen sons when I do.

I heard that phrase from WWII vets and my dad in reference to Spam…which never entered our house no matter what the recipe sounded like.

It deserved that Sh– on a Shingle label. Dad swore he’d never eat it again…and he didn’t. (But I do laugh a bit at Span’s new ads on TV – the younger generation has no memories of what it was to the oldsters)

We had shit on a shingle for dinner when it was the end of the month and my parents were running out of money. (teachers get paid once a month) It was toast with creamed tuna. I actually loved it. 🙂

I am much more familiar with the sh!t on a shingle phrase… in fact, I was thinking you were turning that phrase into something PG-13 until I remembered it was shingle and not cracker. I don’t watch BBT nor have I heard anyone use crap on a cracker yet…

evilsquirrel13, I heard the phrase before TBBT but Penny has made it popular, at least online among bloggers. I say it once in a while when the situation warrants. More often than you might imagine, actually.

My dad was also a fan of “sh!t on a shingle” when in need of a catchy phrase. He also said it was the name they used for a meal of corned beef on noodles that they served when he was in the service during WWII? Does your FIL remember that?

Nancy, I’ve not heard FIL talk about that meal, but will ask him next time I see him. FIL was in Korea, so maybe different wars, different “sh!t on a shingle?” [Now there’s a sentence!]
