O Is For Orange, Okay Then

… is the punch line to a knock-knock joke that I believe all English-speaking children learn at about age 4.  Maybe a little older or younger, I dunno.

It’s just a goofy way of playing around with words, and means literally: Aren’t you happy that I did not say banana?  The humor in this saying is that the spoken word “orange” sounds phonetically like the spoken words “aren’t you.”

I’m not a connoisseur of le knock-knock jokes, so I rarely, if ever, say the above phrase.  However, considering that my A To Z Challenge theme is Food: Talking the Talk, this phrase fits right in.

  1. I did always love the Orange you glad I didn’t say banana? jokes as well as the Olive you one. Funny the things we remember from childhood. Some stuff just sticks.
    Also, I love oranges, and now I’m sad cause I want one and I’m out. Perhaps I’ll express my feelings through limerick. Or not. Maybe I’ll just drink this coffee 🙂

  2. I don’t get it. I mean, I *get* the play on words with orange, but I’ve never got the humour of this joke. It is the orange or the banana?

  10. That’s got to be one of the first jokes I ever learned. I like the interrupting cow better, but then I only heard that this past year when I watched Home.

    • Zazamataz, this joke is a classic that either makes people happy or makes people mutter. At least that’s what I’m learning from the comments on this post.

  14. i know you’re not talking about the color orange but my favorite color is orange so i had to comment. and when i say orange is my favorite color, i mean i’m totally obsessed with it. my car is orange, my computer bag is orange, my purse is orange, my cup is orange, most of my clothes are orange etc etc
