X Is For XXXX Sugar, Top This Sort Of Excellence

Screen Shot 2016-03-21 at 11.04.48 AM“Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch, you know that I love you.  I can’t help myself, ‘cuz I love you and nobody else.”

These are the lyrics of a classic Motown song by the Four Tops, who have sung this song for decades.  This song mentions sugar, but we do not know if that sugar is XXXX [powdered] or granulated.

Now do we?

This means that for purposes of this A To Z Challengewhich never seems to end, I believe that the sugar mentioned in the above quote is of a fancy XXXX powdered variety, and not merely your everyday granulated sugar.

It could be true.

So please, my gentle readers, indulge me as I snap my finger and wink my eye, sharing, what I’m going to say is, a perfectly acceptable post regarding the letter “X.”

Top that, people!

  1. Always love a little Four Tops first thing in the morning.

I’m trying to cut back on my sugar intake, which is already slight, by using less in my morning coffee. I really do like sweet coffee with generous half-n-half, but I have reached a point where I have to ask, “Is this Coffee or is it Cream and Sugar?” Artificial sweeteners are a Big No, thanks to migraine.

Anyway, as anyone will tell you, Sugar Is Sugar, so it doesn’t really matter if I would use real maple syrup, honey, agave, or Sugar. I am Cutting Back, period.

(All this Self-Denial is making me feel like a monk.)

    • nance, I’ve been singing along to this song since I first found it to put it into this post. It’s a catchy tune which I’ve decided works for this letter.

I don’t do any artificial sweeteners either. I use sugar or not. Fortunately I like my coffee black or with a bit of milk, but I admire your monk-like self-denial when facing your mornings a little less sweetly. 🙂

  2. Well, I’ve never heard of XXXX sugar so I had to google it first. I knew icing sugar (as we call it) was called powered in America but XXXX sounded more like a specialist movie than a sweet treat…

    • Barbed Words, XXXX sugar is an old-fashioned way to refer to powdered sugar. I don’t say it, but it fit into my theme so I used it. Desperate letters call for desperate measures.

  3. I was thinking of flour in bagged marked “XXXX”, but maybe it was sugar… and heck, I only remember it from cartoons anyway. There are a ton of great sugar songs, but not many about flour… not even from the flour power days of the 60’s…

    • evilsquirrel13, I remember those cartoon bags, too. I don’t know why powdered sugar came to be 4X, but that’s what the internets tell me… so it must be true, right?
