Blogging Tip #88: When Your Writing Mojo Melts Away, Colorful Photos Work

Personal blogging is difficult when your writing mojo melts away.

This problem may, or may not, be a result of your air conditioner breaking as June begins, and the temps + humidity skyrocket.

Said lack of coolness in the air could leave you hot + cranky, without the inclination to sit down, to write something pithy, to fulfill your personal blogging goal to show up to your blog at least once a week.

 If that should happen to you may I suggest that fussing around with your words isn’t worth it;  instead post a few photos, preferably colorful + pretty.

And then promise your gentle readers, who you hope are an understanding lot, that you’ll be back next week after the AC is fixed– and, we can only hope, your writing mojo returns.

  2. The weather here is wonderful. That’s another problem. Hard to write when it’s just gorgeous to be outside. Sorry about your A/C. Over the weekend we had super hot weather and we turned our A/C on early. Normally we don’t use it until July. Sending you cool thoughts and wet drinks.

    • Kate, I need cool thoughts, wet drinks and a repair service that can get here before Friday afternoon. The first two items I can make happen myself, but the AC will be off until someone else makes it work again. And man-oh-man is it hot inside this house, not much better outside. *mutter*

    • nrhatch, thanks for the cool words of encouragement. 🙂 I’m not keen on being hot, but I’m even less keen on not following through with what I say I’d do. I’m conscientious, or nuts, to a fault.

  5. The photos are very pretty. That sucks about your air conditioning. It is supposed to 105 here today – this heat is starting way too early this year. Have you considered a stay at a hotel for a couple of days (for the A/C)?

    • SD Gates, glad you liked the photos. I thought they were cheery. Our hot temps are about a month ahead here. This is July weather. I’ve considered the hotel stay idea and haven’t ruled it out. Especially if the AC cannot be fixed on Friday and this continues over the weekend.

    • Thanks Allie P. I figure when the words won’t line up and make sense, the photos will. I’ll get back to wordsmithing after the AC is repaired, but until then photos it is.

  7. Oye! No AC is a huge bummer. We live in a very humid state and ours broke and needed replacing on an Independence Day weekend…
    Fear not! Your photos did the trick, especially that last one, in which I would suggest several daily for your ills. 💜

    • bitsfromheaven, I can’t imagine how long you had to wait to get your AC fixed over a holiday weekend! I’m okay with heat if there’s a breeze, but add humidity and I turn frizzy + grumpy. That martini, which I had over the weekend, is the first one I’ve had in years. It was good. Your advice is sound.

  8. Oh my word. The horror. You poor dear. No doubt you’ve got to let slide those martinis as soon as they’re shaken, to get the icy chill they bring. I’m certain sorbet and cold chunks of fruit help as well.
    I can tell you living while waiting for the furnace to be repaired was a sorta tragic weekend, but without AC I am an insufferable bitch. All summer, it is the first blessing I count. I know a great deal about how to make sure it isn’t a self-fixing issue, and should you wonder, please don’t hesitate to Contact Me on my page. Otherwise, in this your hour of suffering, please know I would box up some icy air and send it to you if I could. My thoughts are with you during this most heinous of times.

    • joey, I can see that you understand my problem. I’m not a person meant for hot humid days. My hair rebels. My brain shuts down. My life irritates me. Not happy. We’ve tried all the usual AC fixes, but to no avail. So while I wait for the repair person, I’m falling in love with fans and obsessed with cool beverages. Botheration, I tell you. Glad you liked the photos. I thought they were pretty, too.

    • Barbed Words, our June is usually warm and breezy, but this year we’ve gone straight to hot and humid. Naturally this would be the time for the AC to stop working, right when it’s needed. The whole situation is just annoying. *humph*

    • nance, that’s the crux of it: I’m uncomfortable in my own home. And short of going to live inside my car, I’m stuck here, waiting. It’s a dumb problem, but to be this hot this early in the summer is infuriating. I miss my AC.

    • Jim, I may be a laid-back person but I do [occasionally] have a few goals in life! Just a few. So when I’m thwarted by a machine that should know better than to break down just when I need it, I get cranky. But I pulled through the heat and wrote this post, so all’s well that ends well… preferably in a cool 68ºF room. 😉

  13. I feel your pain, Ally. My zero tolerance for heat and humidity would send my mojo running too. . . along with every ounce of pithiness I possess. Hang in there.

    • Carol, thanks for your support. The AC compressor isn’t that old so it should be working, but alas it ain’t. Probably the most interesting thing about this has been learning how many other people feel the same way as I do about heat + humidity. Makes me wonder how Ernest Hemingway ever wrote anything living down there in the Florida Keys. o.0

      • A couple weeks ago we tried turning on our AC but it wouldn’t run. The service guy came to the house. Turns out we forgot to flip the switch on the AC unit down in the basement. Service charge: $55.00.

  14. I was not born for an un-aircondioned world. I hope that your’s is fixed posthaste!

    I need to go take some pretty photos. Your’s were delightfully refreshing. All I seem to think or write or talk about is packing up stuff. It’s nice to vent about it now and then but there are pretty things in life as well. Thanks for reminding me.

    • Zaz, I realize this is not a tragedy but I’m too hot to think straight so I don’t like it. I can understand why packing is on your mind. It’s kind of like how heat is on my mind now. Of course, in both our cases, we’ll get through it soon enough. And in the meantime, go enjoy something pretty outside!

    • Stephanie, what is it about holiday weekends and AC breaking? We realized ours wasn’t working on Memorial Day evening after being outside for the day. Dumb machine. I’m at one with fans right now. Not the same thing as cool air, but moving hot air is better than a sauna. Never thought of one of those window units… Hmmm?

  18. I’m back and taking my usual place as comment-writer #40-something. Sorry to hear your A/C is on the fritz (but secretly happy to have the occasion to use the expression, “on the fritz”). As it’s now the weekend, I can only hope the repair person has come & gone with much success, followed by much martini-glass-clinking and rejoicing.

    • Letizia, that’s exactly what happened to me. Total slug. Then *boom* when the AC started working, my brain [such as it is] started working again, too. Feeling like this week might be more productive for me.
