I Am Clumsy But With My Priorities In The Right Place

I fell on my face at Goodwill. Literally.

On a beautiful sunny afternoon, I parked in front of the donation door at our local Goodwill.  I started pulling items out of the trunk of my car, and was carrying two folding chairs, one in each hand, when I tripped over a 3″ high little curb painted a jazzy shade of yellow.

And with that I face-planted myself on the cement sidewalk.

Save for a small scratch on the little finger side of my left hand & a scrape on the top of my right ankle, I didn’t hurt myself.  I went down too quickly to even tense up, plus I’m somewhat plump in my older years which helped keep me safe.

I kind of bounced more than I splatted.

I’ll admit that it was a fascinating experience to calmly realize that I was falling face down onto the sidewalk with no way to stop myself.  No one near me to catch me.

Just me on my own, falling down. Unceremoniously.

And what was going through my addled brain as this was happening?  Well, to be honest, and you wouldn’t want me to be anything but that, I was thinking: “Hmmm… well at least this will make for a good story.”

Yep, no need to worry about me, my gentle readers, I have my priorities in order.

  1. Priorities are everything Ally Bean – there was something beautifully and artfully balanced about the fall, left pinkie, right ankle, face in centre – but, jokes aside, glad it wasn’t worse … from whence cometh those things to trip us up (or, to be grammatically correct, up with which to trip us) –

  2. Oh my! This story brought me back to you slicing your finger on a can lid in college! Now that was not a good outcome! So thankful that you didn’t hurt yourself as much this time. Your thought process cracks me up! And this did make for a good story:)

  3. Poor Ally! So glad you weren’t hurt worse, especially with two folding chairs to tangle up in. The last time I did something like that my sunglasses pushed into my face and I had a terrific black eye for a week! Glad I’m not the only one who looks for blog posts every chance I get 🙂

    • Janet, somehow I had the sense to shove the chairs aside as I fell down. No black eye for me, which sounds like a lousy experience for you. Wouldn’t suggest this is the best way to have a story to write about here, but since it happened…

  4. This is the BEST kind of story – relatable by the audience, some drama, a bit of comic relief, and the heroine walks away with her dignity still (somewhat) intact 😀

Any story that doesn’t end in a visit to the ER is a happy ending 🙂

  5. My fall from a ladder four months ago (which, unfortunately did include a trip to the ER and hip surgery) generated similar blog-related thoughts. First, I was worried that I’d miss being able to post for the Cherished Blogfest happening that weekend, and second, deciding that if I got back home from the hospital in time, I’d be able to write about my accident. Done and done. I’m glad your face plant was relatively minor in the greater scheme of things.

    • Retirementallychallenged, oh what a dreadful thing to happen to you! ER and surgery is no fun. While I’m sure that what you wrote on your blog was wonderful, there must be an easier way to find blog fodder. I trust you are healed now. And yes, this face plant was not a big deal, just kind of annoying.

  6. I do the same. It’s not us, it is the earth out to get us with its sneaky sudden shifts. I bet that 3″ curb was only 2.89″ inches just seconds before you tried to cross it. Totally not your fault.

  7. I’m so glad you’re OK! It’s scary to fall and know that you can do nothing to stop it. I have fallen twice in the past 6 months–once on a hike where my friend Henry had to drag me up back up the hill. The other time I was running and tripped over a pushed up curb. I went flying but landed mostly in beauty bark. Ouch.

    • Margaret, falling was scary & so weird under the circumstances. I wasn’t feeling rushed, just pleased with myself for getting the stuff to Goodwill. Then *boom* down I went. I remember your hike scenario, but not your running experience which sounds lucky, but ouchy. Honestly, if it’s not one thing it’s another…

  8. Bless your safe landing and any plumpness that helped you bounce. I haven’t fallen in almost a month. I fall a lot. I’m due to fall. Mostly I fall outside, no one sees or my kids laugh, and generally, my dog abandons me to chase critters.
I’m so glad you weren’t injured!

  9. Glad you’re OK and that it at least gave you a story. The other day, I was singing, walked down to the mailbox, got the mail, tripped on the curb on my way back up the driveway… Managed to include a line about my tripping as I tripped. For my art! 🙂
