Be The Light: “You’ve Got To Have Friends”

INTRODUCTION:

I’ve joined in a yearlong monthly event called We Are The World Blogfest.  

The purpose of this event is to highlight positive news stories, whatever they might be, presenting them on your blog on the last Friday of the month.

This being the last Friday of July, I have a story to share with you, my gentle readers.

THE NEWS STORY:  

This is a simple story with funny photos.  The gist of this story is best understood in its title: To Prove A Point, This Woman Wore Her ’90s Bridesmaid Dress Everywhere.

As explained in the article, the reason the bridesmaid wore her dress everywhere was to poke fun at her friend, the bride– who recently apologized to her bridesmaids for making them wear these dresses years ago.

The bridesmaid, who took umbrage at this apology, showed her friend, the bride, that she, the bridesmaid, loved the dress and then wore it as she did her daily activities.  She even provided photographic proof.

MY COMMENTARY:

This story, which is totally absurd, made me laugh out loud.

It reminded me that a longtime friendship like the one described in this article is rare and true and needs to be celebrated.

I mean think about it: who do you know who’d do something as goofy as wearing a bridesmaid dress while doing her daily activities just to make you laugh– and eat your words?

My answer: only a dear friend, that’s who!

And it’s for this reason that I share with you this small, silly, happy news story proving that a bit of humor can go a long way toward making life more positive and enjoyable.

Like they say, you gotta have friends.

    • Zen-Den, not likely. My wedding dress is a puny little size that I haven’t worn in decades. Now the headpiece I probably could still wear– and wouldn’t that be grand? 😉

  3. I saw the article and laughed. I was in a few weddings. NEVER ONCE wore the damn dress again. One was a long gown with a split skirt (think floppy pants that looked like a gown). Every time you went to the potty you cleaned the floor with it. Ewww! Trash can! Loved the woman’s sense of humor (and that she actually still had the dress).

  4. I loved that story! And what a kick that she still had that dress AND could still wear it.

    And, let’s face it–no one is ever going to wear a bridesmaid dress again. EVER. I really applaud the current brides who give their attendants a colour scheme and ask them to wear/get an outfit they like in that palette. Wedding expenses have become outrageous.

    • nance, this story tickled my funny bone. Like you said, bridesmaid dresses have traditionally been something you wear once. That this woman even thought to wear hers again, and stage pics, is brilliant. I agree that the current trend of a color scheme, then whatever with the dress, makes sense. Although eloping makes even more sense to me.

    c) That is one unattractive dress (just because of the doily effect, really).

  10. I have been in two weddings and while one of the bridesmaid dresses I never wore again, the other one I did keep in my closet. It was a beautiful blue and had lots of pleats so while the bodice was form fitting, the skirt part was loose and flowy. I was able to wear it 10 years after the wedding when I was pregnant and needed a fancy dress for a formal dinner at the Elk’s Lodge. The pleats perfectly went over my expanding stomach. I did finally get rid of the dress but I kinda wish I had kept it longer! Nice post for the WATWB.

  12. Great story Ally. I think that I was a bridesmaid only once and had to wear a god-awful emerald green satin thing that was hideous. Now my bridesmaids wore truly fashionable peach with a lovely lace high neck bodice and of all things, peach floppy sun hats. What was a I thinking…

  15. I saw the pictures and they were fantastic. I can’t believe she still fits into the dress. I would need to lose at least 20 pounds to fit into any of mine, if I even still have them.

    • Margaret, I think almost all of us would need to lose weight to fit into anything we wore 20+ years ago! But to be able to do so, and then to wear this dress… hilarious. Love this woman.

    • Betsy, I agree. I like people who have a sense of humor and don’t take themselves too seriously, so this story called to me. Plus, like you said, saving a bridesmaid dress for over 20 years is a feat in and of itself. What’s not to love?

  17. I laughed when I read this, too! Great choice 🙂
    I swear, the closer the friend, the uglier the dress. Lawd. The worst one was the red satin strapless thing with the useless drape scarf. I couldn’t beat them off with a stick because I had to hold onto that stupid drape! The only place to wear such a dress was on the corner. I teased the bride that the busty bridesmaids in red made her look even more pure in her white lace, and she said she just wanted to make sure we got—-
    Anyway, true story.

    • joey, your story is hilarious. So thoughtful of lacy white bride to be concerned for your… well being. Red satin isn’t the most demure look for a bridesmaid, plus what was with the scarf? More drama? I beat that today the photo of the whole wedding party makes it look like an artifact in time, rather like the photo of the wedding party in this story.

  20. I loved the dress I wore in your wedding, plus I already owned it! So I wore it several times. Loved your dress,too! It was timeless. So awesome that this gal could still fit into her dress!

    • Beth, yes, your bridesmaid dress was pretty. It was a great color on you + you got to pick it out so you liked it. 🙂 My wedding dress is hanging in a guest room closet, waiting for someone to want it– or me to get rid of it, I guess.

      I loved the blue color of the dress I wore in your wedding, but that dress is long gone– too many moves and too many pounds over the years to keep it.

    • Joanne, I know! I laughed so hard when I saw the photos of both the wedding party back then and the bridesmaid now. I cannot imagine how you could be the same size 22 years later, but obviously this woman is, so why not have some fun?

  23. Hi Ally – loved this story … my bridesmaids couldn’t do this to me – I didn’t have any! But when I was leaving South Africa, the squash club organised a farewell supper + (heavens above I still just about die thinking about it) one of those gorilla ‘visitors’ which (or was it who ?) made me do things or tried to do things to me – everyone else was in absolutely stitches … me I was trying to join in … was distinctly unhappy! Never really discussed it with anyone … mortified that they did it to me!!! Clever bridesmaid is all I can say – reminds me of the Freddie Mercury video with him in an apron and a hoover … he did have a few other clothes on – !! Cheers Hilary

      I agree that this bridesmaid was clever to wear her old bridesmaid dress… just to bug her friend. There was something about this story that I thought was the essence of friendship, and as such, positive.
