3 True Confessions Because You, My Gentle Readers, Need To Know

One

It’s entirely possible that I’m not going to be an Instagram star.

Since November I’ve tried to get into my Instagram groove by posting three photos a week, usually all at once (because I forget to post them when I take them).  Also, I’m following a few people there because social media is, after all, social.

HOWEVER, easy and sweet as I think Instagram is, it isn’t calling to me.  For some reason its charms have yet to woo me.  I like it, I enjoy glancing at the photos posted there, but I’m vague about why it’s a thing– and why/how someone becomes a star.

I’m enjoying the Winter Olympics this year because they are Bob-Costas-free.

Sure, some people somewhere must have liked Bob Costas as the host of the Olympics, but I was not one of them.  To me he combined Alex Trebek’s know-it-all-ness with Tom Cruise’s smugness– and I did not like him because of it.

HOWEVER, NBC’s new Winter Olympics host, Mike Tirico, is delightful.  He reports on what is happening in a pleasant, informative way that does not make me want to yell at him.  And guess thee what?  Because of him I’m not changing the channel away from the Olympics when the host is on the screen.

Three

I’ve increased the size of my font on my computer.

There is no surer sign of impending decrepitude than the size of the font that one uses.  Tiny font, great eyes– young.  Medium font, okay eyes– middle age.  Large font, lousy eyes– one foot in the grave.

HOWEVER, on the flip side of this depressing thought, I have to admit that seeing the words clearly on the screen has encouraged me to sit up straighter, thereby improving my posture.  And that, Alas, poor Yorick, might be enough to keep my other foot out of the grave… for a while longer.

Gentle Readers, feel free to share your true confessions in the comment section below. How else are we going to get the party started in here?

Tell all. No matter what it is. You know I love it.

  1. I am still changing the channel when the announcers seem to get caught up in their own life story as opposed to the athletes. Other than that, I enjoy the Olympics.

Instagram holds no interest for me. I really do not like the way the almost ignore the rights of the photographers who post there.

    • Dan, I agree about the announcers. I’m sure they’re lovely people in real life, but the 2018 Winter Olympics aren’t about them. 🙄

I don’t know anything about Instagram’s darker [copyright infringement?] side. I post photos I take with my iPhone– which is to say pics that are not all that great. Although I see people who are professional photographers there, so I dunno.

      • I don’t know much about Instagram, but I’ve had several contacts who have had photos taken from them, only to see them being sold elsewhere by someone else on Instagram. It doesn’t matter to me (it’s not like I’m uploading artwork).

          • I’m not sure theft is the right word but their license says that if you share a photo publicly, other can reshare it. Flickr adopted very similar language, but only within the Verizon community of companies.

I changed all of my Flickr photos to “friends & family” instead of private. Several of my photos of a home improvement project turned up on s contractor’s site under “our projects” – They were clearly suggesting that they had made/installed the item in the photos. I asked them to remove the pictures but they ignored my request.

            Liked by 1 person

            • That’s a sad story, but one that doesn’t entirely surprise me. I left Flickr after someone set up an account using my initials then stole my photos and put them on this account as their own. I’ve never figured out to what end. They were just average photos, but this person needed to do that for some reason.

I’ll stay on Instagram for a while longer, but unless something about it grabs me, I could easily dispense with it forever. Social media is great… until it isn’t.

  2. The announcers for the Olympics don’t seem as excited as in other years (or maybe that’s me). I like the new guy but I didn’t watch much of Bob Costas (remember when he had that eye thing going on? Made my eyes water just watching him until they pulled him off the assignment.) The ice skate dancers last night were fabulous. I stayed up to watch them all.

    Liked by 2 people

    • Kate, I wonder if the announcers don’t seem as excited because they’re trying to keep track of what time it is in the US while working hours that are on Korean time. They must feel a bit out of kilter, don’t you suppose?

I like the ice dancers, but couldn’t stay up last night. However with the interwebs at my fingertips, I can watch any event any time. And I do like that.

  3. Confession #1 ~ I’ve only watched a bit of the Olympics this year ~> we watched The Walk (Netflix) on Friday night, Victoria (PBS) on Sunday night, Wonder (Netflix) on Tuesday night, and last night we watched 2 Valentine’s Specials ~ one funny (stand up comics) and the other a countdown to the 14 most Romantic films.

Confession #2 ~ I don’t feel guilty about missing the Olympics this year.

Confession #3 ~ I don’t know what (if anything) we watched on Saturday night (maybe the Olympics? Alpine Ski Jumpers? Snow falling on skiers?).

Eyesight may be the first to go, but memory is usually following it out the door! 😀

    • nancy, I haven’t been glued to the TV during the Olympics, [I never am] but I like not seeing/hearing Bob Costas when I am watching. He bugged me.

There is no guilt when it comes to the Olympics, imho. Watch what you want, enjoy what you will. When you get down to it… it’s all about what object you’ll have with you while you slide across some frozen water formation, either flat or hilly.

Hadn’t thought about how my mind is sure to follow my eyes. Aren’t you just a bundle of good news? 😉

    • Jill, I gave myself a time limit of three months to see if I liked Instagram or not– and here’s the thing: I’m totally indifferent to it. I don’t get the attraction, but I don’t hate it either.

I’ve heard many a woman swoon over Alex… Your secret is safe with me.

  4. I barely use social media, and could care less about the Olymics, so that covers two confessions in one. I remember (YAY) when I reached the point of enlarging my fonts. It came at about the same time that I couldn’t understand why, even though I was cleaning my glasses repeatedly, that I still couldn’t see a damn thing.
Cataracts! I revelled in decreasing back to my usual medium size font once they were taken care of 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • Deb, I like to try social media, but have no problem walking away from the ones that don’t suit me. I’ve never been FOMO [fear of missing out]. I only wish someone could explain to me the draw of Instagram.

I just had my eyes checked and cataracts aren’t my problem. Nothing that exciting. No, my problem is old eyes that have never been that good to begin with. However, now that the font is larger I’m feeling younger. Go figure!

  5. LOL I’ve used larger font on my computer (and my cellphone!) for a few years now so you’re in good company 🙂 I admit that I have not watched ANY of the Olympics, not even the opening ceremony, which I usually try to do, at least to see the USA come in…Gangnam Style doesn’t say USA to me. Wait, I have seen about two minutes of whatever that is that requires the use of a huge puck across the ice – kind of like bocce ball. How is that a sport? Almost all announcers irritate me, except Kruik and Kuip (my SF Giants announcers). Those guys I can tolerate, but maybe it’s just because I like my Giants baseball…Happy Thursday, Ally. Nice to see you here more often!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Janet, I’m glad to know that I’m not alone with this larger font. I mean on the one hand it’s no big deal, but on the other hand it makes me feel OLD.

I’m usually not fussy about announcers [as long as they don’t shout], but Bob Costas always bothered me. I’m pleased that he’s gone. I’m not watching a lot of the Olympics, but when I do this new host guy is my kind of mellow.

I worry about posting too often. Thanks for letting me know that I’m doing things right.

      • Oh yeah, in regard to Instagram, it is one more way for me to keep up with what my kids are doing, especially now that they are all grown and living on their own. A mom needs to know, right? Plus, I use it to showcase some of my most recent creations. I’ve actually gotten a sale because someone saw my cards there. I don’t use it too much though, I’m always afraid of being too pushy but on the other hand if no one sees them, how will they know they want them? You definitely don’t post too often. I could read your quippiness every day.

        Liked by 1 person

        • I can understand why Instagram is useful for you, as a mom. I don’t hate it, but I’m finding it kind of ho-hum I guess. And then I read that there are Instagram stars– a concept that baffles me. What’s your name on Instagram? I’ll follow you.

Thanks for the compliment. I fear if I posted every day I’d never have the time to do anything else except sit here and write — comment — write — comment… Too much of that and I’d go batty. Well, battier.

  6. Confession 1: I’ve never tried Instagram. Oh, I downloaded the app on one of my phones, but then never used it, so it went when I changed phones.
Confession 2: I now keep a pair of over-the-counter reading glasses by my computer – my regular glasses make me hold my neck at a funny angle. My biggest complaint: trying to read the fine print on packaging – like the ingredients in products. Can anyone read that baby fine print?
Confession 3: I’m watching a lot more of the Olympics this year than I have in the past – but then, I’m also sitting more than I have in the past. If they could tell me precisely what time the figure skating would be on, I would probably watch less. But watching the half-pipe snowboarding was exciting, I gotta say.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Carol, I had the Instagram app on my phone for over a year before I did something with it. I like it, but see no purpose for it… other than to waste time, I guess.

My newfound large font is amazing. I’m sitting up straighter, squinting less, and feeling like maybe I should have done this months ago. Now, if only there was an easy way to make the font larger on packaging! I’m with you on that point.

I like that half-pipe snowboarding, too. I’ve always been a sucker for watching figure skating, but this “new” snowboarding is way cool. Those kids are nuts to do it, but I’ll watch.

      Liked by 1 person

  7. I don’t THINK I need to change my font yet, but my eyes, after being fixed by cataract surgery, are deteriorating. Maddening! True confessions: I am very sick of the snowboarding events in the Olympics. I am much more neurotic and obsessive than I let on. There are many days when I wish I hadn’t retired.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Margaret, I remember when you had your cataract surgery. I’m sorry that it doesn’t mean that your eyes won’t deteriorate further. There’s nothing awful with this larger font, in fact it’s delightful. It’s just what it means that bothers me.

I don’t mind the snowboarding, but I find the luge tedious. Oh goody, I think, they’re sliding down an icy shoot again. *yawn*

I have to believe that the transition from teaching to being on your own is gradual. You’re just in process right now. Eventually it’ll all be wonderful and you’ll be comfortable with your new normal.

  8. I’m with you on the Olympics host, mostly because I also detest Bob Costas. Why the baseball writers voted him into the Hall of Fame still makes no sense.

Instagram’s fun to look at, but I’m not much of a photographer, so all I post out there are the badges from my Two Dots victories. Figure I should post them somewhere…

    Liked by 1 person

    • John, I don’t know what there is about Costas, but I’ve never cared for him. Odd that baseball writers liked him enough to put him in the Hall of Fame. Oh well, good for him.

Instagram is ok. I don’t hate it or think it’s the ruination of society, but I feel like I’m missing something essential about it. Something that everyone else gets about it.

  9. Confession #1 – although like you, I am not really sure of the point of instagram, I do like it, probably because I am a picture hound😁.

Confession #2 – I watch the Canadian channel to watch the Olympics, mostly because the American channel only seems to focus on their own athletes. Maybe they all do, what do I know 😂

    Confession #3 – I am not there yet but I am sure it’s coming!🤓

    Liked by 1 person

    • Lynn, first of all, wonderful use of the emojis. Your comment rocks ’em. 👏

I bet that you’re right about Instagram. I like photographs, but usually only take them when they’re part of some other project. To just focus [no pun intended] on photos seems weird to me.

Now that you mention it I wonder if all countries Olympics TV coverage zeroes in on their own athletes. I’m not against that and it makes sense. At least this year the U.S. host isn’t making me crazy with his know-it-all-ness.

      Liked by 1 person

    • KDKH, I have bifocals, but have yet to hear a doc say “trifocals.” I’m sure my time is coming. And will be grateful for them when the time comes. With both the lenses and the increased font, you can read, right?

      Liked by 1 person

      • I’m usually ok. My correction is pretty extreme to begin with – one diopter less than legally blind. As long as I’m careful, I can read all day, so I’m grateful. The increased font keeps me from squinting all day. It makes my whole body feel more relaxed.

  10. Confession time? Hell’s bells on wheels … too many to confess. I like channel hopping; the Winter Olympics gives me an adrenaline rush. The latest news in our country is that the president resigned last night at the 11th hour, literally at 10.58 pm. Champagne and choc cake was the order of the day. We are in celebratory mood and my usual pessimism has swung a tiny bit to the other side with our new pres sworn in today. adrenaline rush. FB is an absolute addiction .. and there’s no ruddy time for it. There’s little time for anything – I am in panic mode.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Susan, the Winter Olympics are on one TV channel here, but all over the internet so I’m watching when time allows. A new president is an amazing development for you– and for your country. I hope all goes the best that it can, and that your chocolate cake + champagne were delicious. I don’t do FB, and haven’t found Instagram to be compelling enough to make it an addiction. It’s so easy to lose track of time when messing around on social media, isn’t it?

      Liked by 1 person

  11. I’m bored by the Olympics, largely. Especially when so many of the athletes have made it a career (e.g., Lindsey Vonn). Maybe it’s time for some of them to step aside and let some young people have their shot at representing their country/earning a medal.

Social media in general is Not My Thing. I am officially an “Old” since I have a blog, not an Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, or…geeze, I don’t even know. I do know that facebook isn’t even a thing anymore among The Youth, who want personal channels on YouTube instead.

Or so I am told. And I still cannot fathom Pinterest. Why not just save the site/picture/recipe/whatever in your own bookmarks list or on your own computer? I don’t get it. But the nice thing is, I don’t have to.

    Liked by 1 person

    • nance, I, too, wonder about how long some of these athletes can continue to call themselves amateurs, considering how much money they make in the form of room and board, plus clothing. At some point it’s ludicrous to pretend that they aren’t professionals.

I’ve tried lots of social media platforms, but dislike FB and Pinterest the most. FB because it’s premise is utter nonsense: collect “friends” then inundate them with your political views and family photos– as if everyone you’ve ever known cares about those aspects of your life. And Pinterest because people just post whatever they like, never double-checking that they have the correct source for the photo; that drove me crazy.

On the other hand, I like Twitter because it’s current, tweets are succinct, and the people who I follow are hilarious. And I like Instagram. I mean, it doesn’t irritate me and does entertain in a low-key way so that’s all good. I just can’t quite figure out if it’s adding value to my life or not.

  12. I have five pairs of dollar store reading glasses strewn about. That helps. I’ve been reading online fonts at 125% for years. Welcome to the club. Unless your number is a lot higher…

Mr. Mike at the Olympics is good, I agree. I wish they had more stories by Mary Carillo. She’s no Dick Enberg, but I think she does a good report.

As for Instagram, you’re just not posting enough food, selfies, or sunsets. Sunsets get HUGE numbers as do selfies, but I rarely turn the camera around either. Not my jam.

My confessions? Here’s one: I’m watching the Olympics and I can’t tell you how many times I said, “THIS is a SPORT?” Especially the skiing/shooting thing. Yeah, I get it, precision after getting your heart rate up to a million. But… I still don’t get WHY.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Tara, my font size is 125% so I’m just beginning to increase it. I like it, so I’m saying “whatever” about it– in a devil-may-care-free-spirited way.

I like calling him Mr. Mike. Makes me like him even more than his predecessor! And I agree about some of these sports. They’re not plausible… when you sit back and think about them… who came up with them to begin with?

Your snarky take on Instagram is spot on. It’s not that I want to be a star, it’s that I want to find it more interesting and somehow food/selfies/sunsets don’t draw me in. Go figure.

      Liked by 1 person

      • Of course, your dislike or not full enjoyment of some social media could be due to your advancing age, as your eyesight is indicating. Won’t be long until you, too, are yelling GET OFF MY LAWN! 🙂

  13. Not really a confession–I’ll leave those to you since you’re on a role–but I’ve never signed up for an Instagram account. Everyone tells me I should be on it, but that’s what they told me about Facebook too, so I got on it and now I dread visiting the site. So for now I’ll keep putting my focus on Twitter. Who has time for more social media accounts anyway?

    Liked by 1 person

    • Carrie, I didn’t like FB at all, so I left. But I’m a bit more intrigued with Instagram, if only because it’s such a non-controversial social media. Twitter I like, but have learned how to limit my time there so that I don’t get sucked into it. But Instagram? Well, I only think of it every few days, and then I whip through it quickly, wondering what I’m supposed to be getting from it.

      Liked by 1 person

  14. I haven’t watched much of the Olympics at all this year. Though I did watch a very amusing video of a couple pretending like they were in the Curling event with a roomba and a broom.

I like Instagram. I like that it doesn’t send me fifty thousand notifications as if sensing I’ve been away too long and instead is happy enough to share my picture, guilt-free when I get around to uploading it.

    Liked by 1 person

  15. Thanks, am glad I’m not the only one! I tried it, but didn’t get further than a few photos. I thought what’s the point of publishing pics, and most of the people have no idea what it is about. So I went back to my blog:):) Thank you for this confession – you’re absolved. The Priest (haha).

    • Jesh, I want to love Instagram, but I’m finding it difficult to figure out what it’s about. You’re right, people just post photos without context, which is difficult for a curious wordsmith like me. Is there more to it than that? I dunno, but thank you for the absolution.

      Liked by 1 person

      • I’m not even a wordsmith, am visually oriented, but I like to “know” what I see, and how it is significant for the person who posted it:)
The only thing I hang on to Instagram is because I knew the one who started working on Instagram, since he worked at Facebook. I knew him when he was a little kid, and showed my his robocop drawings when he became a teen – he was quite gifted, but unfortunately he died last year, only being just over 30 years old of a pool accident.

  16. I haven’t increased the font size on my computer yet but I do appreciate that the font size on your blog is nice and big… so thank you. My husband turns on the Olympics every night and I pay some attention, but I often find myself reading during it. I like Mike Tirico too – he just seems nice. Oh, and I too have an Instagram account. I don’t post much and it’s not part of my social media “plan.” I just like to post (what I think are) interesting pictures I take on my iPhone.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Janis, I have no control over the size of this blog’s font, so I’m glad to know that it’s readable. I’m like you with the Olympics, it’s on the TV and I focus on some of it– which is how I know about Mr. Mike. But most of the time it’s more background noise for me.

You’ve nailed my issue with Instagram. When I use social media I have a purpose and a plan– but Instagram doesn’t smoothly fit into my socially mediated world view. I like Instagram, sort of, more like than not like, but how it fits into my life, I dunno.

  17. Let’s see … confessions. Yes. I bought lemon cookies yesterday and that was a very bad idea. Think cookies all day long. If I was a stronger person I would throw the rest of the bag away … but I’m not. I’m weak. Very, very weak.

Oh? That wasn’t the kind of confession you meant? Sorry.
Instagram – it’s ok, I guess. I run hot and cold with my enthusiasm for it.
Olympics – meh. Every 4 years we get overly patriotic about how “we” are doing in the medal standings, and we toss around knowingly the names of athletes no one knew about only a few short months ago. Cynical? Yes. If we really cared, these athletes would be front and centre in our support in the years between the Olympics.
Eye sight – ok, I guess … if you consider about 30 pairs of readers scattered around the house anywhere close to normal 😉

    … I hear cookies calling …

    Liked by 1 person

    • Joanne, lemon cookies call loudly to me, too. Especially if there’s a bit of powdered sugar involved.

You’re right about the Olympics. All of us are fair-weather friends with these athletes, and then drop them when the games are over. I wonder why the sports news stations who have the power to direct our attention toward these kids, don’t do so?

Instagram remains a bafflement to me. When I started I decided on my theme, then I told myself I’d post three pics a week for one year so that I’d have a virtual scrapbook of my life. Only problem is, I don’t know if I want this scrapbook or not! 😉

      Liked by 1 person

      • I don’t have an IG theme. I post whatever photo strikes my fancy when inspiration hits me.
I try to keep WP and IG separate though. Whatever I post on IG, I don’t use it again on WP.

The issue I’m having is that IG is becoming too much like FB – too many commercial ads, content presented out of chronological order, more and more banal content, …

        Liked by 1 person

Could not be bothered to either take pictures or check out obsessively other people’s pictures #2 Cannot claim to care about the Olympics, with or without Bob. • camparigirl, I’m learning here that not many people are taken with Instagram! I feel somewhat validated in my lukewarm response to it. I think if I continue with it it’ll be for my own entertainment entirely, instead of as a way to be part of an online community.

I squinted for as long as I could, and now that I’ve taken the leap– am amazed by how clearly I can see things. It’s like being a kid again, only an old one!

I do not like Savannah Guthrie. I do not like her. Anywhere. Ever.
I work, eat, snuggle, read, swipe, and sleep lately. I am unaware of television and as such, the ongoings of the world.
I am slowly getting back into my Instagram. I do not wish to be a star, I just like to see all the pretties and I really enjoy how connected I feel to people with so few words. I very much enjoyed your photo with the leopard socks. I now view you AS that iconic image.
I played to the end of my word game and am now playing yours 🙂

    • joey, SG doesn’t bother me, but I respect your right to dislike her with a red hot intensity. I feel the same way about BC. We likes who we likes.

You feel connected via the Instagram images? I feel like an outsider who only knows one little piece of the puzzle. Maybe I’m following the wrong people, or maybe I’m wired wrong.

The leopard print socks are some of my winter favorites. They’re warm and stylish [?]. I shall do my best to live up to your expectations about me now that you know what kind of woman I really am.

      Liked by 1 person

      • They’re stylish. I myself cannot pull off animal prints. And also, you’ve such slim ankles.

It takes some time on IG. It takes time to see people express varying aspects. I love the people I follow. Little glimpses into their lives eventually build a big picture.

        Liked by 1 person

        • joey, my leopard print is only on accessories– and down to one pair of socks and a scarf.

You make an excellent point about allowing more time before I judge IG. I’ll stick with it, and really could care less if anyone follows me. I’m there for the fun of it, not to win a popularity contest. 🤓

  20. An IG account? I can barely keep up with a blog (I heard that snort – I know I’m behind on reading and commenting). This time of year if it’s not raining, I’me outside pushing the landscaping to shape up – shortly it will be too hot and humid to go outside (like 5 min from now…not exactly, but this morning is signal it won’t be long)
The new Olympic guy is better, but honestly I’ve watch little of the competition other than the snowboarders and free style skiers…(In my next life time, sigh. Looks so amazing…but much to painful for me now). Somehow I turned the news, then just the TV off a few months ago and rarely watch anything except what I record. OK, head in the sand isn’t so bad HAHA

    • philmouse, I started the IG account in the late fall thinking I’d learn about it and enjoy it during the winter. I have to admit that it might be the most bland social media I’ve ever tried. Don’t really know what to do with it.

I don’t watch much TV either. I’m particular about what I’ll watch so I rarely turn it on to have background noise like some people do. I’ve seen more of these Olympics than most, primarily because I’ve been trapped inside this month more than usual.

I agree about those snowboarders. I like watching them and the free style skiers, too. The speed, the grace, the movement. It’s wonderful. Much more interesting to me than team sports or curling… which I’m convinced is included in the Winter Olympics as comic relief.

Two true confessions: 1) I’m a lurker on Instagram. It took me 3 weeks to figure out how to use it! 2) I’m probably way past one-foot-in-the-grave agewise. Take comfort in that!

    Liked by 1 person

    • marian, I need new glasses, but my prescription change is minor. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of someone being told not to drive home in their new specs. You must be seeing the world in a new dramatic way now.

I can understand how you could lurk on Instagram. It’s pretty there, and there’s not much conversation– unlike the comment section of blogs. It’s fun, I guess. But I feel like Instagram might not be my #1 social media. And that’s ok.

We do watch the curling though, because we’ve played for years, and because we know how talented they are.
As for Instagram I’m still on the fence myself. Not sure I want to put any more effort or energy to grow a following there. We’ll see – the jury is still out on that one.

    • Norm, I can’t say that I’m glued to the TV during the Olympics, but I enjoy some of the events. Don’t ask me anyone’s name or finishing times, though. I don’t keep track of the deets, just like to see what some of these kids can do.

Usually I have a definite reaction to a new-to-me social media when I use it. But with IG I’m ho-hum. We’ll see how long I last there.

  23. I never had much of an opinion about Bob, but I’ve disliked Tom for his smugness for decades, so I get it there.

I have an Instragram account. I have posted there twice. Once in 2015, and once a few weeks ago because a RLF (Real Life Friend) told me she has an account, and it reminded me.

    • J, I imagine that everyone has someone they see on the screen that bugs the heck out of them. I’ve never met Bob, so I’m probably not giving him a fair chance. But I dunno…

IG is difficult to warm up to. I like it, I guess– but I can see how you could forget about it. The next time you get on it [in 2021?] feel free to follow me… if I’m still there.

  24. Wait. Bob Costas is not hosting the NBC coverage of the Winter Olympics this year? I haven’t been watching partly because I thought he would be. Actually, I’ve found that it has been a relief not to watch the Olympics this year. I’m watching less and less sports because I cannot stand the endless chatter. Turning off the sound is not a solution either since I do want to hear the sounds of sport- be it skis, skates, snowboard, etc, people, music- everything but the over chatty announcers. So much noise pollution in televised sports these days.

    • Colleen, I agree about the endless chatter that surrounds TV sports anymore. The announcers seem to behave as if they’re as much of the event as the sport itself. That’s why BC drove me crazy, no matter what sport he’d chatter about. I don’t watch many sports on TV so I’ve never tried turning off the sound. Seems like a good idea. Sorry it doesn’t work.

  25. I have to say that my eyes were a hot mess and I couldn’t focus at any distance until I did two things. I first got computer glasses and that helped a lot for the first half of the day. Then things went downhill. Then I began taking Lutein as a supplement and I have been seeing well all day for quite a while. There are things you can do as your eyes age to support them. Just something to keep in mind as you get older.

    • Thanks for the advice. I do ok right now with some prescription eye drops, but if genetics plays out I’ll need more help as I go along. Nothing to worry about, just something to be aware of.

  26. I like Instagram – simple and not as much fake news. I watch the Olympics, the new guy is good, but I can’t figure out who thought an hour (7-8 ET) of those three just talking about skating was going to hold anyone’s interest. I watch most of it with the mute button on because there must be a commercial every 3 minutes. It seems that something that is pure in nature/sports has become very scripted and plotted out in order to meet the needs of the advertisers.

    • Judy, you’re right about how scripted the Olympics have become. I adore the mute button on all electronic devices, so the TV remote is no different. I feel no need to watch commercials, and would prefer to just see the sporting events on the screen, one after the other, until they were all over. Kind of a 24/7 Olympics channel, free from gibber gabber. Like my idea will ever happen…

  27. So, I got an IG account at the encouragement of family. Then I barely used it. I started back up on it just last week at the encouragement of a blogger I follow. I spent two minutes on it, and I haven’t been back. From a business standpoint, I think it could be a great place to meet people and make connections, but if it means posting there several times a day … I just don’t see how I can make it happen. I can barely keep up with blogging–and that’s my absolute favorite platform to hang out of all of them.

Take that as my confession. 🙂

    • Kate, I’m trying to want to be on IG. I gave myself a goal of 3 pics per week so I’d feel like I had a purpose there. I don’t know how you’d use IG for business connections, but no doubt there’s a way. I think that you’re right about how you have to be there multiple times per day to make any impact. Like you, blogs appeal to me, so I try to put my energy into that platform.

  28. I signed up to Instagram as my daughter posted photos of her work on there. since then, I’ve posted a total of 25 pictures, so hardly prolific. It seems to be a favoured forum with many of my fellow NLP trainees – read in to that whatever you may, for I can’t figure it – so I stay to keep in touch with them really.

I started to lose my passion for the Olympics a while back. Even when we hosted it in London, I didn’t watch much. I went to the Paralympic Games so that I got to see the venue (and some amazing wheelchair basketball). Now it’s a park just down the road from my daughter, so I can go anytime. Winter Olympics doesn’t do much for me – never having played winter sports. But I do love Cool Runnings … so now that Jamaica & Nigeria are through, I should find out when & watch 😀

Can’t remember what #3 was and you’ve so many comments, I can’t scroll back that far!

    • deb, I can’t entirely say that I dislike Instagram, but it’s not calling to me in the way that blogs or Twitter do. Maybe if I knew someone in real life who used IG I’d be more in sync with it, but no one favors it so I’m there only as a blogger, a virtual friend.

Since I wrote this post I’ve gotten less interested in the Winter Olympics. There are only so many ways that people can slip and slide across frozen water– and keep me entertained. I’d forgotten about Cool Runnings, but it was a good movie.

I’m amazed by how many comments I got on this post. Who knew that my miscellaneous opinions would inspire people to comment like they have. Or, of course, it might be that everyone is bored, it being Feb, so they’re commenting here just for something to do. 🤔
