A Beautiful Morning That Even Sailors & Shepherds Could Enjoy

Early yesterday morning our sky was a series of spectacular shades of red.

According to the old adage I should have taken warning, but I’m not a sailor or a shepherd so I went outside and photographed the sky.

Our skies here tend to be gray or blue. It’s rare for us to see anything this unique overhead, but I liked it.

It was something free to enjoy and remember– and you can’t get better than that.

  2. Beautiful sunrise! I’m aware of the old adage “Red sky at morning, sailor take warning”, but I’ve not heard one about shepherds.

    Occasionally, we get some lovely pinks at sunrise, but to see the really gorgeous sunrises, I have to be at the lakehouse. Sunsets are lovely there, too, and we get rainbows often.

    • nance, I’ve heard the adage said with either sailors or shepherds. I suppose it all depends on where you live, which one makes sense to you.

  4. if I answered this yesterday it was blue. the sun was out, I had the windows open and we were enjoying temps in the 70sF. Today… not so much it’s gray out and going to rain all day the temps aren’t getting out of the low 50s, but it’s not snow and that is something.

    • teacherturnedmommy, we’re having gray skies and rain today, but NO SNOW. Thus, I’m happy as can be. Maybe tomorrow our weather will be like your Monday. It’s spring, anything can happen.

    • Jill, clear skies sound good to me, too. But considering I can’t do a thing about the weather [except complain and I won’t do that], I’m going to be happy today with gray skies.

  6. Your post is a perfect example of noticing, paying attention. Today I see a clear blue sky and puffy clouds, Oh What a Beautiful Morning! Yesterday it was rainy but the ducks and daisies loved it.

    • marian, you’re right. I hadn’t thought of your point about paying attention– yet there we are! Ducks and daisies would make a lovely blog title. Think of the possibilities…

  9. Gorgeous colors! I always photograph the unusual sunsets when I can. The rare ones here are the purple and red as well. Now and again we get a true golden hour and while those are marvelous, I can’t capture them like a pro.
    When we lived in Georgia, we had a lot more pink sunsets. Frequently tinged with some orange or purple, but very often pink. We called them girly sunsets. Hardly see any of those here.
    We’ve had gray days since Saturday.

    • joey, your sunsets sound pretty. Purple and red would be amazing. Because of all the hills and trees here I only see partial sunsets in the winter, but sometimes they’re orangish. Never pink, like your girly sunsets– a description I adore. It’s gray here today, too. With rain.

  10. We are lucky to get sunrises like this, and if you are in just the right place driving east as I do to care for the grandaughters this sight is the backdrop for our spectacular Mt. Rainier. Google Mt Rainier sunrise–there are some lovely pictures!

    • Deb, I’ll look that up straightaway. From your description it sounds like you have some wonderful early morning drives. No mountains here, but we do have hills… which just don’t photograph the same as a mountain.

  12. Isn’t it funny that we have been conditioned to accept bad weather when it doesn’t include snow. Mother Nature has trained us. As for sunrises, I don’t see many of them. Usually I’m doing something but I do see the sunsets. Sometimes spectacular and sometimes MEH. I’ll take whatever though (as long as it doesn’t snow).

    • Kate, excellent point. You’re right, Mother Nature has trained us to accept certain types of bad weather. I don’t see many sunsets [too many trees], but sunrises I occasionally catch in all their beauty. Or color, as the case may be.

    • Janis, I like to be up early, BUT I like not having anywhere to go to until later in the morning. Z-D is up and out the door by 6:15 or so, but I just mosey around until I need to leave. We don’t see too many sunsets here because the trees and hills get in the way. I hope that your sky turned a lovely shade of blue yesterday– and today, too.

  17. Seriously gorgeous peeks at your sky Ally! It’s overcast with hints of blue here today, but Spring is about to wake up and show herself I can just tell. She’s done a spectacular job of oversleeping, but it’s time to get on the job NOW.

    • Deborah, this has been the slowest trudge into spring that I can remember. We have no snow now, and it’s green outside, but it’s not warm enough yet for me to believe it is spring.

  18. Our sunrises are usually pretty bland, nothing extraordinary like these photos, but I’m happy just to see another day 🙂

    It’s gray out there today. Rain is coming and the wind has a definite chill to it. There will be no blazing sunsets for us tonight – of that I can be sure.

    • Joanne, once in a while we get a sunrise like this one, but ours are usually predictable. It’s gray here today, too. Not depressing gray, but a shade that suggests blah. Which is how I feel… waiting for spring to really arrive.

  19. You took some great pictures there Ally! I’ve heard the red sky at night/morning saying but don’t know that it always comes true. We have blue sky with some clouds here today. Not rain clouds, just puffy white ones.

  25. I’ve been enjoying the pretty sky of late, now that we have moved firmly from winter to spring. Even the gray skies in springtime don’t have the same ominous tinge as those in winter. Your pics are lovely!

    • Kate, that’s a good point. Winter gray skies have a different vibe than spring gray skies. However, I’m looking forward to spring blue skies any day now. That’d be ok by me.

    • camparigirl, I’ve been to San Diego a few times, but don’t remember the sunsets. Odd, isn’t it? Now if I get back that way I’m going to remember your description of the sunsets and make sure to see at least one.

  31. Oh am I glad you heeded no warnings and took those photos – they’re gorgeous. And capturing those sunset tones is a hard ask, so great job too.

    My sky? The real world sky in my neck of the woods tends towards turquoise and a rosy pink. It’s very pretty indeed. I’ve noticed when we head nearer the coast, the colours are bolder – more orange and bright blue. I love the contrast.

    As for metaphorically speaking, I’d say it’s a pretty colour too. Other than getting older, crumblier and with cronky knees, I’m pretty darn content.

  33. Skies are mostly blue around here. I love your pictures, so pretty. Sometimes we get a nice sunrise or sunset, but usually those are because of pollution or fires or something. But sometimes just a regular beautiful one, and I really enjoy those if I’m lucky enough to be outside appreciating it.

    • J, I like the days when we have blue skies, and even the days with gray skies, too. I wouldn’t enjoy seeing a pretty sky knowing that a fire or pollution caused it to happen, but a regular beautiful one would make me happy.

  34. Ally, speaking for myself, I’m glad you took the risk and went outside and took the photos. Trust weather forecasters who spend most of their time out and sea or herding sheep? Ha! Why I’d even be willing to bet that some of them have never heard of a licensed metrologist, much less have studied to be one. 😀

    In my corner of the world is usually blue skies this time of year. Cloudy skies coming in a couple of months. We get about six months of each.

  38. I usually only see skies with that much red in them around the new year. Not sure if there’s a reason for that, or it’s just the fact that sunrise is just after I get off work at that time of the year and that’s the only place I get a good view of the sky. But your red skies are pretty, and I’ve never quite understood the old sailor’s adage unless weather typically moves in from the east out on the open water…

    • evilsquirrel13, we sometimes get what I call the orange smudge in our winter sunsets, but red skies of this intensity in the morning are unusual. I don’t know the logic behind the old adage, but the saying, when said with the word “shepherd” in it, is from the Bible, I think.

    • Pistachios, I’d love to see an orange sunset. Sometimes in the winter when there’re no leaves on the trees, we see part of a sunset that I refer to as the orange smudge. Nothing fiery about it, though– just kind of mellow.

    • Judy, our morning is looking like we’re going to have a perfect spring day with clear blue sky and sunshine. I hope so because I’ve got seeds started inside and I want to get the herbs into outdoor pots. 🤞
