A bit of humor just in time for your holiday grocery shopping…
Imagine you’re a little girl about 7 years old.
It’s Sunday noon after church so you have on your best clothes: dress, tights, Mary Janes. Your hair is pulled into two pigtails, one of which is higher than the other, and there are bows on your pigtails because… PRETTY.
You and your dad are shopping in Kroger, the new one with the huge 2-story foyer that has dramatic lights and large windows– and amazing acoustics.
As you leave the store, going through the foyer to the parking lot, you’re standing on the back of the wheeled metal shopping cart, being pushed along by your dad.
You have energy.
In spades.
Thus when you and your dad set foot in the foyer on your way to the parking lot you ask him: Now?
With a sheepish look on his face, as he glances at all the other adults in the foyer, he says: Yes.
At which time you, a wiggly little human being, start singing LOUDLY with gusto and joy. Which one of the following five songs did you sing?

Because of the acoustics…Pentatonix would be the logical choice. But my fingers are crossed for Christmas Hippo.

rivergirl1211, your logic is sound but those aren’t the songs the little girl sang. I love that hippo song, too. If you watch the video to the end you can see Gayla Peevey sing the song now, as an adult.

Damn. Now I’ll be singing Xmas Hippo in my head all day for nothing….

Your sympathy humbles me.
Maybe I should direct you over to a friends site, she posted “Funkier Than A Mosquito’s Tweeter” by Ike and Tina Turner this morning. Talk about an ear worm!

Oh man! Thanks but no thanks.

I do hope it was the Hippo song… because while I generally loathe Christmas music, that was one of the favorites I used to hear a lot at Mecca… along with another fave, Dominick the Donkey. And as long as she didn’t sound like one of the Chipmunks, I might let the sudden outburst pass…

evilsquirrel13, I’m sorry to tell you it wasn’t the HIppo song, but I, too, am glad that she didn’t launch into the Chipmunk song. Too early in the season for that ear worm.

I’d sing along with Lady Gaga, of course . . . because I’m so much like her!
(Cool post, Lady Ally!)

marian, Lady Ally has a nice ring to it. Thank you. However, it wasn’t the Lady Gaga song.

And need I mention I’m NOT the least bit like Lady Gaga!

I vote for the Hippo song, because it’s just such a fun word to say. But it if it was 7-year-old me, I would have chosen Mozart as I was a teeny music person as well. I love that Mary Did You Know song, but that doesn’t lend it self to belting, I find. Not enough dramatic hand motions available for that either.
Hey, what color are the bows in my hair? THIS MATTERS.

Tara, the bows in your hair were blue to go with your dress. And congratulations, you are correct about the song this little girl sang. She belted out Mozart. 😊

That’s AWESOME! Well, all of it is, but Mozart. Way cool, kid.

My bet is on Rudolf the red nosed reindeer. A fun, easy song for kids to sing. I love Pentatonix and have already been listening to their Christmas music. Oh to be a kid again!

Beth, no she didn’t sing Rudolph, but a good guess. Christmas music already? My aren’t you the one!

I’d go with Stefani and Tony. The acoustics would be brilliant!!

Donna, no she didn’t sing ‘It Don’t Mean A Thing, If It Ain’t Got That Swing’ but she had the moves to go with it!

If it were Little Nance, she’d have sung the Do You Know What I Know song. But I’m guessing Gaga for this kid.
(Devilishly hard to escape any Xmas music for those of us who would like to have Tgiving first, thank you very much!)

nance, Lady Gaga and Tony are wonderful together, but that’s not what this little girl was singing.

Rudolph! Geez I wish I had the courage to attempt something like that because of course FUN!!!

Deb, I know! Her father, who knew what was coming, looked resigned to his fate, knowing her joyful music was going turn all eyes on them. It wasn’t Rudolph.

I never would have attempted it, but if I had it would have been Rudolph. These days it would be Grandma got run over by a Reindeer. 🙂

Judy, while I’m laughing about your choice of Christmas music as an adult, I’m sorry to tell you that this little girl didn’t sing Rudolph.

Rudolph! It’s an easy one. Lyrics aren’t my thing, so I need easy.

Tara guessed it so now I’ll tell you. The little girl was singing Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik! So unexpected and cute.

How do you sing it? There are not words or are there?

She used syllables like this: DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DEE… and kept that up, creating her own “words” as she went.

I’m a winner!!!

I’d so love to see a pigtailed seven year old belt out Eine Kleine Nacht. What syllables would she use, I wonder? Thanks too for posting the Hippo song. That really brought me back. And loved seeing her as a Gramma. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Janet, this little girl sang Mozart using DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DEE… and kept singing syllables that started with the letter “D” to use for the rest of the tune. It was hilarious and she was perfectly on key.

“Rudolph.” Most of those others weren’t widely known or even around when I was a kid. And my mom (who took us shopping, not Pop) would join in, even add a bawdy lyric or two. Who had the red face then?

Melanie, Rudolph is a good choice. I’d have sung that song at that age, but this little girl wasn’t singing that song. Bawdy lyrics for Rudolph?! My goodness, what a sheltered life I lived.

L. Marie, I wish that I could tell you that the little girl sang Rudolph, but she didn’t. Instead she sang… Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik! And she did it well.

Well, I’d be cheating if I said “Mozart!” because I saw the responses as I scrolled down. How did she belt out non-lyrics?? What a delight!!

Kate, she sang the tune using syllables that started with the letter “D” like this: DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DEE… and kept making up “words” as she went. It was funny and cute– and smart.

Out of all these, I like the Mozart best, but I have never heard words to Eine Kleine Nachtmusik — but now my family and I are enjoying it, because it doesn’t really need lyrics….
Not heard the hippo tune in ages, and my younger two don’t even know it…
I’m guessing she went with Rudolph, but honestly, would be cute no matter what. For a limited time.

joey, the little girl sang the Mozart song using “words” that started with the letter “D” on all her syllables as such: DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DEE….. It was delightful. I love the hippo song, too. HOWEVER that’s not what she sang. Of course, now I am singing it, so there you go!

Laura, I’m kind of sorry that the little girl didn’t sing the hippo song. It’d have been Christmas perfection, but her rendition of Mozart, complete with her hips swaying side-to-side, was delightful.

I’m purposely not reading the other guesses, in case you answer them. I’m saying “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” And I love the way you portray this scene. It’s ….. a wonderful life, isn’t it?

Pam, yes it is a wonderful life. At least by my reckoning.
The little girl didn’t sing Rudolph, although that’s been the most popular guess. For obvious reasons.
The little girl sang Mozart! She sang each note using “words” that started with the letter “D” like this: DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DEE….. It was clever and cute.
