Unexpected Entertainment: A Tale Of Grocery Shopping, One Little Girl, & Live Music

A bit of humor just in time for your holiday grocery shopping…

Imagine you’re a little girl about 7 years old.

It’s Sunday noon after church so you have on your best clothes: dress, tights, Mary Janes.  Your hair is pulled into two pigtails, one of which is higher than the other, and there are bows on your pigtails because… PRETTY.

You and your dad are shopping in Kroger, the new one with the huge 2-story foyer that has dramatic lights and large windows– and amazing acoustics.

As you leave the store, going through the foyer to the parking lot, you’re standing on the back of the wheeled metal shopping cart, being pushed along by your dad.

You have energy.

In spades.

Thus when you and your dad set foot in the foyer on your way to the parking lot you ask him: Now?

With a sheepish look on his face, as he glances at all the other adults in the foyer, he says: Yes.

At which time you, a wiggly little human being, start singing LOUDLY with gusto and joy.  Which one of the following five  songs did you sing?

  2. I do hope it was the Hippo song… because while I generally loathe Christmas music, that was one of the favorites I used to hear a lot at Mecca… along with another fave, Dominick the Donkey. And as long as she didn’t sound like one of the Chipmunks, I might let the sudden outburst pass…

    • evilsquirrel13, I’m sorry to tell you it wasn’t the HIppo song, but I, too, am glad that she didn’t launch into the Chipmunk song. Too early in the season for that ear worm.

  5. I vote for the Hippo song, because it’s just such a fun word to say. But it if it was 7-year-old me, I would have chosen Mozart as I was a teeny music person as well. I love that Mary Did You Know song, but that doesn’t lend it self to belting, I find. Not enough dramatic hand motions available for that either.

  6. My bet is on Rudolf the red nosed reindeer. A fun, easy song for kids to sing. I love Pentatonix and have already been listening to their Christmas music. Oh to be a kid again!

  8. If it were Little Nance, she’d have sung the Do You Know What I Know song. But I’m guessing Gaga for this kid.

    (Devilishly hard to escape any Xmas music for those of us who would like to have Tgiving first, thank you very much!)

  14. I’d so love to see a pigtailed seven year old belt out Eine Kleine Nacht. What syllables would she use, I wonder? Thanks too for posting the Hippo song. That really brought me back. And loved seeing her as a Gramma. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

    • Janet, this little girl sang Mozart using DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DEE… and kept singing syllables that started with the letter “D” to use for the rest of the tune. It was hilarious and she was perfectly on key.

    • Melanie, Rudolph is a good choice. I’d have sung that song at that age, but this little girl wasn’t singing that song. Bawdy lyrics for Rudolph?! My goodness, what a sheltered life I lived.

    • L. Marie, I wish that I could tell you that the little girl sang Rudolph, but she didn’t. Instead she sang… Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik! And she did it well.

    • Kate, she sang the tune using syllables that started with the letter “D” like this: DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DO Dah DEE… and kept making up “words” as she went. It was funny and cute– and smart.

  21. Out of all these, I like the Mozart best, but I have never heard words to Eine Kleine Nachtmusik — but now my family and I are enjoying it, because it doesn’t really need lyrics….
    Not heard the hippo tune in ages, and my younger two don’t even know it…
    I’m guessing she went with Rudolph, but honestly, would be cute no matter what. For a limited time.

    • Laura, I’m kind of sorry that the little girl didn’t sing the hippo song. It’d have been Christmas perfection, but her rendition of Mozart, complete with her hips swaying side-to-side, was delightful.

  26. After a long blog reading (and writing) break, I love coming back and seeing what you’ve posted! I read in the comments that hippo Christmas wasn’t the song (bummer!!) which would have been my favorite but I *do* love that it was the Mozart.
