Three Thoughts Thursday | Doing. Listening. Watching. + A Postscript

This is that thing, my gentle readers, when I tell you stuff and don’t make a story of it. Here we go.

• • •

ONE

I think that Creating My Dragon Name by following the how-to from pine.and.birch is the most perfectly silly thing I’ve done this month.

I am: Ylla the Tired, Hoarder of Toast and Potted Ferns.

To figure out your dragon name do this: it’s { your first name spelled backward } the { how you’re feeling now } hoarder of { the last thing you ate } and { an object to the right of where you’re sitting }.  That’s it, easy peasy mac and cheesy.

TWO

I think that Happy Face, a podcast, is worth listening to and will chill you to your bones.

It’s the story of serial killer Keith Jesperson, known as the Happy Face killer, told by his daughter, Melissa Moore.  She’s an adult now, but as a child she lived with/had contact with her father– while he was on his killing spree.  Her examination of what was going on then and its impact on her now is fascinating.

And horrifying.

THREE

I think that The Good Cop is quietly hilarious, but will admit that there’s not much to it.

It’s a light TV comedy that’s reminiscent of [but nowhere near as wonderful as] Monk or Psych.  The plots aren’t complex, but honestly, the chemistry between Tony Danza as the ex-con father and Josh Groban as the perfectionist cop, well– those two are a hoot to watch together.  Plus the supporting cast is great.

Questions of the Day

What’s your dragon name? Listen to any good podcasts lately? Do you admit to watching brain candy TV shows?

• • •

P.S.  This will be my last blog post of 2018.  It’s been a heck of a weird year;  if you ask me, it’s one that has gone too long.  I’m sick of it.

Soooo I’m going to take a short blogging break by ending 2018 early and starting next year late, which is to say I’ll be back here sometime in mid-January 2019.  Until then, my gentle readers…

Be safe. Be happy. Be. 🐝

    • Judy, I’ll never judge someone for watching brain candy TV. If Lethal Weapon, that I didn’t know was a TV show, is your thing, then enjoy. Yep, I’m over 2018. Ready for a new year…

  1. Finish out the holiday season in style Ally Bean and have a lovely break!
I’m not a podcast person and my TV watching runs typically to drama type things, although I will admit to getting hooked on the new version of Sabrina on Netflix. Now all dark and creepy (not Sabrina) but the concept itself.
How about this for a name: Bed the congested, hoarder of shrimp and painters tape… ????

    • Deb, your dragon name rocks! I stand in awe of you, Bed the congested, hoarder of shrimp and painters tape.

I’m not familiar with this. Are you talking about Sabrina, a teenage witch? With a new darker concept? And if so, is there still Salem the cat? I loved his snark.

  2. Enjoy your break. I’ll miss you, but I get it.
I watch a ton of Brain Candy TV–currently watching The Office on Netflix. Smart and funny–good writing, especially in the early episodes.

    • nance, I’m ready for a little time away from the blogosphere. I love it, but do have a real life out here in the real world, you know! I’d forgotten about The Office. I only saw a few episodes when it was on and liked them. Thanks for the idea.

  3. Enjoy your blogging break, Ally. I’ll be taking mine after the solstice. Your announcement is tempting me to just up and start right now instead…but I shall persevere until the 21st HA!
My dragon name came out a bit sluggish sounding, so am gonna pass on the share, but it was a fun excuse to doodle around before getting on with my day!
    Take care.

    • laura, I was going to wait until next week to bug out, but I’m tired now so off I go. I’m glad you tried to create your own dragon name. Sometimes we all need a bit of silliness in our lives, I do believe.

  4. I will miss you! Your posts are short and pithy (I love that word!). They always makes me smile (and I often learn stuff). Enjoy your break. I have been sorely disappointed in the TV “Christmas” shows. With the exception of NCIS, most have been dark and violent. I like upbeat and happy as a way to go on hiatus until January. That’s exactly what you did!

    • Kate, thank you for the compliment about my blog. My average word count here is only 307, which makes me think I’ve nailed the “short” concept.

I haven’t seen any Christmas episodes on TV shows this season but am not surprised that they’re dark and violent. That seems to be passing as entertainment these days. *meh*

  5. I’m pleased to say I’m Adnil the peaceful hoarder of pork and dust. I hope I wear the name well.
I listened to a podcast by a fellow blogger last month about his story writing. Very fun.
I don’t have a working TV, but I have Netflix. The only show I watch is The Great British Baking Show. Talk about brain candy! Okay, maybe it wouldn’t qualify as such. But it’s so soothing to watch.

    • L. Marie, so nice to meet you, Adnil the peaceful hoarder of pork and dust! Making dragon names is silly harmless fun, if you ask me.

I haven’t seen all of The Great British Baking Shows, but the ones I have seen I enjoyed. The competition is fierce, but polite. And the results put my baking attempts to shame. I need to watch more of those shows.

    • Ned-Nez, the content hoarder of cookies and Kleenex boxes, I like your name, but I do agree that it might not be the most fierce dragon name out there. But it suits you, so there you go!

  6. Thank you, Iluj the Frazzled, Hoarder of Oatmeal and Dirty Socks for sharing your name with us. I’ll be back next month and I’m sure you’ll survive, even thrive, while I’m away. Happy Holidays to you!

  7. Have a wonderful blog break–hoping for a better 2019! 2018 has been a definite mix of joy and sadness for me with lots of adjustments to new situations. Exhausting and emotional. I watch a lot of mysteries, especially Brit ones. They are absorbing, my own type of mind candy. 🙂

    • Margaret, I’ve found 2018 to be exhausting. People have been difficult and projects have been impossibly long. Next year I want better. [Got that Universe?]

Do you watch your British mysteries on Acorn TV? I’m curious about that streaming service.

  8. I would be Lorac the peaceful, hoarder of rice and beans and coffee. Not terribly intimidating, am I? No podcast to contribute – I always intend to listen but rarely actually do. Brain candy TV shows – maybe HGTV shows? When my brain is feeling really lazy, that’s where I go. Otherwise I mostly stream from Netflix or Amazon. Enjoy your vacation – and we can hope 2019 will be less weird, but I am doubtful.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yes with a name like Lorac the peaceful, hoarder of rice and beans and coffee you’re not going to be scaring anyone. Although it’s a lovely name, I must admit.

I listen to a few podcasts, but like you think I’m going to listen to more of them than I do. We have Netflix and Hulu so that’s where I usually go for my brain candy TV fix. HGTV reminds me of doctors’ waiting rooms because that’s what seems to be on in them– thankfully though, not Fox News. 🙄

    • nancy, yes, you’ve figured out my ulterior motive for taking a little time off. I’m behind in my hoarding! 🙄

And let me say that I do like your dragon name, Ycnan, the contented hoarder of soup and rocking chairs. It’s so… warm and home-y.

  9. I watch some mildly funny shows that I’m always kind of baffled I enjoy, but then I realize that they’re giving me a much needed break. Thanks for reminding me about that show. I’m going to check it out.

Happy holidays, Ally! I hope you have a wonderful rest of December and a happy new year.

    • Akilah, I find that I like some brain candy TV shows that allow me to just be. Many TV shows have complicated plot lines + complex characters and that’s good, but occasionally just vegging in front of the TV works for me. And trust me, if you want to veg, leafing through a magazine or playing a game on your phone while watching a TV show, The Good Cop is for you!

Happy Holidays to you, too. Thanks for stopping by to comment.

  10. I’m sorry you’ve had a rough year. And am therefore happy for you that it’s almost over. That podcast does sound fascinating, but also frightening. I’m afraid to listen. Why was he called the Happy Face killer? I’d never heard of him.
I too love Monk and Psych. May need to check out The Good Cop.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Betsy, I didn’t know anything about this serial killer until I stumbled upon this podcast. He was called the Happy Face killer because he taunted the police with letters in which he drew a happy face.

The podcast focuses on his daughter trying to understand who she is today. There are interviews with people from her past, newspaper reporters, the police, and occasionally with him from prison. He fooled people, murdered women, and still tries to psychologically torment his daughter today. The podcast is like nothing I’ve ever heard before.

The Good Cop, on the other hand, is pure brain candy. Very light.

  11. OK. You got me to play. I’m Hteb the exhausted, Hoarder of Chex Mix and stuffed mice!
I don’t watch pod casts, and I only have time to record some TV shows, one of my favorites, “The Good Doctor.”
I so enjoy, like others, reading your cool blogs. They get me to thinking about this crazy world we are all a part of. And they make me laugh!
    Have a wonderful break.

    • Hello Hteb the exhausted, Hoarder of Chex Mix and stuffed mice! Thanks for adding to the silliness. Stuffed mice? Toys not taxidermy, right?

I’ve seen commercials for The Good Doctor. I liked The Good Wife and I like The Good Cop, so I need to considering watching The Good Doctor, eh?

I’m happy to know you enjoy this blog. You’ve been reading here for years now. Thank you. This blog has taken on a life of its own along the way. 🤔

Enjoy your break. Next week’s post will be my grand finale for this year with plans to return in mid-January.

We WILL enjoy our breaks, Ally Bean. 🙂

  13. Tenaj the queasy, hoarder of the tuna melt, fries and pen caddy will miss you but hope that you have wonderful holidays with your hubby and family. (The tuna melt and fries might be the cause of the queasy I’m afraid. Serves me right for not getting a salad!) Not a real listener of podcasts I must admit. Have not seen Good Cop, but then again I don’t watch much TV either. Give me music and my craft room and that’s my heaven. Come back rested and refreshed, just make sure to come back, okay?

    • Tenaj the queasy, hoarder of the tuna melt, fries and pen caddy, I am pleased to make your acquaintance. I’m sorry that your meal made you feel queasy, but it happens. You feel better now?

I’m going to miss “chatting” with all my bloggy friends, but I am unusually tired this December and feel like being a holiday hermit. So I shall do that. 😐

I had a GREAT 2018. It’s been a wonderful feel-good year for me and I’m (hopefully) looking forward to much more of this awesomeness in 2019!

I was wondering when the annual break would come. Have a great one and I’ll see you on the flip side of the calendar…

    • evilsquirrel13, to paraphrase a line from Legally Blonde: “The rules of dragon naming are simple and finite.” Therefore, I’m not going to refer to you by your inaccurate dragon name. HA!

Yes, I’m out of here. This time of year wears me down and that makes me less wordy than usual. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, ok? Later, ‘gator.

  18. I’ve always wanted a dragon name. I am Imoan the fidgety, hoarder of cinnamon buns and skulls. Thanks for the podcast rec that sounds creepy and interesting and right up my alley. I just started listening to a podcast called UnErased, about the history of gay conversion therapy in America. It’s thought-provoking and insightful and heart-breaking and I’d definitely recommend it. Enjoy your break, and looking forward to seeing you again in the new year!

I’ve not heard of UnErased, but it sounds like something I’d enjoy listening to. Thanks for mentioning it. There are so many great podcasts out there, but not enough time to listen to them all.

It is a busy time of year and so hot where I live, so I will bunk down in air con and binge watch some hill out brain candy Nordic Noir (Scandinavian crime fiction) and Radio podcasts. I hope your festive break is restorative and relaxing!

I’ve never watched any Nordic Noir, but I’ve read some reviews of various TV shows and novels. It all sounds like it has dark and intricately woven plotlines. Very cool.

Weather here is in the 40s F and wet, wet, wet. Not the most festive looking outside, but inside all is jolly and bright! Thanks for stopping by to say “hi!”

  22. Happy Holidays, says I (otherwise known as Map the Contented, Hoarder of Cookies and Doodles). Each year I dread December, knowing how crazy it will be with shopping and baking and grandkids’ chorus events and girlfriend lunches and decorating the tree and listening to Christmas music and ….. wait a minute. Did I just call myself content? Yes, I’m realizing that all this craziness in December is actually rather special. Particularly 12/26, when I collapse with a good book in front of the fire. That’s what I wish for you – contentment and a good book. Til 2019. xo
