The One About My New Computer & A Snarky Thought For The Day

This is a test.

I shall be writing this post, more or less, stream of consciousness-style as I attempt to figure out my new computer. Her name is Keyzia and she is an iMac.

She replaces Cora, my constant computer companion for the last 8 years. Cora is currently in semi-retirement in the dining room where I can access her as necessary whilst she gets the break she deserves.

Not to tell any tales out of school but Cora was getting a little forgetful, turning herself off willy nilly. Not starting up in the morning without prompting from moi. It was time for her to retire.

Keyzia is named for the fact that I now have a wireless keyboard so her name is sort of a heavy-handed joke on many levels. Plus I like the name, spelled many different ways, but always going back to what Biblical Baby Name explains thusly [link here]:

“Kezia was the second of the three daughters of Job, born after his restoration to Grace, health and prosperity. She was reputed to be among the most beautiful women in the land.”

And so with this short, yet sincere, introduction to Keyzia– and having now seen how this keyboard/screen and WP editor dance together doing a wordy do-se-do, I’m ready to add an image to this post.

Albeit this image has virtually nothing to do with anything here, but like I said this is a test post and this is an image I happen to have available so deal with it, kids.

Besides, it’s the truth, now isn’t it?

WP system: 1) didn’t give me the option of using its editing function, the post just went through without any checking; & 2) forced me to use scheduling function to post this, just couldn’t hit publish now. iMac system: 1) doesn’t give me any slidey thingies on screen that let me float up and down the page I’m working on; & 2) allows me to sit back in my chair to type on new fancy keypad that is wireless.

  3. I’ve been happy as a clam with my lovely Windows system. Comes a note from those people saying, “Pffft! We’re not going to support your operating system any more. Either install a new system or (best of all) buy a new computer. Deal with it.”

    Fat chance, Buddy. I’m going to keep right on going, albeit with constant, multiple backups and a refusal to click any link that might take me to one of “those” sites. The new computer with Windows 10 will come, but not until they get the bugs out of that one!

    • shoreacres, I hear ‘ya. My previous computer was an old iMac that got to a point where the new operating systems wouldn’t work on her, like your Windows prob. Life was getting too complicated for me as I tried to overcome her shortcomings, so I took the leap and got a new iMac. I’m not a techie person and I do rather resent being forced to buy a new machine, but sometimes practicality rules the scene. 😐

    • Jill, Cora was an iMac so the learning curve here is going to be small. I never could figure out Windows so when I got my first Apple computer 15 years ago I never went back to Windows. Still this new machine, Keyzia, is much snazzier than Cora and goes much faster.

  5. ‘Gratz on the new computer. I keep hoping to get a seat/chair/whatever that allows me to use the “big” computer. That would help a great deal with the vague goal of blogging again. But, forgive me, the way this year has been going, the next time I turn it on it will blow up.

    • Zazzy, thank you. I don’t like to spend money on techie things, but Cora has been having issues for the last year or so. Keyzia is so fast and has such a clear screen. This is all new to me, but I’m sure I’ll get to like it toot sweet.

      The image is a saying that I read somewhere and it made me laugh. There’s a truth there that cannot be denied, what it is in reference to is up to you! 🤔

  7. Congrats on your new baby! I love every Mac I have ever owned. I like the feel of the keyboard and everything about it. It’s a treat to write blog posts on it! I have never named them, perhaps I should start. Your quote makes me think of one person in particular but I won’t say who.

    • pam, I agree with you that the keyboard on this machine is a delight. Part of that is the feel of it, part is that I can lean back and sit up straight while typing. I like that.

      The quote made me smile and seemed ever so poignant today… for whatever reason.

    As for the biblical reference – I am amused to note my response to the declaration that Keyzia’s namesake was the most beautiful if the land. I was immediately transported to my adolescence when I was jealous of anyone who was pronounced beautiful. And it seems I haven’t let go of that wee bit of ego-driven nonsense to this very day when I feel compelled to remark, “Huh. Even then the writers used beauty as a sign of worthiness.”

    • Maggie, thank you. I don’t often get a new techie gadget so this is a big deal for me.

      I like how you can still be triggered by “beautiful” even though your logical mind knows it’s just an adjective. What happens to us in adolescence stays with us more than we usually want to admit. I get what you’re saying and why you’re saying it.

  12. How fun to have a new gadget. I’ve never named my computers (or my key boards for that matter) and will be wondering all day what names would suit them. Thank you!! But Keyzia would make a great dog’s name. Or Himalayan cat.

    • Janet, I’ve always named my Apple desktop computers. First there was Viva de la Vega, then Cora, and now Keyzia. They’re all female of course because girlfriend and I need to chat it up with the world! BFFs, we are. 🥰

  15. Ah, the joys of a new ‘puter! They’re always so fast… until we clog them down with necessary stuff. I’ve never had a Mac, though I have an iPhone, iPad and iPod. Guess I’m too used to Windows. Have fun!

  16. An iMac is so impressive looking. I love the name — it sounds regal and I believe will command a great deal of respect and productivity. I use a MacBook Pro or an iPad. I am definitely not a a Windows girl. Wishing you a great partnership, Ally and Keyzia.

    • Maggie, thanks. I hadn’t stopped to think about how this computer looks sitting on the desk, but you’re right. Keyzia is beautiful, like her name means. I don’t get Windows either, so iMac it is for me.

  17. I’ve found that after the initial learning curve, I’ve likes the upgrades. I’m on Windows 10 and like it a lot but I’ve never had a Mac. I stayed with Windows because I used that for work. Congrats on your new friend!

    • Kate, if I had done better with Windows I’m sure I’d use it now, but it never made any sense to me. Fortunately Apple makes some sense to me plus I keep computers for as long as possible so Keyzia, barring any unforeseen problems, and I will be BFFs for a quite a few years.

      • I am hoping to keep mine a long time too. I hate learning curves even if they are easier in the long run. My keyboard and mouse have been wireless for a long time. I don’t think I could go back to wires! I’ve never named my computer (except for the bad words when it does something stupid!).

    I have one of the last Macbook Pros made while Steve Jobs was still alive. I’d get a new one but heard their keyboards suck! I had considered an iMac since I either look down at my screen or type in an awkward way with my computer on a stand. My neck would thank me!!!

    • susie, I thought about getting a MacBook Pro but read the reviews and saw the same thing that you did about the keyboards. I like this new clear screen and am finding that with a wireless keyboard I am sitting up much straighter.

  19. I dread getting a new computer but mine is getting old too. Looking forward to heard about your experiences with Keyzia. I’ve never named an appliance, computer or car even though I often personify them.

    • Jean, this was a difficult decision for me to make because I dread new computers, too. There is a learning curve, but so far so good. I always name my computers and my cars. I figure we spend so much time together that we need to be on a first name basis. 😊

  20. I don’t know if I have ever even seen a Mac. Best as I can recall, we’ve never sold Apple computers at Mecca, ever. We did have early Apple computers (IIe’s) when I was in grade school (IN fact, right on up through college…. when they were hopelessly out of date). Supposedly, from what I’ve heard, owning a Mac now makes you part of some cult. Congratulations to you and Keyzia on your new membership…

    • Well you know evilsquirrel13 there are these places, called Apple stores, wherein a person such as yourself can see and type on an iMac. It’s a brave new computer world out there should you want to flirt with the idea of experiencing life in a cult!

  21. I would be extremely impressed if Keyzia could take her own photo and post it on the blog. If not, then to be really honest Ally Bean, while I am sure she is wonderful, she is not a simple, down-to-earth, nothin’ fancy to see here Chromebook, which will always be my choice 😉
    Something I find interesting is how we humans develop our brand loyalty and will fight to the death if/when there may be a need to change.
    As to that turning themselves off issue… my old gal has been doing that more and more. I suspect Chromey here will be on her way out before long.

    • Deb, if I’d had better experiences early on with Windows I’m sure I’d still be using a machine that runs it, but I never understood Windows for whatever reasons. After we got our first iMac the angels sang and I could use a computer more easily. That being said, it makes no difference to me which operating system anyone uses when doing his or her computer thing, but I know what you mean about the fanatics who take offense when you use what they don’t like. As if it is all that matters in the whole scheme of things… 🙄

    I’m an i fan all the way until the laptop/desktop stage and then I’m Windows all the way. Mostly it’s as I have to use it for my day job and the technical support guys gave me *that* look when I said I was thinking of going the Mac route. I recently had a bad 5 years with multiple laptops frying on me – all good brands, no cheap rubbish – so decided to go desktop. I have to say it’s been an absolute dream, even though I can’t take it with me to the sofa or to bed, as was my wont in my single days. Probably better for me & it provides more time with my Kindle 🙂

    • deb, thanks for your blessing. I’m hoping for a long friendship with Keyzia, too.

      I started using computers with ones that ran Windows but never felt comfortable with them, so Apple it is. I prefer having a desktop computer for home use because I am better able to put limits on my time in front of the screen. I do 90% of my blogging while sitting in the home office in front of a desktop computer [the other 10% is on a contrary laptop] and I find this keeps me sane. I don’t want to always be available to the blogosphere. I love blogging, but I won’t let it consume my life. Boundaries, baby, I got ’em. 😐

      • Boundaries are the best & it’s certainly helped me to break free by having my desktop in my home office rather than the living room. Another positive about the move! I nearly bought an iMac, but Himself talked me out of it (he’s famously anti-Apple sadly). I know the day job technical guys would’ve supported him, but sometimes … I think back and wonder. Especially as it could possibly have saved me from that five years of Windows laptop hell.

  23. He-Man asked me over the weekend how long ago we got my computer… Picture me looking back at him with that deer in the headlights stare. “I don’t know …awhile ago,” I said.

    Yeah, he thinks it’s getting close to me needing a new one. I’m a PC. We started out decades ago on MAC’s but work was PC and being able to connect in from/at home meant switching to PC.
    I’ve been PC since. I get Windows most of the time. He-Man switched back to MAC a year ago and he’s complained about it since. Compatibility issues, needing to purchase support hardware that PC’s just come with are a couple I can think of right now. I’m not switching unless MAC is the last and only computer system out there.

    I hope you and Keyzia have many good years together computing and whatnot. 😃

    • Deborah, I’ve known I needed a new computer for a while, but put it off. My earliest experiences with computers were with Windows and I didn’t get it at all. Once we switched to iMacs I understood computing better, albeit not much at all. I suspect that the computing system you use makes little difference as long as you get your work done using it, so go Windows or Apple whichever makes you happy. I’m grooving on the wireless-ness of this new system right now, so obviously my use of computers is never cutting edge.

  28. I remember my first experience with booting up a Mac. You extract it from its pretty box, plug it in, turn it on, and it greets you with a friendly “hello” ready to go. I bear the scars of my many face-offs with PCs. No, the box is not as pretty, but that’s the least of it, having a less attractive adversary, it’s that adversarial relationship… You turn it on. It won’t connect to one of the monitors. Clearly, right after turning a new PC on, its time to update the divers. But the network connection won’t work. The external keyboard refuses to respond. Frustration galore! Yes, the story of Job is very relevant here (and not because of the beauty of his daughter or any return to grace 😉)

    • Endless Weekend, I wonder how often people switch their computer preferences? Seemingly many commenters here have gone from PC to iMac while many more won’t touch an iMac with a ten foot pole. I like iMacs and have had better success with them than anything Windows related so I’m hoping that Keyzia is a winner. But no matter which kind of computer you get, there will be trials worthy of Job. It’s a fact, Jack.

      • How many times would you be happy to wait on a message along the lines of “100% complete. Don’t turn off your computer” with no eta? After the third time you wait 15+ minutes, even the most ardent win10 update supporter would struggle to enjoy it 🙂 True for Jack and Jill, too 🙂

  30. Congrats on the new iMac! I’ve been crossing fingers that mine holds out a little longer because we can’t quite afford a new one yet. I had to be careful with upgrading to the new Catalina operating system because some of the programs I need for my transcription didn’t work with Mojave and I had to have a friend come over and take me back to High Sierra. Fortunately the software developers upgraded themselves and I did a practice run on my MacBook to see if everything would work and it does so maybe now I can upgrade the desktop. I name my cars (Prince, Bullet, Moonglow) but have never named my computers. I like your names.

    • Janet, Cora would have nothing to do with Mojave which meant that I couldn’t upload pics from my phone. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back about getting a new iMac, but I get your reluctance to buy a new computer. They are pricey. I felt like I needed to get something that worked better and so far so good, *fingers crossed* for a happy future together.

    • Katie, I’ve always named my computers and Keyzia had a certain ring to it. I thought the image was a hoot, too. It also had a certain ring to it. Kind of my theme for the day, I guess.

    • Marty, I rather liked that image and today does seem to be the day to feature it. For many reasons, I suppose.

      I’m thinking that I’m going to like the wireless keyboard. I’m already sitting up straighter in my chair because I don’t have to hover over it. This is cool by me.

  35. Ahhh…there’s nothing like stories of a new mac to make me sigh in contentment (with just a wee bit of jealousy). These things are amazing. My BIL just got an iMac (those are the desktops, right?) and raves about the pixels, especially with his work in photography. I just can’t pull the trigger because there’s no way I could pick one place to write all the time. Maybe someday…

    • Laura, I’m amazed by the screen clarity, too. And being able to lean back while typing is going to be fun. I try to only write/blog when I’m sitting at this desk, so having a desktop computer works for me, but I can understand how if you like to move around this wouldn’t work for you.

When I am finished with my Robb gig, the first new computer will be a Mac for sure, as I am so done with Windows, having sustained big issues from two separate Service Pack updates – one was terminal. So your problem with Cora became more than just the plug issue a few month ago. I had to pull all my computer info onto a flash drive after a Service Pack update in July wiped out a disk – the computer works fine, just can’t remote into work anymore. It is a pain. Sometimes everything is just a pain isn’t it?

    • linda, I often find that I like the idea of computers more than many of the actual details about computers. Yes, Cora no longer accepted operating system updates from Apple so she couldn’t do simple tasks like allowing me to put my iPhone pics into her Photos. Plus it was time to get with it and use a wireless keyboard. I’m hoping to have a long run with Keyzia like I did with Cora.

      • Ally – I switched to a wireless keyboard and put a riser under my laptop in 2018, after my shoulder was “frozen” from sitting in the same position for endless hours. I do like the light touch of the wireless keyboard and feel I type much faster. I have an HP laptop that I bought 10 years ago this month and it runs perfectly fine – it has lost its battery power and two keys years ago. Because I have nowhere in my bedroom to use it with a wireless keyboard, I just punch down on the backspace and return keys harder than normal – I use it with a scanner and for uploading pictures as it has a larger screen. I do not want to part with it, but it is a Windows 7 and loses Microsoft support on 01/14/20.

        • You hit upon the real issue with these older computers. Once the company no longer supports yours then you have to buy a new one or do without, I guess. I put off buying a replacement for Cora for over a year, but decided the time was now before any new price increases– thanks to tariffs or corporate greed.

          • I’ve not used the Windows 10 laptop yet as we’re not totally configured at work – my boss is holding off due to his medical procedure (today) and time away from work and an impending vacation – he did not want angst over a new operating system as well. I fire my Windows 10 laptop up and do updates but am not enthusiastic about using it. Whether that makes me an old fuddy-duddy since I am clinging to Windows 7, I’m not sure, but I am now on this 2009 HP which has not given me one iota of trouble in ten years … I don’t count the key issue because the backspace key flipped off and I watched a tutorial on YouTube to see how to replace it – stupidly I did what they said … remove another key and see how the “hinged apparatus” worked. Not smart as I lost two keys in the process, but everything else is fine. I never untether my laptops anyway, so it’s no big deal that the battery died years ago. I did not buy the Windows 10 and asked the computer guy to order an HP – he said Dell is better. I don’t agree but I am not looking a gift horse in the mouth – I’ll use it for work as well as personal use and hope for the best.

              • Mine was a desktop that crashed – it was bought by my boss while I still worked on site. We actually returned it in the end … it was fraught with issues. First, the monitor made text/images come out concave … we swapped monitors twice then the Service Pack update made it crash totally. We packed it up and sent it back as Geek Squad could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again. We got a note from Windows that they were sorry – it was not even a year old. Have a good day Ally – hope it has warmed up for you – we are expecting snow and I don’t see any yet, but it is glare ice all over.

    • Neil, I wonder about some TV ads, too. I end up asking myself: what were they selling? Myself has no answer.

      The image was a play on words. The original saying is: you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink. This is a more updated, albeit absurd, rewording of that saying.

  40. I’m glad you’re sounding so happy with something so new. New technology can be irritating if it doesn’t work as expected or if you have a hard time getting used to it. I’m not looking forward to the time when I have to retire a faithful friend and learn how to use something new. A new computer is nothing like a new blouse which is always a pleasure wear.

    • nicki, you are so right. I’m doing ok with this new machine so far. I still can’t find a few features, but I’m giving myself plenty of time to figure it out. I agree that a new blouse is instant satisfaction, but new machines don’t reward you instantly– they try your patience first!

    • Eilene, it took me about a year to finally take the plunge and buy a new computer. I hope your story about Kezia was a good one! It is amazing how sometimes information shows up at the right moment.

  44. A new byte in the house – cool.
    This is my second MacBook Pro – the last one was also so old it wasn’t able to take the new updates. While this one isn’t “new”, the recent update did some magic and things are so clear and bright ( and a few things relocated, but not lost, so not too annoying. Updates are tricky here as I have to relocate close to the WIFi connection and hope the signal stays strong for the complete download. Switched to Apple after many years of PC – it was the operating system of business and the most compatible. But after years of maneuvering around touchy / cranky PCs I finally wanted something at home I didn’t;’t want to have to think about. Apple is truly an easy tool, so you don[‘t have to waste time/energy working with quirks or operating systems that have to be updated and eventually become unsupported.

  45. Keyzia is an excellent name. I was wondering about it. I don’t name my computers or cars, although my younger daughter does. Her Ford Focus was Julia and her current Subaru is Rita. It can be stressful to adjust to a new computer but you sound like you’re doing fine!!

  46. Congrats with your new computer – always exciting! Kezia, daughter of Job, my goodness Ally, you are with it today – this is the first time I heard of her! I changed to Apple two years ago, because once over the hurdle of changing in how to use it, it is more reliable and easier access (that’ what it seems to me). Also, big bonus there was the Word program on it, so didn’t have to buy that.

    • Junieper2, I don’t know how I came to know Job’s second daughter’s name, but it stuck with me. I like how Apple computers work so it seemed smart to get another one. I am enjoying my new wireless keyboard so if nothing else I’m pleased with how I can sit back now instead of huddling over a keyboard.

  50. I will only say wonderful things about your new computer, as beautiful as her name. Best of luck – may your relationship be lovely for many years. Me? I have the same desktop for the past 8 years, I whisper sweet nothings in her ears every day. I massage her sides. My guy keeps updating her, and so far, she is rewarding us. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. The laptop we bought 7 years ago, however, for when I travel, has been nothing but trouble from day one. I’d like to place IT in the trash. But IT refuses to die. ;-0 Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

    Ooh, fun! Don’t you love bright and shiny new tech equipment? It looks like your new computer is running well and is in great shape. Still all of this talk about computers not doing well and needing to be replaced, makes me think about what I was going through with mine about this time last year! It was awful and it caused us to not have a proper Thanksgiving. I’m still not over it. So I’m spitting and throwing salt and doing whatever else I can think of to ward off any lingering evil, ghost-in-the-machine spirits that might cause my computer to go out again! The question I have is: are asses born that way or are they molded into who they eventually become? Mona

    • Mona, this is a bright and shiny new ‘puter which may be why I’m so taken with it right now. I’m sorry that your Thanksgiving was ruined last year, but I totally understand how that can happen. I was having issues with Cora early last summer and it almost did me in.

      As for your question, I’ve no answer… but I’d say that regardless of the nature vs nurture influences, we have to deal with them & it’s taking a toll on the rest of us.

  57. Congrats on your new girl! Always fun to get new toys. I still have Windows 7, which I’m told will no longer be supported as of January 2020. What’s a girl to do? I have tried Macs but I can’t figure them out, for some reason. I am too accustomed to PCs I guess. I could upgrade but I hear awful things about Windows 10. I could walk (surf) on the wild side and NOT upgrade . . . wonder how that would go.

    • Kate, my husband uses Windows at work and he sometimes gets baffled by my iMac. I never understood Windows so there you have it. We all lean toward what works for each of us. As for not upgrading… best of luck with that. Might add a new bit of something to your life. 😉
