As September Ends, Learning About The Color Orange + A Colorful Poll Question

I went out the front door to walk down the driveway to the mailbox.  I saw this Monarch butterfly flitting among the zinnias.  When I came back from getting the mail he was still messing around in the flowers.

Realizing I had a photo op I hurried inside, got my camera, rushed out to where the zinnias are thriving, and snapped this photo.  It is a tribute to the color orange: orange flower + predominantly orange butterfly = coolness.

[To be clear, this is a tribute to the natural occurrence of the color orange, not the peculiar shade of make-up worn by our so-called President. That orange is icky and weird. Like him.]

For snorts and giggles I researched the color orange.  Here are five fun facts to know and tell.

√ According to Smithsonian Magazine when it comes to crayons, “Crayola has at least 16 different names for what most of us would call ‘orange.'” [Link HERE]

√ According to Canva’s description of the meaning of the color orange, “it communicates activity and energy and encourages socialization.” [Link HERE]

√ According to Interactive’s description of people with an orange aura, they are: “Overall, thrill-seekers, daredevils, and people who tend to life in the fast lane.” [Link HERE]

√ According to Jewelry Shopping Guide’s description of orange gemstones, they symbolize: “joy, sunshine, warmth, creativity, happiness and a touch of the exotic.” [Link HERE]

√ According to Brides.com’s guide to wedding flowers, there are 19 orange or coral flowers you can use in your wedding palette. [Link HERE]

From this random research I’ve concluded that the butterfly in the photo is the color of the crayon named ‘Mango Tango’;  he is social, an active and energetic thrill seeker who likes sunshine, creatively making himself happy, while visiting a flower not suggested for an orange wedding bouquet.

While investigating the color orange I got thinking about favorite colors.  Everyone has one– or at least I assume they do.  I made this poll question hoping to find out which color is the most loved one among my gentle readers.

Answer the poll question, then chat about orange, or any color, in the comments below.  I’d love to know your favorite color– and why, of course.

  1. I just couldn’t take the poll. I have at least four favorites on the list, and if I chose just one, the others would be insulted. I can say that blue is my least favorite color (except for the sky and water), and I was glad to see white included. I really, really love white flowers — but I don’t think of it as a color.

    • shoreacres, I understand that dilemma. I used the most basic colors on that poll because once you go down the rabbit hole of secondary and tertiary color names… well the poll would be about 50 choices long.

  5. Yellow, and I’m among the three way tie leaders right now. It’s funny though, that I continue to claim yellow as my “favorite” color. I never wear it cause my aging skins looks weird, but I do have yellow around my home and would choose, say a yellow rose, over red any day. I am also drawn to that lighter teal/aqua/seafoam shade. I am however not a pink person in any way, and orange…well it’s just traumatizing right now. Perhaps someday I will like it again.

    • Deb, there’s a cheerfulness implicit in yellow. Or that’s how I think of it. I can understand your love of it, but also not wanting to wear it either. Pink can be a difficult color to enjoy, I’ll give you that– and as for orange… well, it has a somewhat sordid reputation now. Poor dear.

  6. Hi Ally, I have not given the colour orange much consideration until recently. I received a bright orange hoodie as a gift recently. I love it. I found out my friend’s favourite colour is orange. And, now your post! Your heading photo is gorgeous. Canva’s description may be a message from the Universe for me. Or a message from Canva. Very creative, Ally, how you weave the colour descriptions around the photo.

    My favourite colour seems to be fluctuating. Used to be blue, often purple, and now possibly orange………🙂

    • Erica/Erika, I’ve noticed orange more this year than in the past, too. I’m right there with you about how it seems to be message from the Universe. I can’t wear the color orange, at all, but I like it in the garden and in my foods. Rather cool that your favorite color is fluctuating, that shows open-mindedness, which I think is a good thing. 🧡

  8. Love the colour orange, so vibrant & rich! According to my granddaughter, my favourite colour is pink, because that is her favourite colour,😂. I honestly just love colour so can’t even name a fav. 💕

  9. Your posts never raise my blood pressure, a good thing these days. I chose red because red shoes are on my book cover and I’m carrying a red purse these days, but purple is a close second. Who knew there were so many shades of orange. 🙂

  10. Turquoise is my favorite color. It’s so vibrant! Then I love violet and candy pink. Lime and sunflower. I like orange… with yellow and lime it gives that tropical pop. With gold and violet and pink, it gives a sunset. I like black and white too! Also brown, which is beautiful with turquoise ❤️

    • Paula, I like turquoise, too. It goes together with many other colors and looks great on me. I kept the poll choices limited for obvious reasons, but could get behind any of your color combos. I’m a nut for colors, too.

  11. I think old #45 has ruined the color orange for many people. I love more of coral shade that has a little pink in it. I chose yellow because for much of my life that was my favorite. Now I’m more like the color of the sky at sunset and ocean teal. Very pretty butterfly photo. Great job capturing that and how nice of him to wait until you got back with your camera!

    • Janet, you’re right about the negative association with the color orange now. The Donald is the nightmare that keeps on going. 😒

      I went with simple basic color choices on the poll, but teal is my favorite color, too. I like yellow to look at but it looks dreadful on me. I agree, it was darned nice of that butterfly to wait for me. Clearly he was a professional model.

    I can’t just pick one color. I like bright red and shiny blues and) oranges have grown on me over the years. I love the pink shades of sunrises and sunsets. Colors are just a wonderful thing!

      Good point about how orange is associated with transformation. It’s not my fave color, but I don’t hate it. I like transformation, positive transformation that is.

  16. How lovely to have captured the butterfly enjoying your autumn flowers – a very photogenic composition indeed. I’m definitely a lover of MANY colors, but orange might be one of least favorites. On the other hand, knowing that Crayola once dubbed it “Grandma’s perfume” is utterly hilarious IMO. What’s that about? Clearly I need to sniffing more grandmothers to get in on the secret.

  18. I’m not sure WHY purple is ‘my’ color, but it has been so since I was a small child. I just gravitated to it for whatever reason. I love all the shades of purple and people IRL will say “Oh you’re wearing YOUR color) if they encounter me wearing favored clothing. Now orange is lovely, for all the reasons you shared and for that lovely photo (awesome!!) but orange & I? Not friends. I tend to look jaundiced and/or dead if I wear it.

    • Melanie, I’m the exact same way if I try to wear orange. I look awful, sickly. It’s cool that you have a color that is immediately identified with you. I used to wear purple, but over the years it’s become too bold for me. Although I wouldn’t mind having some amethyst jewelry to wear purple as an accent.

      • My engagement ring is an amethyst and I own a couple of other rings with amethyst stones. I even own a “purple’ turquoise ring, which might sound rather odd, but apparently there is shading within the turquoise ‘family’. I have a lovely bracelet in deep purple (crystals) that my cousin gave me for Christmas one year. Yeah. I embrace the purple…. LOL

  19. Good tie in with the orange make up. Why does he do that?

    I like most shades of blue but green is a close second. Orange is not my favorite. A girl in high school loved orange and let’s just say as a non-orange person, that came as no surprise to me.

  20. I love orange, but interestingly I don’t wear it. I’m thinking back to my study and the sitting room in my old home in Johannesburg both of which had a wall each of orange … burnt orange maybe? And now I’m thinking about my study here in Plettenberg Bay that has touches of orange on various artefacts and I see I have a few paintings (mine) in which the background is black and the rest mostly orange. If I think of fruits, flowers and sunsets and the orange in them I’m in love. Your photo is beautiful Ally Bean – the green as a foil to the flowers and butterfly is perfect! I like green … a darker green. Lovely post … just sad about the association with ykw.

    • Susan, I’d say you are on Team Orange, to be sure. You’ve surrounded yourself with it, then and now. I agree that in nature orange is delightful. I cannot wear the color at all so I understand why it is that you don’t wear it. I lurved dark green when I was younger. Wore it all the time, but over the years I’ve drifted into teal/blue.

  22. I have touches or orange in my house – a little bit goes a long way inside or in my clothing. But in my garden, orange with blues or purples is just ideal. I picked blue, because I do love any shade of blue, mostly for clothing.

    • Carol, I agree with you about orange inside the house. A little bit is great but too much of it overpowers my senses. In our garden we currently have orange and pink and lots of green. Some purple would look nice in there. Thanks for the idea. 🤔

  23. Turquoise, purple, red – and black frames/sets off all of them.
    The monarchs (along with hummingbirds) must be starting migration – we’ve seen a few recently and happily the hibiscus and lantanas are starting their second blooming season with either being a little milder.
    Never really cared for orange flowers – as those seem less than cooling view in summer here – but the color looks great on tigers and pumpkins!

    • Margaret, I like blue, too. It’s soothing and uplifting to me. I wear it often, but never wear orange. It’s for the garden or fruits & vegetables. Definitely a poor choice for make up for The Donald.

  25. Love monarchs (and other butterflies). In Illinois, we had a butterfly bush right outside our living room window and what a joy that was, watching butterflies and hummingbird moths as well as the beauty of the flowers themselves. As for choosing colors, I have the same dilemma as many others: I don’t have just one favorite. I went with blue, but I also love green. I love yellow, but can’t wear it and I wear black a lot, although moving to Arizona has made that more difficult/seasonal. Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I’m just about ready to head off to Costco. Happy Wednesday!

    • Janet, a butterfly bush by your window would be delightful. I can imagine the fun. The thing about favorite colors is that for clothes it might be one color while for the garden it could be another. I like blue and green, too. I can understand your difficulty with black in AZ. It’s not the most comfortable when it’s hot outside– which to me is AZ in a nutshell.

  26. I picked purple as my favorite, but blue comes in at a close second. Both of those colors, in flowers, goes great with orange – a favorite combination. An accent wall in my office was a coral orange, picked by my hand, and it was pretty stunning.

  28. Great shot, and I like orange in nature. My favorite color, however, is blue because it reminds me of a wonderful blue sky or blue waters. I’ll steer clear of politics, but have you noticed all the colored hair recently on every age group? Most of those colors look like they melted a crayon to achieve that shade. One almost needs sunglasses to not be blinded. But, in 2020 whatever makes one happy. 🙂

    • Judy, I like blue better than orange, too. For the reasons you mentioned. I have noticed the boldly colored hair going on out there. My theory is that people aren’t going to salons, so they’re coloring their hair at home. In doing so they aren’t picking the best shades for themselves, which has made for some odd color jobs. 😳

    Orange is a color that offsets purple quite nicely…purple being the ‘fav’ color of choice for me these past few years. Though it is changing…we’ll see to what exactly but my rote answer is: purple.

    I love color. Period. I have to surround myself with it. If I wear all naturals, I feel bad physically (not just emotionally). Green is my favorite. Although sometimes it gets nudged to a close second by turquoise. Hugs on the wing.

    Blue bores me. Orange is lovely in nature, but tough to do well otherwise.
    I’m very sensitive to colour, and I find that I prefer to wear black more often now than I ever did. (This is difficult because Cats, but I refuse to give in to them.)

  34. My favorite color is green but it used to be blue. I didn’t realize blue was such a popular color. I also don’t know why people love being so anti-popular. There is probably a better word but I can’t think of it because of menopause. Everyone wants to be so edgy and like odd things but I think it’s pretty cool to like a color that everyone else likes. Even though green came in third place, I am proud of my color’s placing (way to go, green! better luck next time!) But now that I think about it, I do love the color orange too. That is why I love fall so much. The color palette alone of the trees makes me so happy.
    There is this great children’s’ book called “The Day the Crayons Quit” and even if you don’t have children, it is a fun read and I suggest it. Especially in light of this post. 🙂

  38. I’ve heard that orange also attracts wasps. Come to think of it, that does explain El Presidento’s legion of sycophants. I like all colors but generally lean towards either yellow or white. I’ve been told my aura was light yellow – I guess that proves I’m rather color-less and boring!

  39. Blue is my favorite color, especially shades of it like denim, indigo, chambray, cornflower and deep blue-green. I can be very picky about my blues! Not so fond of orange and other primary colors, although I kind of like what they call burnt orange or rust. After blues, my favorite colors are eggplant, plum, mauve and burgundy. Soft, rather than bold tones are more my cup of tea. But I don’t know why and am at a loss to explain why I love some colors and dislike others, like yellow…..

    • Barbara, your choices of the color blue are mine, too. I like blues that have greenish undertones more than the ones that lean purplish. Orange can be overwhelming in certain places. I like it in the garden and pops of it inside the house, but I cannot wear it.

      I like plums and burgundy, as well. They go so nicely with denim. I’ve found that some people just don’t like certain colors at all, and that’s ok. To each his or her own.

  40. When my daughter was little, she used to say that her favorite color was “rainbow.” I’m with her. I can never choose just one. But I love orange (and yellow and green), and that photo is all kinds of awesome.

  42. Midnight blue! As a little girl that was my favorite color among the crayons. I liked to draw and color the night sky with stars and the moon. It’s still my favorite color. Sadly, orange may never recover from the stain of this president😫 I did love your photo of the butterfly and the flower though💐🦋

    My favorite color is green — number one for 60 years. My second favorite shifted from yellow to purple a decade ago. There are no valid reasons for these choices.

    Helpful husband, teasing me about my penny-pinching habits, says I like green because it’s the color of money. Don’t believe him. I like green because it’s so green.

  48. Green and purple (alone or together) have always been my favorite colors. Olive green is the best for my eyes/skin tone, but mostly I’m just a nature girl. And purple because I bruise easily (just kidding there).

    What I like most about orange is orange foods. Cheddar cheese being number one.

    • Eilene, I understand your reasoning about your color preferences. I wore more olive green when I was younger with bright blonde hair, but my hair has gone grayish now and I favor blues. As for purple, you made me laugh.

    • Lynette, I used to groove on red, too. We had lots of it in our home on the walls + furniture. But somewhere along the line I began to prefer blue. I don’t know why, but there you have it. And a hard NO to having an orange car. I just couldn’t…

  51. Interesting that you posted this today. In Canada it is orange shirt day which represents our recognition of our terrible treatment of Indigenous children in the past and now.
    I could not pick one colour but blue and green shades and I love yellow.

  52. I voted on your poll positively ages ago – then I got lost browsing through your links 🙂 The Crayola one especially was responsible for many an hour lost. Whoever dreams up the names of colours deserves every good thing we can send their way.

    But on to more serious matters. How very “you” to lead with something which manages to be so very orange but gorgeous too. Fantastic photo and how well behaved of the butterfly to wait for you. BTW, have you read Barbara Kingsolver’s book on the Monach? If not, I can highly recommend it. Of course it’s about more than butterflies, there’s also climate change, but the best bit is the tale of the Appalachian farming family at the centre.

    But back to the poll. I voted blue for the first time ever, for it appears there’s been a stealth take-over by shades of bright blue/turquoise within my wardrobe. It might be something to do with my hair colour moving from grey to white in a frighteningly rapid manner.

    • Deb, I wonder about who names the crayons, too. I hope it’s a team. I want to be part of that team because think of how wacky fun the meetings would be. No tedious talk about quarterly revenue projections, instead glorious talk about adjectives and nouns.

      I didn’t know about the Kingsolver book and will get it. I don’t know as much as I should about butterflies, considering I’m trying to plant flowers that draw them here. I could use some info on their backstories.

      Blue looks good with white hair, or gray for that matter. The last time I looked at the poll blue was winning which was a surprise to me. I thought Purple or Red would take the prize.

  53. What’s with the lack of love for red? Red was my favorite color as a child, and despite many other colors trying to tempt me over the years, remains at the top of my chromatic favorite list. As for orange…. I’ve never really thought about it before, orange seems to be the lost color of the rainbow. That makes me appreciate it even more…

    You asking about favorite colors reminds me of when my girls were little and we were building our house. My painter asked about painting their rooms and asked Lolo what her favorite color is and she replied RAINBOW.

      I like teal, too. It’s probably my favorite color, but to keep things simple on this poll I went with the basic colors I had in my first grade Prang paint set.

      I love the idea of there being a color called rainbow. In the end, if it existed, it’d win the poll for sure.

  56. My favorite colors tend to be the blues and greens found in nature. I’m not usually a fan of the color orange, but that flower and butterfly both wear it well. I also realize that I do like the oranges of fall leaves. I suppose I do love the color in its natural occurrence, but I much prefer Lowe’s sign color to Home Depot’s. lol.

I generally don’t like orange on my clothes or couches or even really in my food (except yams – sometimes) but I do like orange tiger lilies (the flower) and butterflies. Otherwise, I’m not an “orange” personality. I’m blue – soft, soothing, although my waves can get high and wild at times. xo

  60. I love green, as I feel it is a calm color of nature. Perhaps because it is so brown here for much of the year. My father’s favorite color was orange, and my mother’s favorite color was burnt orange. Neither of them fit the descriptions you looked up, but that’s OK. Next I love blue, for the color of the sky and the sea. I guess I love nature.

  61. I love the orange butterfly and orange zinnia Ally. About a month ago I posted shots of Monarchs on Orange Lantana and called it “Orangeade” … a beautiful sight to remember now that Summer here in SE Michigan has beat a hasty exit and the furnace is already chugging away. Perhaps because, like you, Fall is my favorite season, I chose brown as my favorite color … I used to wear a lot of brown and loved the warm tones. Now, I throw on anything, sometimes not matching … oh well. I knew not many folks would pick brown and interesting that no one picked white as a favorite color. Maybe if you had run the poll right after Memorial Day? 🙂

    • Linda, I thought this photo was worth tossing onto the blog. I was pleased with it even if the color orange isn’t my preferred color. I rarely wear brown, although when I was younger with brighter blonde hair I used to wear it. I’ve no explanation for why white hasn’t been picked. I chose these particular colors for this poll because they were the ones in my first grade Prang paint set. Seems like someone would pick white. 🤔

        • Autumn is my favorite season. I bet you’re right about white, although if you go to Sherwin-Williams there are about a gazillion shades of white, many of which are lovely. Who knows. 🤷‍♀️

          • If you ever try to touch up a scrape in the paint and get the paint chips or the samples, some people can match it perfectly. I can never match it. Even when I save paint for touch-ups it does not seem to match. My vacuum cleaner cord is black – it mars everything it touches.

  62. I’m surprised that there are other people who voted orange in the poll. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone else whose favourite colour is orange.
    I once asked a friend about colours they like/dislike, and she said she hates orange, so I steered the conversation in a different direction…

    • Yvette, yes, best to limit the choices, focus attention, and get some answers. On the poll I used the colors from my first grade Prang watercolor paint set. Of course, my readers, being who they are, have commented that I didn’t list enough color choices. To which I say with love in my heart, tough darts! 😁

  67. I love this post so much! I think color is so cool! My son has a wall in his bedroom called “startled carrot” and it’s ORANGE. It’s his favorite color by far!

    • Katie, oh what a great name for a wall color. I like color, too. I am forever interested in how colors influence people. Plus I like to make polls once in a while, so naturally I had to add one here.
