On A Pretty November Day Chatting About Outdoor Furniture While We Wait*

AFTER A WET and thoroughly disappointing October, we’ve finally gotten to the pretty days of autumn.

The sky is clear blue with a few white puffy clouds, the leaves on the trees are gloriously colorful shades of gold and rust, and the daytime temps are in the 60s F.

I like everything about this scenario, so color me relaxed and happy in spite of what is going on in the world.

Nothing has been as I anticipated it would be this year, so why not have a delayed autumn? Maybe even a late winter, too?

WE’VE BEGUN TO carry some of the outdoor furniture inside, storing it in the basement like we do.  Instead of taking one day to move all the outside furniture inside, we’ll do it in dribs and drabs.  Rather like the way in which leaves drop from the trees in the fall.

We’re also talking about taking the bold step of ordering some new outdoor chairs and a rocker to add to our outdoor furniture collection.

I only mention that we’re thinking about doing this because the estimated delivery time for this type of composite Adirondack-style furniture is 3 months [or more].  Therefore, if we want these items by next spring [or summer], we must order them soon.

In other words there will be waiting involved;  and isn’t waiting the subtext of 2020? And today?

* It’s up to you, my gentle readers, to decide whether the wait mentioned in the title of this post is for furniture delivery OR for the polls to close today ending [I hope] this dreadful presidential election. Comment as you see fit.

  1. For both, but mostly for this dreadful presidential election to come to a conclusion, in part so we can plug our land line back in and get dreadful calls about mortgages and car warranties instead of dreadful calls about political candidates.

    • Zen-Den, yep. Once this election is over [IF it is over?] we’ll go back to what passes for normality this year. Waiting for furniture, waiting for a vaccine, waiting to dine in a restaurant again…

  2. Yesterday we looked at dryers because we thought the one we have is not drying properly. We had our choice of 3. Only 3 were available out of the 20 to 30 the appliance store carries and even those would come from a warehouse and delivery would be at least 2 weeks out. After a discussion with one of the knowledgeable guys there we decided to take another look at our dryer. Eureka! we had a blockage in the hose (even though my husband had used the vac on it). Dryer is working. I am hoping that nothing important like a refrigerator goes out because it’s all very grim so I’m not surprised that lawn furniture is in the same boat.

    • Kate, I’m glad you got your dryer repaired so you can avoid buying a new one. You’re the second person who I’ve heard talk about how dryers are difficult to come by. This is disturbing to me for the reason you mention. I AM VERY FUSSY ABOUT MY APPLIANCES, so if what I want isn’t available, should we need one heaven forbid, I don’t know what I’ll do.

    • We had dryer issues a few months ago too and fortunately my hubby was able to replace the fuse that was out. Also cleaned out the vent. Who knew so much stuff could get trapped in there? Bonus, I was able to clean out behind and beneath both the washer and dryer — probably hasn’t been done in about 15 years!

  4. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a new table and chairs for the patio, but I haven’t begun to look because I’m afraid I’ll find something I really like then I’ll have to get rid of some furniture I already have to make room…it feels like too much work.
    Then I think, “maybe just a cozy two seater breakfast table for the patio?” Which starts the whole process of thinking about it again.

    Order it if you love it and have room for it!

    • Deborah, I hear you. First there’s the problem of who’ll take your old stuff, then you have to decide on the new stuff, and then you wait. And wait. For the new furniture to arrive.

      [We bought a cozy bistro table with two chairs a few years ago and love it. The size is perfect and it’s easy to move around. Offered for what it’s worth]

      • It would be nice to have a real eating, tea sipping table and chair set up out there. Right now I have two coffee tables and seating around one of them, and seating around the firepit. One coffee table just sitting out there doing nothing. I’ll just keep thinking about it for awhile longer. Come Spring I’ll wish I did something different I reckon. 😀

  5. It’s all about the waiting this year – waiting for the pandemic to be over, waiting for the election to be over, waiting for all the personal trials of the year to be behind us. And we in California are still waiting for the first drop of rain since March! I would like some new patio furniture- guess I will have to wait until I have some extra money!

    • SD Gates, yes you said it! I’m not usually frustrated by circumstances beyond my control, but even I’m getting tired of this constant waiting. As for the furniture– it requires making a decision now, handing over the credit card info, then waiting until an undetermined time in the future when we’ll be charged for the furniture. I don’t like this sort of transaction, but if we want something for 2021 this is the game we’ll play. Tedious, it’s all tedious

  8. I wonder if people being at their homes more during pandemic has caused people to order new outdoor furniture, as in: “Wow, our furniture is old. I hadn’t noticed. Let’s order something new.” Maybe that explains the back up on ordering?

    As far as the election goes, I am ready to have it over with – no more commercials and tidbits in the news. By tidbits I mean NONSENSE. I am of the mind that either choice is rotten. How can neither party come up with a decent option?

    It’s going to be in the 60s daily in Chicago most days for the next week, I think. I am taking my babysitting tots/babies to the zoo tomorrow. Already have a reservation. I’m springing Curly from a few hours of e-learning so she can join us.

I’m going to work for awhile, where the waiting can be forgotten at least for a time… It is lovely to look outside and see the trees, see the animals preparing for winter (the squirrels are running amok) and when I just opened my curtains I saw the most beautiful beginning to the sunrise, all pink and orange and purple. I am going to choose to believe that was a sign that life will be better, chaos will not reign and we can step out of a bit of the darkness of this last year. **I also vote yes on the outdoor furniture order. What a lovely thing to look forward to come spring**

  11. I find the seasons have shifted…..fall goes on much longer and warmer than it used to, often up until Xmas, and the springs are much later and colder. Not every year, but enough years that I’m thinking it’s part of the climate change that no one ever discusses. After reading the comments I think I need to start looking for a new fridge….it’s been making strange noises and I’d hate to lose that stash of pandemic food in the freezer. I think the whole world is waiting nervously for the outcome…..although I doubt it will be truly over for weeks.

    • Joni, I’ve found the same thing with fall around here. Some years the potted geraniums stay alive until Christmas, which 20 years ago would never have happened.

      If your fridge is beginning to do the wonky, that’s lousy. From what I’ve heard & read appliances are difficult to find. Well, ones that you want, I guess. I also agree that I don’t think this election will be decided for weeks. Just to keep us in a state of anxiety a little longer… 🙄

  12. I tried to get a chest freezer last spring, but the delay was until July, maybe, and now I’m thinking that’s something I should get on now. If I can, and if I want to get serious about growing some food next year. Which makes me think about what I might actually be doing next year, and that feels hard to know, and so…no freezer on order.

    And “no freezer on order” might be a metaphor, too. For a lot of things. Fall is late coming here, too, and I, too, was rather reveling in its gorgeous arrival over the past weekend. Cool enough to walk in my plaid wool shirt, warm enough not to need a jacket, sunshine and color everywhere. I have no landline or cable and have seriously drifted away from social media, and I’m the better for all of those things. I’m also handy with blocking numbers from my phone. I’m glad that waiting for this day is finally over, trepidatious as I am for what might be coming at us in the days to come. (Our governor declared a state of emergency yesterday, just so they can be ready to mobilize in response to whatever might go down. On the one hand, good: Let’s be prepared. On the other…wow. Wowwowwow. This is where we are.)

    • Rita, yes, this is where we are. I cannot believe it either. Good point about your real life freezer metaphor. I don’t like reading that your governor declared a state of emergency as a preemptive measure, yet we have to deal with things as safely as possible.

      I’m good at blocking numbers on my cell phone, too. I’m also good at muting/blocking people on social media, so I feel like I don’t get inundated with the hate that is floating around out there in social media. Again, we all stay healthy in our own ways.

      In the meantime, at least for today, I’m going for a long walk on a pretty November day. Best to let things unravel as they will.

  13. I think the entire world is waiting today, to see what happens in your country. My most fervent wish is for an end to the Trump presidency and a peaceful handover, I am a bit scared for you and all my American friends, regardless of the election outcome.

    • Deb, thanks for your concern. I’d be lying if I said we weren’t aware of how out of control people may become as a result of this election. We live in a conservative area in which people cling to the past, fearful of a future that might challenge them to do better/different. They believe they’re doing the right thing by never changing– which of course is impossible to do. But *hey* don’t let logic get in your way… 🤨

  14. We don’t have to put our outdoor furniture away here, but I was thinking this morning – as I looked out at the fog that has made everything wet – that it may be time to put the covers on. Then, I looked at my weather app and saw that it will be in the 80s on Thursday, so maybe I should wait a bit longer.

    • Janis, some of our outdoor furniture is able to withstand the winter temps, so it stays out. But the wicker and the wood and the glass-topped tables go to the basement. It sounds like you’re not quite ready to cover your furniture– and aren’t you lucky because of it! Enjoy your temps

  16. It’s a beautiful day here as well, Ally. Sunny, clear blue skies, and high’s in the 50’s, which we haven’t seen in awhile other than the day it thundered and rained all day. I hope to ignore social media for most of the day, go for a bike ride, and keep hopeful and pleasant thoughts.

    Enjoy putting away the outdoor furniture while deciding to order new. It never hurts to think about next spring, even this early. Have a lovely day!

  17. I think cultivating patience is the best advice. That, and prayer. But since I’m not a praying kind of gal, I’ll work on patience. God knows (see what I did there?) I could use more of that.

    Enjoy your lovely fall weather – we had snow the last two days – the place is entirely shades of grey and white. But the forecast looks fabulous, so there is that.

    • Maggie, you’re right about cultivating patience. 2020 has been one long case study in patience– at least on days when I felt like being positive.

  19. I’m looking out on snow here in Ottawa. It’s temporary – apparently by Friday it will be sunny and 17 degrees Celsius here (62 degrees F). The fact that it’s temporary is helpful. A good reminder that all things that feel cold shall pass.

  20. Having nice weather and blue sky is an excellent tonic for the mood. I’m trying not to look ahead too far or hope too much about things being different in 2021. Trying to enjoy what I can and adapt to circumstances are my goals these days.

  22. Waiting on tenterhooks for the election results. The weather here in Florida has volley down slightly and also the humidity is down, something we’ve been waiting for. I just took the ‘waterproof’ covers off our outdoor furniture, only to find some patches of mildew on the chairs. 😳 I’ve sprayed them and scrubbed at them and am now waiting for the patches to dry to see if my efforts have worked. We’re all waiting for something. Lord give me patience, but please hurry. 🤣

    • anotherday2paradise, part of the reason I like November around here is because the humidity goes down. I’m sorry to read about the mildew on your outdoor furniture. We get that occasionally here and like you, all we can do is try to remove it, then wait. I’m with you about wanting patience– fast.

  24. We have a big backyard and even with my studio in it, we have room for something fun but we haven’t decided what yet. I’m thinking fire pit and some chairs but we are waiting a bit to save some money for it. As for the other waiting, I just took my hubby to the airport so that he can go visit his mom, the kids are all at work and I took the dog for a walk so he is tired. I am sitting here enjoying the absolute quiet that I never seem to get lately. I am purposely not looking at the score yet.

    • Janet, it took us most of the summer before we decided what furniture we wanted where. Now the trick is getting it. No fire pit for us, though.

      I enjoy the quiet that comes from being home alone, all creatures off doing their things. I’ll not look at any news until later this evening. Watching how it unfolds is unnecessary. Like you I’ll see the score when I see it.

  25. We need some outdoor furniture, so you’re welcome to store yours in Arizona for the winter. 🙂 We also need some living room furniture because we didn’t move our couch and main chair. Once I feel better, I have to get going on that so we have the living room done before Christmas. Our back yard has a big square that in the shot included in the rental information was full of flowers, but must have been used as a fire pit since that photo. We’ll probably go with the fire, pit, although that leaves it unused for the majority of the year. 🙂

  26. I feel like today is all about waiting, for sure. Feeling kinda anxious by afternoon and all my spiritual practices are nowhere to be found, darn them! (Better luck tomorrow.) We’ve heard rumors about the long waits on furniture. Like we need a couch. They say it will be forever before we get one. Am now pondering a slipcover.     • Kathy, this is the first time we’ve turned our attention to buying any furniture since the pandemic started. We ordered some pillows and a rug, but nothing large like what we’re thinking about now. I’m hearing more and more stories about how appliances aren’t readily available– and this is concerning to me.   28. We are supposed to be warm for the rest of the week so I am planning on finishing up the garden winter work. I could be doing it today, but today I am scheduled to sit and worry about stuff. Plus, there’s always tomorrow for that garden stuff, might need the physical activity to keep my mind at bay.

  30. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. But here’s the blessing: I am a Justice of the Peace in my town and worked the ballot box this morning. By noon, 2/3 of our registered voters had cast their ballots either by absentee or in person. Everyone was respectful, kept their distance, wore their masks, and was polite and proud they had a vote in this great country.

It’s been a long day of doctor’s appointments, financial decisions that had to be made, consoling an old friend in a heap of trouble …. a couple of aspirins will probably knock me right out.     and in a way – the idea of spring furniture arriving in a handful of months – reminded me that 2021 will be here soon and a new year –

    oh and my neighbor ordered new appliances sometime early summer and they waited a log time for them to come – things are picking back up around here, but it really has been a year of different and a year of waiting

    • Yvette, this post is a tribute to writing a la stream of consciousness. I was thinking about one thing that lead to another and eventually landed on a truth: waiting is THE word of 2020. You’re the best for noticing that.

      I’m pleased to read that appliance availability and delivery is picking up around you. Here, I’m happy to report, I don’t know a soul who has found herself in the new appliances quandary– but friends elsewhere talk of it.

  37. I am all for more patio furniture because someday we will be able to have our friends and family over for bbq and outdoor fun! It is a hopeful thing😊 Not unlike this election, although as the results trickle in, I am less hopeful that a clear message about who we are as Americans will emerge. 😟 No matter who wins now it seems we are a people of two minds. I hope tomorrow when I wake up the winner will be a president who will try and reunite this country 🇺🇸

      I know what you mean about this election being less decisive than you’d like. I agree that we are currently a country wherein some people are moral while others are amoral, not acknowledging that there is such a thing as morality & thereby dismissing any need to behave decently.

    • Nancy, you’re an optimist. We can’t find anyone to rebuild the deck so at this point that project hangs [pun intended] in the balance. But we are going to order the outdoor furniture anyway, because it’ll be snazzy. And you know how I feel about snazzy!

  42. There’s just so much you can find that has been waiting for you to do and now there’s time while waiting for other things!
    The long/unreliable shipping times are becoming pretty annoying, but since the lock downs, planning long term/anticipating time lags has become easier.
    So, waiter, order the patio furniture! Pictures of it and estimated delivery date will make you smile all winter. (And waiting exhausted for that deck replacement – decks are more important than ever! Somewhere there’s got to be someone wanting to earn some holiday gift money?)

    • philmouse, we’ll order the furniture this weekend. Like you and so many other commenters have said, waiting for it during winter will give me something to look forward to.

      As for getting someone to work on the deck, it’s a catch-22 every which way I turn. There are issues getting wood &/or composite materials before we get to the who’ll build the deck. We’ve interviewed a few men. There’s no agreement on how to rebuild the deck, each joker offering a different pov. All of them, however, do assure us that building supplies are difficult to come by. 🤨

  43. Hmmm, waiting on LLBEAN?
    I ordered the All-Weather collection plus the Lounger in mid-October. I wanted to have some assurance that what I was ordering would all be the same color and truest in stock (not on a back order), so I called in my order by phone. Sure enough all in stock, but to get all of what I want I had to go with the green. We had to figure that same color thing out over the phone. Yes, 3 months for shipping. Christmas not guaranteed. To be delivered to home between Dec 23 – Jan 5. I laughed and said it would have to become a holiday gift to myself! Eased the tension. A few days later, I received delivery of the lounger in green (much to my surprise!)

    This wait of outdoor furniture really isn’t the same intense wait that I feel for election results!

    But you usually give me a great laugh and I’m I’m not alone or declaring insanity of my ordering patio furniture so far in advance! Enjoy Autumn! We are having a great weather pattern here too!!

    • TD, why yes the furniture we want is from LL Bean. How did you guess? We want the dark green color & will do the same thing that you did to insure “in stock” means in stock. It won’t matter if we don’t get the furniture until February because we’ll have to build it. A nice mid-winter project.

      Agree about the tension while we wait for the election results. The wait for the furniture will be nothing in comparison.

  47. Very few things are spur of the moment these days. We have to plan ahead and then order and wait. So I guess it’s fine that it will take a while to find out who will be our new president. Despite being on the West Coast, we had our returns very quickly. Our governor got a third term.

    I’m waiting now to get my desktop computer working. First the computer seemed to crash. I ordered a new computer. When it came, I took it to the shop, and they transferred my files. I brought it home, and found out my monitor was incompatible. So I ordered a new monitor. I waited for that. And now I can’t figure how to set it up. So I’m waiting for Joe from the shop to come and help. That’s the waiting I’ve been doing.

    I think Biden will be a fine president who will reach out to work with others and that is surely what we need right now.
    It is getting close now – the AP says he has 264 electoral votes (270 is the magic number)! Hang in there!

  49. Wow, Ally, you have a lot of patience – 3 months – we said “no” to 5 months wait for a couch set, because it would come out of Norway. Hope that 10 days is enough for the counters to get their act together – in any case, before Thanksgiving, would be awesome!

    • Junie, the thing is we won’t use this outdoor furniture until next March or April, so we’ll order it knowing it’ll take at least 3 months which should get it here by the time we want it. Yep, they who count hold our fate in their hands. Waiting, waiting, waiting…

  51. I’m hopelessly behind in Reader and have been for weeks, but sad to say that two days later we still don’t know who the next Prez will be. Michigan finally finished up, got a lawsuit and it was dismissed. Michigan was hoping to be the deciding state in this election, but our glory days are passed. Three months for your order … is that due to the Christmas rush for UPS/Fed Ex, or they are popular items?

    • Linda, the furniture is popular and like everything else we’ve ordered since the pandemic began, companies have many sly reasons why they’re behind on filling orders. No matter really because we won’t want to use the furniture until March at the earliest, so we’ll order it now.

      • You’ve got plenty of time. Well people likely will be into staycations next year too.

        I went to a new wildlife refuge that opened in October. One of the cool things they had were wooden overlooks and observation decks, both in the middle of the woods, as well as around the visitor center (which is not finished yet and also totally closed due to COVID). On these wooden platforms they have lime green Adirondack chairs. I thought it was different and I’d be curious to see if they will be left out in Winter. They likely were composite wood materials as I could tell they were not real wood. I took some pictures which I’ll use sometime down the road. It was a huge locale and I will do the trek in two parts.

          • I think so too – I’m pretty sure they are all-weather as they just opened in early October. It is a fun place, blending 300-year-old forests with modern touches. They have a wooden outlook that is covered in huge branches and twigs to look like a blind. It was supposed to open long before this, but COVID slowed the opening.

  52. I’m sitting here three days after the election catching up on blogs, and the dang thing still isn’t over. I don’t fault anyone. I mean, I want them to do an accurate, thorough job of counting votes, but seeing “on the brink” and similar “knife-edge” terminology is getting a wee bit tiresome.

  53. Sounds like a bit of workout moving the furniture indoors before winter. Who knows, maybe you will get a late winter. Here in Australia in the southern hemisphere we are in spring heading into summer. We sort of got an early spring and temperatures have been mild for a couple of months already.

    For us here, it seems like winter just disappeared overnight. But we are still having the occasional cold day here and there.

    Hope you get to decide on new outdoor furniture. It does take a while for new furniture to ship…and sometimes it’s just a matter of going into a warehouse, putting it on a truck and getting it to you lol.

    • Mabel, yes we keep some of our outdoor furniture inside for the winter because it’ll last longer [the furniture]. The new pieces that we’re thinking about buying could stay out all winter as they are four season furniture, which is another reason I’m all for getting them. Less furniture to move inside is fine by me.

      Your days moving into summer sound lovely. I like all seasons, but late spring/early summer are when my creative juices get flowing on high.

      • That makes sense to bring outdoor furniture during winter so it will last longer. It would be nice if you can get some furniture for winter – great for sitting out there on sunny winter days.

        I think the spring and summer light and longer days make us all want to do a bit more. Summer is when I feel most energised 🙂

  55. Waiting is no fun! We waited for two beautiful couches to be delivered that took awhile because of delays due to Covid. After two attempts it was determined there was no way the couches would fit up our staircases, so we are now waiting again – on loveseats. Ugh! Frustrating!

    • That’s super frustrating. I know that all furniture orders are slower than normal because of the pandemic, but to have them not fit… oh, I am sorry. Bet the loveseats will be great.

  56. 2020’s big wait has made a mockery of my WOTY – Act, so I’ve had to focus on making sure I do take action whenever it’s in my power to do so. Himself & I talked in March about our expectation that this would be a long haul and, as a result, we haven’t changed our behaviour much throughout. It’s not been easy & there has been some grief to handle along the way, but we’re plodding along in our own little bubble playing the long waiting game.

    As to “the result”, I’ve tried to stay away, but was mightily relieved when I spotted a tabloid newspaper’s pithy headline “Trump Dumped” in the supermarket yesterday.

    • Deb, I hear ‘ya. My word of the year is simplify. Like you with your word, 2020 has screwed with my plans for the ways in which I wanted to incorporate simplify into my daily life. We’ve also tried to remain as *normal* as possible during a year that has tested every relationship. It’s the long game, for sure.

      And yes, the news about the election is good news. I’m beginning to breathe more deeply and relax my furrowed brow. Tomorrow I’ll post on the topic.
