Waiting For The Inauguration, I Snark + Laugh + Celebrate A Blogging Milestone

Tomorrow is THE DAY when 81,009,468 Americans finally will get to say: “Don’t let the door hit you on the butt as you leave, Donald. You’re fired.”

[Lock him up.]

I tell ‘ya, what a clusterfork these last four years have been*. I’m emotionally exhausted by the hate, intellectually tired of the stupidity, and morally outraged by the greed.

You probably are, too.

However, be that as it may, as we wait for better days ahead, here’s a smorgasbord of four images I’ve saved over the last few months, waiting for the perfect time to share them here.

Why today? Two reasons.

First this is something to do until the adults take over the government tomorrow. And secondly, yesterday was the ten year anniversary of this blog** and I wanted to quietly make note of it.

I saw this sticker on a car, an old Impala sedan. A bit of fast research and now I know that it’s a way to say “Baby on Board.” I’m unclear if this is new or old urban slang, but it caught my eye on a car out here in suburbia.

Have you seen this sticker before?

I’m seeing this saying all over the place, however I’ve no primary source for it which is a bummer because it is clever. I realize that attempting to overthrow the government is serious, but this sentiment amuses moi.

Thoughts, anyone?

When I opened an old family cookbook out fell this newspaper clipping for a drink called a Trojan Horse. One of my ancestors, probably my father, must have saved this absinthe, anisette, and gin drink that is described as: “infiltrates slowly without your knowing it and then hits you all of a sudden about an hour later.”

None for me, thanks. And you?

Van Gogh and Hemingway imbibed, and while they were creative things didn’t end well for either the artist or the writer.

    • Marian, I’m as surprised as anyone that I’ve managed to write a blog for this long. Wasn’t my goal when I started, but here I am. 🤷‍♀️

      No way would I drink absinthe. Pretty much for the reason you mentioned. It was the downfall of many a good person. Plus I bet it tastes awful, but leave it to my dad to have a drink recipe with the stuff in it.

  6. Cannot wait for tomorrow! I have been glued to CNN since November and I have learned so much. I am so relieved for America and for the world. Now we just have to get rid of our own “British Trump” (as Trump called him, and I agree, they are cut from the same cloth). Four more years though, barring overthrow.

    Never seen or heard of the bumper sticker before. I’m afraid I read it in a slightly more crude way as in the baby is still on board the mum, and cooking, not out and in the car 😕

    Love the Trojan horse cocktail but 1 Oz of absinthe? That would finish me on its own. I think that’s a perfect name for that drink.

    Congratulations on 10 years of blogging!! I think I’ve been around for most of that 👏🎉 Always enjoy your writing 🙂

      I can understand why you’ve been watching CNN since November. The endless news about Trump’s mediocrity has dominated everything in this country, perhaps the world, for the last four years– and it’s time to send him to the curb. Good riddance to bad rubbish, as they say.

      I didn’t know what to make of that bumper sticker. I think it’s stupid, but whatever, dude. It’s your car, do with it what you will.

      I agree about the absinthe. No way would I drink any of it. Probably tastes awful, too. But the name of the drink is great.

      Yes, you’ve been around since the beginning of this blog. Thanks for that. I appreciate it. When are you going to start blogging again? Miss you.

      • Ally, all good here, thank you. School is online and I’m working at home, so dodging the covid. The cat goes out more than I do now! Thank goodness for wifi and internet and blogs and being able to connect with people. Goodness knows what life would have been like if covid had struck before those things were accessible. Not sure about blogging – I think about it from time to time. You are very kind.

        The inauguration is 5pm our time, so a perfectly acceptable time to pop the fizz open and toast the grown-ups coming back into the room. Stay safe Ally! Much love x

  7. Thanks for this cleverly written blog. I’m 1,000 percent with you on the end of the Trump presidency. I won’t call it an administration, because that word implies order and leadership. The authorities are talking about charging Trump with obstruction of justice and other felonies. I hope it happens.

I’ve read the same things you have about The Donald being charged with just about anything and everything. If it happens I’ll be interested in seeing the man experience some real consequences for his actions– perhaps for the first time in his life.

    • Lynette, I only recently began seeing the coup d’état meme, which shows how out of touch I am with social media. I’m as amazed as anyone that I’ve kept a blog for 10 years. I’m not sure how it happened, but here I am. So happy that we met along the way.

    Tomorrow can’t come fast enough, but that won’t be the end of turmoil, we all know that. Sparkling white terrorism, homegrown and nourished, has a loud new voice, an ugly sound that has been repeated here since 1619. But I am hopeful that these people have finally gone too far, I’m encouraged that their own families and friends are turning them in and offering evidence.

    I don’t think I’d go anywhere near that drink….

I also agree that it’s fascinating to see families and friends FINALLY stop enabling the ungrateful idiots who want to destroy this country. About time, if’n you ask me.

    Part of me wants to **not** watch the Inauguration – fears of scenes from Jan 6th…but regardless, the first formal steps are being taken towards a shift away from the status quo of these past 4 years. Yippee!

      I’m watching the inauguration with Prosecco in hand. It’s the least I can do to show support for this country’s democratic process AND because there’s going to be a woman VP. I cannot, cannot, cannot overemphasize how happy I am about that. 🥂

    I’m ready for the changeover, too. So ready. I’m still holding my breath until the buffoon is caged.

      You’re right about these last five years. I still *almost* cannot believe that The Donald, a reality TV host and failed real estate businessman, became president of this country. While I will perform a small happy dance upon seeing the oath of office enacted tomorrow (although I have to work so it will probably be after the actual event) I still feel apprehension and probably will for some time. There is too much unrest, plotting and subversion still going on to feel the orange idiots reign is really over. The drink sounds awful, but I am not a fan of anything licorice/anise flavored. I bet it would knock you on your proverbial a** though.

I live in a politically conservative area where people enjoy their white privilege and no doubt will be whining about how Joe and Kamala are taking it away from them. Must do something about it. Just what they’ll do, I don’t know… but the events on January 6th give me pause.

    • Rivergirl, I don’t know what absinthe tastes like but I’m going to go ahead and say I don’t like it. Leave it to my father [probably] to save a recipe for a drink like that one. He loved the chemistry of cocktails.

      Agree about tRump paying the piper. He’s done damage that’ll take decades to fix, but in the meantime a little jail time might do him good.

      • I had my first absinthe cocktail about 7 years ago in a prohibition style bar. It has a very strong anise/licorice flavor, if licorice were left to ferment in your basement for 10 years or so. It’s quite overpowering … and deadly. Literally and figuratively.

It will be sweet if #45 gets in trouble for his evil deeds but I am afraid that his “followers” have been so brainwashed that they will try to carry on without him. There are a few more people that need to be removed (IMO) from their lofty seats. I’ll be doing what I can to promote healing, one smile at a time!

    I have been feeling misty all week knowing he is leaving the WH. I realize there is a long road ahead, but it feels better already, you know?
    Moira wasn’t my initial favorite character and in fact, she didn’t get her amazing inflection and her character didn’t truly develop until season two. I think. Then I fell madly in love with her too.

      I didn’t take to SC until season two. I fast-forwarded through season one, but then sometime during season two I was hooked. Had to see where the story was going. Loved the characters. Now the whole show makes me smile and feels like something wonderful.

      I agree that things feel better already. Just get 45 out of the picture, and we can move forward again. Noon tomorrow cannot get here too fast.

I live in the D.C. area and the vibe here is tense even in the suburbs where for days large military aircraft carrying troops have populated the skies.😐 I believe in Biden & Harris but am nervous about all the emboldened crackpots and extremists who are far from ready to give up their agendas. All that said I think we share the view that it’s best to try not to get too worked up.

      I thought the Baby Up sticker was odd. I don’t see a need for it, but apparently enough people do so they make them.

  28. Congrats Ally Bean on 10 years! Tues in nicely with entry and exit (dt). Will be watching the inauguration maybe not live because of time difference. But will definitely be glued to the set. May there be a peaceful transfer of power. Familiar with the coup’dëtat meme which keeps on popping up. Watched some of SC but been advised I really have to see the first four or five episodes before passing judgment. So will persevere.

      I feel the same way about Schitt’s Creek. It was the perfect show to watch while stuck at home. I love David, but in the end it’s Moira who stole my heart. She is a goof, who means well– and wears the most memorable outfits of any TV character I’ve seen.

  34. Happy Blogiversary! Ten years of anything is a milestone worth noting.

    Back in the late 80s, I had a postcard on my fridge that looked like the (at that time) new “Baby on Board” car signs, with a picture of a naked doll nailed (through the head) to a piece of lumber at the bottom of it. So, you can image my appreciation of your new iteration. (As a twentysomething beyond irritated with the Boomer shadow I’d lived my whole life under, I found the thirtysomething crowd’s adoration of their offspring a bit too precious.)

    And, I will admit that I spent more minutes than I care to admit looking for the deeper meaning of the cocktail recipe with respect to current events. I was sure there was significance in the egg whites. Kind of spooky how much every word of that recipe reads like code for what’s happened to us.

    I will also jump on the Schitt’s Creek bandwagon, and agree that if it weren’t for the pandemic, I don’t know that I would ever have gotten past season 1. Can’t we all, at least to some degree, relate to feeling as if our world got pulled out from under us with no warning? Still just in season 3 here, trying to dole it out to myself like candies.

      I don’t remember ever seeing the naked doll picture you describe, but I take your point about the Boomer adoration of the Boomer kidlets. ‘Twas a bit much. As if no generation before had had children.

      The cocktail recipe is trippy. I hadn’t thought to look at it from a current events point of view. I was more literal, wondering if I could even take a sip of the drink.

      I doled out SC, too. I watched two episodes at a time, then made myself wait until the next day. You’re right about relating to the feeling of our world being pulled out from underneath us. That may be part of the reason why the show became so popular during these last few years. Plus, of course, Moira’s wigs + costumes. They’re like a character with its own plot line within the story.

  37. Happy Blogoversary! An immpressive accomplishment as far as I’m concerned.

    I don’t wanna be a rain cloud but I’m scared to death for the inauguration. I keep imagining some loyal Trump supporter “taking back America.” If we get through it, Mr. Biden has an overwhelming number of things to try to fix after the last four years. I believe it’s going to take working together as a country and letting go of all the hate – and I don’t see that happening. I have hope but it’s tempered with bleak, depressing, fear that the poison in the well is not going to be easily neutralized.

    • Zazzy, I take your point. I’m hardly a Pollyanna [as I’m sure you’ve noticed] but I will take the high road about what Biden & Harris can accomplish once in office. At least they can point the country in a forward direction instead of this unrealistic concept of going back in time. We all move forward, that’s how life works.

      I’m not sure you can ever deprogram someone who enjoys hate, but you can squelch their opportunities to be hateful and get any external validation for it. Maybe that’s the reality we have to face first. I dunno. To quote Klinger in M*A*S*H, “if I had all the answers, I’d run for God.”

My husband and I were talking this morning about the return of the grownups to Washington DC, and we agreed that we probably would have been looking for another country to live in if the election results were different. It will be 9am here when we have the changing of the guard so, unfortunately, there won’t be champagne (at least in the morning)… lots of happy dances, though. Part of me wants trump and his family to just disappear into obscurity, and part wants to see them outfitted in orange. I guess I’ll be happy either way.

        • Yes, we have a new President and I am happy. You’re right about keeping a blog. Overall I enjoy it, but it can be time-consuming and there are days when I wonder how much longer I’ll do this.

          • Me too, even if I couldn’t vote as I’m Canadian. Biden was my choice. I see some dignity restored, just from watching the highlights of the inauguration. I told myself I had to step back after the new year began as it was consuming massive amounts of time and I can’t get other things done in the house, reading. I have photos from last Fall, that I’m still sorting out, so I will have content through the end of March as I didn’t get time to go through the photos timely and keep up on WP as well.

  52. By the time I got to reading this, there was no Orange shadow over your country – hurrah! I watched bits & pieces of the inauguration and was moved. The highlight for me was the pure delight & joy on the face of your new female VP. I’d have voted for “the lady with the emails” too if I’d not been a Brit – nice euphemism btw 🙂 I hope you & Z-D enjoyed your fizz & the upswing in optimism.

    As to Absinthe – no. Just no. I’ve been a big drinker in my past (rugby clubs will do that to you) but would have steered clear of it even back then. Recently Himself found a Youtube channel where a young Irish crowd try out various products, quite a high percentage of which are alcohol. They had an Absinthe feature which went downhill extremely quickly.

    • Deb, I enjoyed the whole inauguration. It was calm and dignified, it was inspiring, and it gave us our first woman VP. It’s the last point that gives me the most hope. I like Joe, mind you, and think he’ll do great BUT Kamala has won my heart.

      I’ve no desire to try absinthe. The flavor sounds dreadful, the history of the stuff is dreadful, and I fear I’d behave dreadfully if I imbibed any of it.

      Thanks for your support regarding this blog’s birthday. I wasn’t going to say anything then WP sent me a notice telling me it was the anniversary of this blog, so I felt it was a sign for me to toot my own horn. In truth, I don’t know how much longer I’m going to keep writing this blog [it is work-y] but if I go I’ll let everyone know, not slink off into the night [like our former so-called president].

    I’ve only been watching Schitt’s Creek for a couple of months now — it’s one of the few shows that regularly makes me laugh out loud, a rare thing during the pandemic. Spent the whole day yesterday glued to the TV, at first to make sure the orange nightmare actually left and then to make sure he wasn’t coming back. After Harris and Biden were sworn in my husband and I broke out in cheers and clapping and then prayed that he will be up to the task of cleaning up the mess left behind…

      We watched the inauguration while eating lunch. I had Prosecco on hand so we could toast to Joe and Kamala– and to a better future for all of us good people.

      I figure tRump is down in FL pouting and plotting and pilfering all he can before they send him packing. When he’s worn out his welcome there, who knows where he’ll go. Eventually no one ever wants him– and isn’t that the hallmark of a sad, sad life?

The first one, Baby up in this bitch, may be a Baby on board variant, but the fact that it’s on an Impala makes me think it’s probably a Supernatural reference. The boys tool around hunting monsters in an Impala inherited from their father, and Dean calls the car Baby. Just a thought. Congratulations on your blogiversary, congratulations to us all for having you to help us through these last 400 years — I mean 4 years, and thanks for the laughs. 😀

  55. Happy 10th Anniversary on the blog! I loved Schitt’s Creek and was so sad to see it end. Angela Gorman’s poem was beautiful and I hope we all can embrace her ending lines: “For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.”

  57. Oh, I do not like a drink that sneaks up on you. I drink too much, too fast, of anything I’m drinking…water, tea, soft drink, juice, alcohol, so something like that would probably put me in the hospital. Best left to those who can nurse a drink all evening.

    Congratulations on your blogaversary! It’s been great to ‘know’ you lo these many years.

    Here we are on the other side of Inauguration Day, and I feel like I’m slowly starting to unclench a bit. I have a friend who has been posting on Facebook…way back when Trump first took office, he would post every day, “This is not normal. Day 1.” And so on. He did that for quite awhile, and I’ll admit that it was stressing me out. Then last year he started posting, “This is not normal. 150 days until we can change it.” That felt great! Then after the election, he posted, “This is not normal. 60 days until it is.” Finally yesterday, after the inauguration, he posted, “This is normal.” SO GREAT to read it and feel it.

    • J, I drink beverages quickly, too. I could never enjoy the flavors in the Trojan Horse, let alone drink it slowly. It’s not for me, no matter how historically accurate the recipe may be.

      THIS IS NORMAL. I love that way of confirming that Joe and Kamala are in charge now. I can understand how your friend meant well with his not normal count, but so much better to focus on the good than mark the time with evil.

    • joey, I, too, rolled my eyes more in the last four years than in all the years before. The whole idea of not voting for someone because of a few emails seems quaint now, everything considered.

      I’ve never seen that sticker on a car before, so it seemed new to me, but I doubt that it is. What really got me was the car it was on was so perfectly maintained, then that sticker. 🤔

I’ve only been at this about 2.5 years, but already I can tell that most people – even the ones you think will stick it out – come and go with their blogs. I get it. Life gets in the way. But still, I’d like to think that someday I will hit my ten year blogging anniversary. I guess we’ll know in 7.5 years. Anyway, well done on your stick-to-it-ivness.

    • The Travel Architect, thanks! I wasn’t going to mention this milestone then I had a change of heart. One of my late mother’s good friends who reads along here told me I needed to “toot my own horn.” She’s a wise woman so I did, quietly.

      You’ve hit upon what I think is one of the most difficult aspects of blogging. I, too, understand that people come & go and why it happens, but sometimes it’s sad to see someone who I thought of as a friend… just ghost. I’m dropped like a lead balloon.

      I look forward to reading your 10 year anniversary post. I see you as a blogger who’s in it for the long haul.
