When Muse Is Feeling Blah, There Are Random Links To Share On A Tuesday

I’ve been feeling under the weather this week with a sore throat and my ears hurt. And I have a headache.

I just want to sleep.

I’ll survive, but I can’t think of much to write about today, so how about I share some links with you, my gentle readers and kind lurkers?

That’s a good way for me to make the world a little more clear, a little less cluttered, and not ugly.

Enjoy

  1. Ally, I’m so sorry to hear that you’re ill – that’s truly sucky. I hope you recover your joie de vivre soon.

Me, me, meeeeeee! I have zombie fingers (not that I’d every heard about zombie fingers), and have struggled (intermittently) for years & years. Thank you for that link as it does explain much. I’ve been very bad about applying hand cream and do have a bit of a callous on my index finger although I have not played any musical instrument since my school days.

Thank you also for that film recommendation. It sounds like the sort of light, fluffy, humorous festive fare I like. Now I just have to persuade Himself to watch “girly stuff”. He’s a good man, so I’m sure he will give in. He eventually gave in to the newest version of Little Women, only for me to complain throughout it 😀

    • Deb, thanks for your concern. I’m not SICK, just sick.. Feeling lowly as they used to say.

When I found out about the concept of zombie fingers a lightbulb went off in my head. I was SO THAT’S WHAT’S GOING ON with me and touchscreens. I have more problems with those darned things. It may seem like I’m addled brained when I’m in front of them, but I understand what I’m doing– the computer doesn’t.

Z-D watched the movie with me and he didn’t hate it, smiled at the ending. I’ll warn you that there are sex scenes, both heterosexual and homosexual, so Himself might, or might not, like that.

      • Thanks for the warning, I’ll apply a trigger warning just in case, although our favourite vlog is an adorable gay couple who are building an off grid home in the Canadian woods, so the de-sensitising is going well 😀

        Liked by 1 person

        • Ha! Kudos to you. I like how you’re tackling the subject matter, one innocent step forward at a time. The vlog sounds fascinating, not because of gayness, but because of building.

  2. Morning, Ally Bean….so sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. Sending healing hugs and good stuff of all sorts your way. Any post from you with the name “Laverne DeFazio” in it? You can stop there. Thanks for the links…I’ve been meaning to dive into a true crime podcast…thanks for the recommendation! 😉

  3. Settle deep under your covers and succumb to the sleepy vibes…I hope you feel better soon!
And I checked out that link for the pepsi/milk thing and it bothers me no end when reference is not given to others who ‘discovered’ something before it got RE-discovered. Ya know? Yep, LaVerne D. made my stomach crawl with her ‘comfort drink’ concoction back in the day – but she did it long before Lindsay L.

  4. Fluids, a blanket and Tylenol. Hope you are feeling better very soon Ally Bean. I had completely forgotten about Laverne when I first saw the LL Pepsi ad. I bet there are only specific members of society (boomers and beyond) who remember LL is not the first with Pepsi and milk. I watched that wedding movie last week. It was entertaining and I always enjoy Kristen Bell and Allison Janney.

    • Deb, I am about as hydrated as a woman can be, hot tea being my current favorite beverage. I’m sure you’re right that only a certain age group remembers Laverne’s favorite drink was what is now called pilk. It seems sad that she’s not even mentioned, although she wasn’t naughty with it.

I liked the movie because I like KB & AJ. It was a little uneven, but held my/our attention. Plus the sets… oh my… so amazing.

  5. The pork link remedy for zombie fingers made me laugh. Imagine carrying that around all day (well, until a pet ate it, which would be 5 minutes in our house).

I hope you feel better soon–got your hot tea, lemon juice, and honey? That’s my remedy for a sore throat. Many (pork link!) hugs from far away.

    • AutumnAshbough, I cannot imagine doing most of the suggestions I’ve read in this article, and others, for combating zombie fingers. Like I’m going to lick my fingers before I use the u-scan at the grocery? I DON’T THINK SO.

I like your suggestion. I’ve been grooving on peppermint tea, but I need to up my “sore throat be gone” game.

  6. Also LMAO over the sad beige parenting article: “And this stuff is expensive, you say? It costs a lot to dress your child like a 19th-century workhouse orphan.” I can be smug, my kid’s room is yellow AF, with a rug that has bright colored birds all over it. He loves it and never wants to change the color, even though my friends warned me he’d hate it and was to paint it black when he was older.

    Liked by 1 person

    • AutumnAshbough, I was howling when I read that article. I immediately started reading excerpts from it to Z-D. Yellow is a wonderful color for a kid’s room. I cannot imagine surrounding a child with shades of beige, seems uninspired.

  7. I’m sorry to hear you are under the weather. But clearly you are putting your down time to good use. I haven’t thought of Lindsay Lohan in forever – that’s funny to see her “pop” up again!

Hope you feel better soon, Ally!

  8. Sorry you’re not feeling well. I followed some of the links, then I got lost and had to go back to my email to get back here. Maybe it was when my mind went back in time at the thought of Pilk – Yeah, that’s been done.

    • Dan, I didn’t want Pepsi and milk when Laverne drank it, I don’t want it when Lindsay drinks it. I don’t how care how cleverly it’s named, it’s a big old YUCK to me. Thanks for finding your way back here. That’s kind of a thing about sharing links, readers take off and don’t come back. It used to bother me, but now… I shrug.

  9. Ally,

There are days, and then once in a while, every so often, possibly even once in a blue moon, there are THOSE Days. As the wife and I are fond of saying, stuff happens. You will be in my thoughts today. Feel better my friend.

We don’t watch much TV and the little that we do watch is recorded. I have a deep dislike of commercials and by watching recorded television, I can fast forward through the bane of television shows. That said, I had never heard of Pilk. Thanks for bringing back fond memories of Laverne, she was a fun character and right up there with Edith.

    • Johnny, yep, this sore throat is just something that happened. I’m not really SICK, but not feeling spritely either. I’ll just drink all the tea, whine a little, then nap.

Laverne and Shirley was a wonderful show. The chemistry between the two characters was a delight. HOWEVER I don’t want to drink Pepsi and milk, ever. Didn’t then, won’t now, even if Lindsay is pushing the stuff. 🥴

  10. Not feeling well and still got out a blog post? Above and beyond, my friend. Hope you are feeling better soon. Although, if one has to get sick, I kind of think this is the time of year to do it. What better time to spend the day under covers, drinking hot beverages? And have a good excuse to eschew socializing?

I loved the sad beige parenting piece. I’d seen the instagram account, but this article was funny. Maybe funnier. Thank you for the laugh. But using pork to make a touchscreen work? Eww. There was a world before touchscreens, and maybe we need to revive more of it. I kinda miss the 90s more and more–which may be why I also liked that movie. It did feel like a bit of time travel.

Thank you for the diversions this morning. Now it’s back to work for me. (Sigh. I’m still working on getting this retirement thing right.)

    • Rita, I don’t feel great but I’m not feeling terrible either. I’m not going anywhere today and it is Tuesday, my day to post here, so why not blog? At least until I take my first nap of the day.

I’ve not looked at the beige parent IG account, only read the article. It is a hoot and half, like they used to say. I feel frustration about the touchscreens, but I imagine they’ll get better– in the sense that I won’t be encouraged to use a sausage with one.

I liked the movie. Maybe not the best movie ever, but a distraction worth mentioning here. It appealed to my love of the 90s, before screens took over our lives. Good luck with your work today.

  11. Just the idea of Pilk is gross. But I also think Pepsi and milk are gross separately.

I forwarded Death of an Artist on to V because they absolutely love a true crime podcast.

I never even thought about the magic behind the touch screen!! Perhaps because I do not have zombie fingers (which considering the embroidery and knitting callouses surprises me a bit).

I’m absolutely taking the Sad Beige Parenting for a Friday Finds.

And I’m watching that movie today because I was just looking for something to watch during my knitting time!!

I love this compilations of links but hope you are feeling better soon! It’s no fun to be under the weather!

    • Katie, I cannot get behind the idea of milk with a cola. I know it’s just a weird trend, but YUCK, I say judgmentally.

Death of an Artist was worth listening to if only to get insight into how art curators curate their collections and how they describe the artists in their collections. That is, how much truth about personal lives do they share with the public?

Sad Beige Parents is the best. The movie, while not great, isn’t bad either. Perfect for kind of watching, kind of doing something else.

I’m sure I’ll get to feeling better soon enough, but today [and maybe tomorrow] I’m going to lay low, drink tea, grumble.

Hope you feel better soon. That crud is going around here too.

  13. I had not seen this commercial. I love the LaVerne and Shirly show. I’m not even tempted to taste that combo drink. Ick.

I hope you feel better. I’m feel fine, health wise, but I’m having an overwhelmed day. I was out of town over the weekend and coming back to face all the partially done tasks has my head spinning. One tot I babysit asked me where all my Christmas decorations. It was all I could do not to give her a timeout. LEAVE ME ALONE, DANG IT. I’VE GOT STUFF GOING ON . . . is what I wanted to say. Instead I told the kids to clean up the family room and go play in the basement.

  14. I saw a headline somewhere about Lindsay Lohan and Pilk, and had zero familiarity of anyone ever mixing Milk and Pepsi. I mentioned it to my wife and she said…”oh yeah, that was on Laverne & Shirley.” I find it truly bizarre but then again, some people will try anything just to feel like they are one of the cool kids. I do have issues with touch screens now and again, but always place the blame on the screens. It can’t possibly be me. The People We Hate At The Wedding does look like a fun watch. Hope you feel better soon, Ally.

    • Bruce, the minute I caught onto what Lindsay was selling, I was aggravated. Not because I’m going to be forced to drink the stuff, but because there was no mention of Laverne. I mean, really, give credit where it is due.

I don’t always have trouble with touch screens, but often enough that I turned to The Google to find out if I was alone. I am not.

The movie was light, kind of pointless, but with good actors and lovely scenes in London.

    • Joni, I don’t have any real symptoms of Covid, no chest congestion, no fever, no lack of taste. I think this is just a boring old sore throat infection. The goat cheese salad we first had a restaurant. I got curious about making it at home and it was as tasty as what we had when eating out.

That article should have mentioned Laverne and Shirley. The article’s author was most likely not alive when the show aired.

  16. I’m sorry you’re under the weather. I’ve got a cold, too. I’m blaming the sudden cold, damp weather.

I have zombie fingers! Especially on the Fire, I can tap tap tap until I want to throw the damn thing across the room. On the other hand, sometimes just hovering over a button triggers something I didn’t even intend to trigger. Plus, Chrome has done something, I think. Photos and links are opening by themselves. I need to find how to fix that. Technology. Fun.

I am not trying pilk. Nope. I saw somewhere that there is a trend to put coke in your coffee. No, not trying that either.

    • Zazzy, you may have just explained what happened to me, too. Last week I was BUSY and so tired by Friday, the the weather went sideways. And now, I’m just a grumbly puss.

I have zombie finger problems on, of all things, our new cooktop and oven. I’m punching, poking, jabbing, tapping on buttons that seem to arbitrarily work for me. Z-D just taps and the things work fine. Annoying

Coke in coffee? No thanks. I have had a Spanish cocktail called kalimotxo that is red wine & Coke served on the rocks. It wasn’t bad, but once was enough.

  17. I hope you feel better soon, Ally. I had some sort of crud recently; it wasn’t covid, just the regular flu, but my, it was nasty. Time for lots of rest, warm beverages and silly movies.
If Lindsay Lohan thinks it’s great then it must be as she’s such an arbiter of taste. 😉 I used to drink floats when I was a kid, and that’s really not much different from just putting plain milk in the pop, but somehow it’s much less appealing.

    • Lynette, I don’t think I have Covid, I think I’ve been running around too much and the swings in temperature + humidity have caught up with me. I just want to sleep, so I shall.

You’re right about the ice cream floats. I liked them when I was a child, but now the idea of milk with cola is too much for me. It’s similar but not the same.

  18. Whoa….that’s what Lindsay Lohan looks like now? We called those drinks a Brown Cow when I was a kid. They weren’t too bad, as I recall! I read the book, The People We Hate At the Wedding.I recommend all of Grant Ginder’s books. I love the origin link, probably because I love all those foods, even the hated fruitcake. I’ll check out those Christmas foods (for info – I’m not likely to try much of anything new). We are probably the world’s last holdouts on Amazon Prime, so sadly won’t be seeing the movie. I liked the movie, but it’s not a classic– just a nice diversion. The goat cheese salad is every bit as good as the one served in a local cafe, which is where I first had it then thought… I can make this.

  30. Hope you’re feeling better since you published this post Ally. I really liked the Christmas food history. Years ago The Food Network had a feature called “Unwrapped” which I enjoyed watching and that show delved into the history of foods and brands. One Thanksgiving, they featured how everything on your Thanksgiving table was produced, from cranberry bogs and gathering cranberries to showing the conveyor belt of Durkee Fried Onions.

My father had a old bachelor friend at work and he had a standing dinner invitation at our house every Tuesday for years. He would always bring a desert or box of chocolates, though my mom would say it wasn’t necessary. For some reason, he thought since we were Canadian, he should find and bring plum pudding a/k/a “figgy pudding” – let’s say it is an acquired taste IMHO anyway.

I’ve never tried milk and Pepsi, but watched “Laverne & Shirley” back in the day and know all about Laverne’s favorite drink – she talked about it all the time. I’m not repelled by the thought of that mixture, but calling it “pilk” doesn’t sound appealing to me in the least.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Linda, I remember watching Unwrapped a few times. It was fascinating and sometime disturbing to learn about our foods.

I’ve never had figgy pudding. While there is a wonderful Christmas carol about it, I don’t need to taste it. I’ll eat mincemeat, but figgy pudding looks awful, more like fruitcake which I do not like.

When I saw that LL commercial for ‘pilk’ I immediately thought of Laverne. At the very least Pepsi could have had the letter “L” on LL’s costume as an homage to Laverne. BUT NO, they ignored the connection. Regardless I’m going to drink the stuff no matter how it’s advertised.

      Liked by 1 person

      • Yes, mass production of the foods we like can be unnerving to see. All those Durkee fried onions on the conveyor belt. I could eat them right out of the canister with no problem.

My mom liked fruitcake so we’d get one tiny package shaped like a bar for her alone. I didn’t fight her for it. I don’t like figgy pudding – too congealed for me. My mom made mincemeat tarts for years, halving the mincemeat mixture in two bottles in July and filling the bottle with rum. They were potent!

Yes, LL’s acting like this is something new. We had “dirty drinks” back in the 70s when I worked at the diner. People drank root beer and orange soda at A&W and called it “swamp juice” which I’d never heard of, so customers came in and asked for Coke and Orange Crush mixed together. It looked disgusting.

  31. I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling puny. (I had a coworker who described being sick that way, and it stuck with me.)

I remember trying milk and Pepsi after seeing Laverne drink it. Kind of like a Pepsi float, but not as good. Wouldn’t recommend.

I liked the link to the Christmas food and the goat cheese salad looks amazing. There used to be a restaurant around here that served something similar, and my daughter would always order it. The waitress was obsessed with my daughter, which creeped her out. I suspect she just liked seeing us come in every couple of weeks, and it was a very small, independent restaurant, so she was probably trying to make her feel welcome. But she hated it. She was maybe 8 at the time, so a long time ago now that I think of it. Anyway, the salad looks great and I might make it for her soon…

Liked the history of different holiday foods. Perhaps I’ll give the movie a try, though my family are not rom com fans. I can watch it alone though.

    Liked by 1 person

    • J., I had a boss who used to say that too, about being puny. I hadn’t thought of her in years.

No ‘pilk’ for me, but the goat cheese salad was easy and delicious. I first ate this salad in a swanky cafe, probably 15 years ago. You have your memory of it, mine is of the couple who took us there. They’re long divorced now, but it was a lovely night.

The movie isn’t great, but it isn’t lousy. It was good to watch while we were making dinner and then eating it. The parts in London, England, are wonderful, even if the plot drags a bit.
