Parsing A Trending Word, Thinking About My Dad

IF I OFFEND YOU, my gentle readers, by mentioning this charmingly old-fashioned word, please forgive me.  But you see, “pissant” was one of my father’s favorite words.

Dad’s been a long time gone from my life, so I’d forgotten about his use of this word.  However when I saw  “pissant” listed as Trending Now on the Merriam-Webster website, I immediately remembered Dad using the word.

OF COURSE WHEN DADDY, a physician, used the word “pissant” it didn’t stand alone.  Oh, no, no, no.  He’d further explain that the “pissant” in question was EITHER “in need of a high colonic” OR “in need of a frontal lobotomy.”

The first phrase, with the enema reference, was for those people who didn’t tell the truth– full of sh!t, ‘ya know?

The second phrase, the brain surgery reference, was for those people who were speaking illogically, making no sense– perhaps crazy.

DAD HAD A WAY WITH WORDS, I’ll give him that.  And because he was never one to not opine about events, people, &/or ideas–  many of his words have stuck with me in one way or another.

Don’t quite know what more to tell you here, my gentle readers.  Just a passing thought, from a blogging wordsmith who came by her love of words + writing early in life.

Listening to her elders [one in particular] go on & on about things. 🙄

QUESTIONS OF THE DAY

Do you ever hear a word and immediately think of someone who uses, or used, that word because the person and the word are inextricably linked together in your mind?

If so, what’s the word and who’s the person? If not, what prompts you to recall someone? Photos? Music? Food? Scent?

FEELING:  organized.  centered.  jovial.  ready to have a productive and fun weekend.  nice weather predicted.  a neglected garden to weed.  a new vegetarian recipe to try.

HEARING:  with the windows open, traffic from the interstate.  going fast.  no sirens.  just a nice lull in the background.

TASTING:  water.  cold.  fresh.  keeping me hydrated as I seat here typing.  adding vitality to my life.

SEEING:  trees with red leaves on a few of the branches.  green grass tinged with a bit of gold.  blue skies with white clouds.  a relaxing natural color palette indicative of change.

SMELLING:  a new parfum called fresh life.  its scent has lingered in the air after I applied a dab of it from a sample card onto my wrist.  light floral.  citrus-ish.  clean.

The Return Of Five Senses Friday

FEELING:  relaxed and happy.  well-rested.  ready to throw myself into new projects, dreamed up during my quiet days at home during our snow emergencies.

HEARING:  energy.  the fan of the furnace as it keeps this house a cozy temp.  the clickety-clack that my keypad makes when I type anything.

TASTING:  coffee.  bold, yet not harsh.  the way most of my days begin.

SEEING:  prettiness.  sunshine streaming through the open wooden blinds in the living room, illuminating the artwork that hangs on the wall above the loveseat.

SMELLING:  lime zest & cyprus.  freshness.  all because I washed my hands with my favorite kitchen soap before I sat down in our home office [across the foyer from the living room] to write this post.

Feeling:

exhausted.  i’ve really been putting my all into my blog lately.  writing.  commenting on other blogs.  updating my template/pages.  it takes focus & commitment to keep a blog going– and there are weeks when i wonder if it’s worth it.

Hearing:

the hum of my old computer, which i still use on occasion, that sits next to my current quiet computer.

Tasting:

dark chocolate “balanced with crunchy hazelnuts and dried currants.”

Seeing:

outside: a gray day.  inside: a gray wall behind the computer that needs some decoration.

Smelling:

sandalwood spice, a “blend of orange blossoms, sandalwood, and kashmir vanilla,” from the candle in the next room over.

Feeling:

rather calm considering that:

there are half-finished drapes hanging on the kitchen windows… the house is three-fourths decorated for Christmas… I haven’t begun to figure out what to serve at a party we’re having in two weeks… the handyman guy for the leaky bathroom window is dragging his feet while tightly clutching our money and not doing the repairs… we have a huge muddy mess in our basement where there is a crack in the chimney foundation or a leak in the chimney cap [or both I suppose]… and we have now hired some company to fix our foundation/chimney/cap mess before winter sets in.

Hearing:

the sound of the [new] furnace blower as it keeps our house warm

Tasting:

freshly brewed black coffee

Seeing:

strewn in front of my computer on my desk:

clipboards – white paper printed with info – small yellow legal paper scribbled with ideas – one blue pen – one book – many pink & blue 3×5″ index cards – dust

Smelling:

not much of anything because allergies have my nose stuffed up

Hearing:

orchestral version of “Somewhere” (West Side Story) on classical radio station [not quite sure what’s up with that]

Tasting:

freshly brewed black coffee

Seeing:

bright pink petunias growing every which way in the planting bed next to the front sidewalk

Smelling:

the slightly herbal, kind of citrus-y scent from my bath soap
