So This Is Where I Belong…

I took the What Generation Do You Belong In Quiz.

• • •

You Belong In Generation X

You fit in best with people born between 1961 and 1981.

You are fun, laid back, and very independent.

You are willing to take risks and live your life however you see fit.

You are casual, accepting, and friendly. You see everyone as your equal.

• • •

Yep.  That’s me.

I’ve never fit in with the Boomers.

They baffle and frustrate me.

But Generation X makes sense to me.

We are who we think we are, eh?

The “Reader Appreciation Award” Meme

:: The Introduction ::

Gemma at helloitsgemma tagged me with this award.  Isn’t that kind of her?  The deal is that I answer the following questions.  Then I tag some other bloggers who I appreciate for leaving comments on my blog.  They then answer the questions on their blogs & tag some more bloggers.  And the award goes on ad infinitum…

:: The Questions ::

Where do you do most of your writing/blogging?
In our home study using my desktop computer, Coraline.

What books were your childhood favourites?
From my mother: The Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh + Charlotte’s Web + the Little House on the Prairie series.  From my father: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer + Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Who is your favourite fictional character?
Tricky question.  I’m going to stick with childhood books and say Cassandra Mortmain, the narrator in I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith.  Cassandra, a teenage girl, starts the novel as a detached observer who records events + her impressions of people in her journal.  But eventually Cassandra becomes a participant in her own life and learns a few adult truths.  She is, I believe, one of the most charming narrators ever.

What is your favourite time of day and why?
Morning, when it is quiet, is my favorite time of day because my mind isn’t overtaxed with the daily minutiae yet.

Have you ever Googled yourself and been surprised at what you’ve found?
Yes, I’ve Googled myself.  No, I wasn’t surprised.  This blog is all there is about me out there on the interwebs.

Who would play me in a movie of my life?
Let’s ask Christina Applegate first, shall we?  I think she’d be a good choice.

One material possession I could not live without?
Our electric Cuisinart coffee maker with a timer.

Have you ever been naked in public?
Does skinny dipping, while in college, with friends, in a friend’s grandma’s pool count?  If so, yes.  If not, no.

What is your dream car?
Any car that I own.  Right now it’s a 9-year-old Honda Accord coupe, Olivia.

What/who/where was your first proper kiss?
I’m going to interpret proper kiss to mean the first one with the man who I married.  So the answer would be: long smooch/Zen-Den/college dorm room.

:: The Next Step ::

Here is a list of some wonderful bloggers who frequently comment on The Spectacled Bean.  I’m choosing these bloggers for this meme because, like me, they are doing NaBloPoMo– and I figure that they might be looking for something to write about.

What Do You Value Right Now?

~ • ~

I.  While researching the concept of “values” I found this Checklist for Personal Values.  The checklist intrigued me so I did what the author suggested and picked the 10 values that mean the most to me [in alpha order].  Then I chose which 5 values were most important to me [in bold].

  1. change & variety
  2. economic security
  3. effectiveness
  4. freedom
  5. friendships
  6. good health
  7. inner harmony
  8. nature
  9. respect
  10. wisdom

II.  I then ranked these 5 values in order of importance to me until I had the following list.

  1. good health
  2. inner harmony
  3. economic security
  4. change & variety
  5. respect

III.  Then I sat here and thought about what I’d learned about who I am today.  I realized that:

  • I no longer care as much about being right as I once did.  Whatever, people.
  • I no longer care at all about status.  If I ever did.
  • I no longer believe in as many abstract principles as I did when I was younger.  What is, is.

IV.  I did this simple little exercise in self-awareness just to see what would evolve from it.  I don’t know that these results surprise me as much as they confirm what I already suspected about my middle-aged self.  Which is that I’m pragmatic, well-balanced & curious as ever.

If you enjoy learning a little bit about what makes you tick and you have the time [5 minutes max], give this exercise a go.  It was rather fun, I thought.

Naturally Quiet

For me, quiet is the essence.  It is the place from which I make all my best decisions.

It is the reason that I like to sit with a mug of coffee in the morning– or a glass of wine before dinner.  Quietly.  Reflecting on what is to come– or what has happened.

I need quiet to know who I am.

I grew up an only child in a home with older, bookish parents.  We had a TV but it was only on for news & specific shows.  We had a radio for more news & music.  We had a record player, but it was only on for the length of the record.

And then there was silence.  Quiet.  The place to go and think and grow and create.

I’ve come to realize that most people I know like noise & distractions & movement.  Endless movement.  I am the odd one.

But for me the ability to move, to know what to do next, to continue on– come from the quiet moments that give me the confidence to keep going.
