More Snow, More Gray, More Mellow

SATURDAY THE SKIES WERE bright blue and it was sunny outside, but very cold.  We spent the whole day driving every which way around the region, doing errands.

Not being at home, basically.

Then Sunday arrived, even colder than Saturday.  We decided to stay inside, doing pretty much nothing worth talking about.

LATE IN THE AFTERNOON it started to snow again, so I grabbed my camera and took some photos of winter scenes in the waning afternoon light.

As shown here, the midwestern winter colors are a natural earthy palette all their own.  Very subdued, tending towards gray.  Either you like them [I do], or you don’t.

To me, these shades of gray, which I only see for a few weeks during the year, are a reminder to relax and mellow out.

  1. I absolutely love your pictures of the snow and grayness. I especially like the photo of your chairs on the sun porch. The punch of blue cushions and the floral pillow seem so bright against the background.

    • Beth, thanks. I thought the contrast btwn the gray snowiness behind those colorful chairs, covered in a dusting of snow, was pretty, too. I appreciate this color palette for a few weeks– then I’m done with, ready for Spring!

  2. I think the shades of gray are pretty – in a photograph. I particularly like the snow through the window in that third shot. But forgive me that my first response was thank goodness it wasn’t here. Today is my last appointment until the end of April. After today, it can snow all over me and I won’t complain. I’ll even take snow pictures. But it’s supposed to be 58° today and I couldn’t be happier.

    • Zazamataz, you make a good point. Gray thru a camera lens is entirely different than gray on the road during a long drive. I just like the colors, I guess. We’re supposed to be in the 60s by the weekend, which I’m sure will be delightful.

  3. Even looking at the pictures helped calm some brewing agitation. Thank you.

(I wish I could fly to Oregon for a weekend. All this warmth and dryness does not belong in February.)

  4. I have a lot of gray in my house and find it a very serene, tranquil color. That said, when the skies are constantly gray, I get a bit down. However, the mix of snow and gray is lovely and peaceful. Your neighborhood looks beautiful!

    • Margaret, we’re beginning to add more gray to the inside of our house, for the reason you mentioned. I can become depressed with gray skies, but sometimes in the right light the winter colors appeal to me.

  5. I’m redoing my home office in that neutral, natural palette. BUT I AM OVER THIS SNOW AND CLOUDY WEATHER!

    OVER. IT.

Today’s extra blast seemed like a decidedly nasty extra slap in the face. My SAD is in overdrive this month. Ready to lose it. Aaarrgghh.

    • nance, I know what you mean about being over this weather. It’s slushy and slippery here today, which is bothersome. Inside the house all these neutral grays rock my world, but outside I only like them when I can safely get from point A to point B.

  6. I love the first and last picture – of course we don’t get that sort of weather – and can’t afford to go skiing anymore.
The chair picture could be a novel’s cover. Pillow is just the right accent for the outdoor chilly scene

    • philmouse, I’m glad you mentioned the pillow. I fussed over what pattern to get to put out there for the winter. Those sorts of small decorating decisions can do me in sometimes. As can the cold, but the beauty of the winter palette makes it all more tolerable.

    • Britt, I think that people often ignore the inherent beauty in a winter palette because they hate the cold so much. Not saying that I adore snow + frigid temps, but on Sunday it looked lovely to me. Also, I liked that pillow, too– but for some reason had the worst time deciding to buy it. Go figure.
